Piper and Ruby (formerly known as Coffe) Update

I got this email today from their owner:

I am so sorry for not getting to you.  We got it but were late getting going so I dashed to the vet.  Piper is 17lbs. 3 1/2 oz.  and Ruby(that's what we're calling Coffe) is 13lbs 4 oz.  They got their shots but we'll do the neutering in a couple months as they prefer to wait until 6 months.  Piper had a little rash that we got some antibiotics for.

They are learning sit and Ruby can fetch.  I have them poohing in a specific part in the corner of the backyard and they are very good.  They love to chase each other, go to bed about 9:30 and wake up at 6AMish.

They are both sweeties although Ruby will steal Piper's rawhide toys and then give Piper hell if Piper tries to get it back.  Little stinker!!

    Cynthia

    Can't wait for the pictures!

How sweet!  I know that makes you feel good knowing how they are coming along.   I still write to Rocky''s foster mommy and when we take pics she gets the biggest kick out of seeing them.   I dont think many do that and she has placed a bunch of babies.

I am glad they are doing fine and together. Hopefully photos will follow soon after.

I am glad that you found Piper and Ruby a good, loving home!

Please be sure that the new owner knows that she needs to spend time with each pup without the other.  That will make sure that the pups don't freak out if they have to be separated for a while.  They can be spayed together, but one may need other vet care when the other doesn't.

Separate classes or play groups would be great for teaching the pups some independence from each other.

I hope the new owner also plans to do some crate training.  That does not mean confining the pups for long periods!  It just means getting them familiar with crates so they don't freak out when they are spayed or when confined to heal from an injury.

The last thing one needs is for a sick (or post surgery) dog to be panicking because she is confined to a crate and/or separated from her littermate!!!  Dogs can break teeth or nails during this panic - or worse tear out stitches.

Thanks for the info. luckyly the girls were already crate trained at my place. She is going to wait until the girls are 6 months old and get them spayed. Hopefully she will send pictures before than. I did tell her about the separation anxiety.

I think they also need to be socialised a fair bit seperately as well as together.  It's a whole different world when you're experiencing it on your own, without your sister at your back.  Wink

"I used to look at [my dog] Smokey and think, 'If you were a little smarter you could tell me what you were thinking,' and he'd look at me like he was saying, 'If you were a little smarter, I wouldn't have to.'" - Fred Jungclaus
