Pottying where I don't want it.

Last winter the dogs took up peeing and pooping on the deck.  Not all the dogs, but Max and Benny.  And then Buster feels the need to mark over where they went, but he won't poop on the deck.

So my solution was to go outside with them EVERY time they go out and stay there until everyone is ready to go back in.  I just have a small portion of the yard fenced in that comes off the deck and it is very secure and they don't like to be outside alone anyway.  They do their business and come back in.

My question is, will I have to go out with them forever?  I mean, Buster goes out a lot now that he's older and Benny goes out a lot because he has a small bladder.  I have been doing this for months and every once in a while I still catch one of them sniffing around on the deck and I call them to me because I don't want them to slip up and go on the deck.

    So will they ever learn?

My husbands last dog used to do that on occasion.  He started standing at the door and making sure she went all the way down into the yard and if she didn't they said something like, "All the way down, Zip" or something like that.  They always had to keep an eye on her because sometimes even if she went in the yard at first she's wander back to the deck when they weren't looking again.

That sounds just like mine.  If they stop on the lower deck, I say "go" and they will continue.   Too bad I can't stand at the door.  I have to go out and to the right to see into the yard.  I don't mind it now, I actually enjoy going out with them now, but I am thinking about when winter comes and I know I'm not going to want to go out.  I'll have to get all bundled up about a thousand times a day...lol

If the space going down the stairs from the deck to the yard isn't huge you could just keep a baby gate out there and put it across after they get down.
