Changes coming to Pro Plan (for those who use it)

I just got an email from Purina that the Lamb, Beef and Chicken regular formulas are becoming Pro Plan shredded.

I am rather unhappy to see formula changes after years and years of the consistancy that many dogs must have.  I know that many here could care less, but to those you do use it be aware of this change in Oct.  I can't get the ingredients yet but did see the notice of the change.  I use the Salmon Sensitive formula which is staying the same thank goodness.  Not ready for trial and error and vomit time again.  But our last dog ate the regular pro plan for ten years and I couldn't switch him.  I wrote them and said that these sorts of things aren't cool.  They are the same formula but now with some soft shredded bits added.  I am pretty sure that the Selects line is doing so well that the old Pro Plan is getting this updated deal.  At least they are giving out warning ahead of time.

Thanks for the heads up, Kord is also on the PPP Salmon. I am currently trying TOTW salmon to see how he does for a "last min can't get to the only store in town that sells it" alternative.

His ears were a little red but not to bad and his itching has not increased so hopefull we are good.

On another dog forum I was reading that the Selects line will only be available in certain stores.  The poster said she was in a Petsmart or Petco and they were removing the bags of the Selects.

They are NOT changing their whole line.  They are just adding a new formula Wink

According to the website, the beef and rice, lamb and rice and chicken and rice will BECOME the new shredded formula.  I took that to mean they are replacing those with this--not keeping them and adding this.  I don't use the food but just saying.

So..it's going to be shredded and hard kibble? Will the shredded bits make it spoil faster? I rotate lex between the Lamb/ and Beef/rice. I finally got him to have solid poops consistently when I switched to pro plan.He gets the runs so easily. This kinda sucks =(

... Or some other type of sugary substance Angry Wasn't that just special of them? At least, they warned the PP people beforehand, that the formula is being cheapened.

I still have my adults on Dog Chow but there have been definite changes to it. Few weeks ago, they changed the bag sizes from 37.5lbs to 34lbs, and the kibbles were noticably darker. Also, artificial colors were bumped up on the list. I was not happy with that, at all. It was always just a plain, low protein formula but never had any colors, etc. The Puppy Chow was always an awesome feed, it's completely worthless now. The adult food is still working for my pack but I'm just not happy about the formula change. The dogs are still looking good, but I don't like the company is denying formula change when I KNOW the feed was tweaked. Don't know what they did to the Puppy Chow but I had two nursing bitches get limber tail on it practically overnight after the bag changes. So not a happy camper here. I would hate to stop feeding it, as the dogs look so good on it but I was planning to go w/ PP over the winter now that is crossed off my list. Ugh.

Re: Changes coming to Pro Plan (for those who use it)

Here's the web addy for info on the new version: http://www.proplan.com/shredded_blend.html Sounds like they will keep 3 individual varieties, but each will have ner "tender shredded pieces" added.  There's also wording to the effect that you get the "same great nutrition" from the new version as the old one.

Veeeery interesting.  Hopefully they don't start messing with the Selects line as that's the only Purina food I will feed - it's decent ingredient wise and the price is good.

ACK! Sounds like they're making it into a Beneful type diet with the same vitamin premix! Oh no, I am not happy ... And I see they didn't even have the courtesy to post an ingredient panel of this supposed wonderful new food. Why, why, why must they always mess with a good food? Oh yeah - $$$ Sad

Re: Changes coming to Pro Plan (for those who use it)

I talked to a friend that has fed the PP Sensitive for many years with great luck. She said it is a topic of great discussion on some the the breed lists and show lists. She says it is her understanding this new stuff is in addition to what is already available from PP, and is marketed to the "pet person", not the show dog people. She seems to think all the other formulas will remain.

Has anyone actually called PP and asked?

OK - I had a few minutes and called them. They have a bank of service type folks that answer the phones.   The guy -Tim -  that helped me said these new shredded foods will take the place of the Chicken, Lamb and Beef .  He gave a  quick run down on the indgredients -- lots of soy, some glycerin, and some minerals. He said the Sensitive will not change (for now). So it sounded to me like they are replacing these 3 old formulas with this new shredded stuff? Or maybe he didn't really know?

If so --- They must have lost their tiny minds.

Re: Changes coming to Pro Plan (for those who use it)

The current ingredients in Pro Plan are almost identical to the ingredients in One, the only difference I could see is that wheat is further down on the list in Purina One, and One is significantly cheaper than PP. I hope they don't change the One...it is the only thing my dogs haven't had some sort if issue on with still being in my budget. You guys feeding the PP might want to look into the One.

Yeah. I think someone over at Purina had a brain fart and carped their brains right into the toilet.

Are they insane??? That has always been a feed marketed to show & performance breeders, and they've done good by supporting hunters and field trials. Now they are willing to throw that away for pet people who are probably the same crowd feeding Beneful? There are many, many large show breeders in my breed feeding Pro Plan, and if those dogs go to pot on that new formula they are going to be seriously up to their necks in poo. I'm going to have to call the company. After all the years that we were loyal to Purina they turned around and stabbed us in the back. Soy and glycerin. Lovely. Wonder if they're still going to charge $45 a bag for it Super Angry
