I'm in LOVE with the giant schnauzer,

Me too! His shiny black fur is awesome and his owner was tolerable as well.

I felt sorry for the older man who had to sleep in that tiny house, poor guy.

I'm excited to see how it progresses but DH got pissy that their were no Pit Bulls, Dobies or Rotties. I had to explain to him that they just arnt meant for that kind of trials, they arnt really working dogs of that sort, LOL. He is biased!

DH kept complaining about the same thing.  He kept looking over at me saying "Bevo can do that."

I, otoh, was thrilled that there were no Dobies, Pitties, or Rotties cast.  Sadly, I would bet that there will be an influx in spontaneous purchases of the breeds showcased.  I know that my breed isn't for the faint or heart, nor are they for those who aren't fully prepared to handle a high energy dog.  I'd prefer rescue not have to deal with an influx of dogs because somebody didn't think & research before they bought...

I am enjoying it.  I am partial to the older gentleman from Texas and his dog, Star.  The boxer is pretty cool as well as the dog named Galaxy.  I love the way the bulldog is so easy going until it's time to skateboard.  The little Maltese, I think, can do a lot and the giant schnauzer is so beautiful.  Actually I like all the dogs, but not all their owners.

Star, yes I had forgotten her name! Is she a Brittany Spaniel? I hope so because I had been telling DH for sometime that I like those dogs and the word "spaniel" made him think of a foo foo dog but he really was impressed with sweet Star. I am so eager to know if she is gonna be ok next week, did ya see she had to be rushed to the vet.....I hate previews that leave you hanging.

I must admit I am not one to indulge in TV but since its about dogs I'm allowing myself the luxury!

I was also impressed with the judges, they really offered a realistic opinion to all the dog owners and I hope some less educated dog owners take note!

I was pretty disappointed with the first episode... I didn't expect perfection but I couldn't believe that there was treat-in-front-of-your-nose-luring.... I am hoping that the training and handling improves as the show progresses and everyone settles...

Star is a Brittany.  At one point, they were known as Brittany Spaniels, but the Brittany people changed the name to reflect the fact that the breed is more an all-around hunting dog (pointing, flushing and retrieving) than simply a spaniel, which are primarily flushing dogs.

Although Cockers are generally thought of as foo-foo dogs, most other spaniels are still primarily used as hunting dogs.  The Cavalier is a toy breed bred down from larger spaniels, likely with some smoosh-faced oriental breed added-in at some point.

It was a fun show last night. I think the judges made the right call. That lady was sooo annoying with her constant verbal corrections and I agree she was too harsh with her dog. She made some reference to this being good experience for her business. I hope it's not dog training! LOL The dog that impressed me the most was the boxer. He did really well I thought. Personally I hate the 'baby talk'. He seems like a really nice guy but a little whimpy if you ask me. What did you think about the girl who put a dress on her dog? I've never really liked seeing dogs dressed up but to be honest I thought it was appropriate for that challenge and I think the judges were a little hard on her. She really should have just listened to their comments without making excuses IMO. It just shows you how sensitive people are when it comes to their relationship with their dog. And then there is Elvis. It is so obvious that the problem is 200% with the owner. If your dog runs off and you praise it and love it up - well of course the dog is going to continue! I was nice to see the other owners giving him advice. Unfortunately he doesn't get it.

i agree. jacks can be such a stubbord breed, and give them an inch and they'll run for miles! i wanna see them do good, but i have to be honest and say that they're kinda slacking :S and i wouldn't be surprised to see them leave in the next few episodes.

i was happy to see that annoying lady leave- holy geesh! i can't blame the dog for being a spaz!! i loved her "goodbye msg" where she shushed the dog like it was nothing... i loved that they edited it like that hahaha. what a moron, and i hope she sees herself on tv and smartens up.

ok, bella's mom totally snapped on the judges, i thought for sure she was leaving kuz of it! i would have been happy if they'd have kicked out both of them!!! i know elvis' dad was just sitting there blending into the background, letting the other 2 shoot themselves in the foot lol.

it was so sweet to see star's owner get all choked up, and the dude once he came back to the house too (i was a little too!!) it's so true how our dogs are like our children- i know mine is, and i'd be a mess if anything ever happened to Zoey...

my dog makes me a better person.

Re: Greatest American Dog - Watching?

I caught this show for the first time last night and enjoyed it.  I have to admit...I do like these reality shows.  Embarrassed

I think my fav is the older gent from Texas with his best girl Star.  I like his style and she is definately his heart dog.  Scared the devil out of me when she yelped and he had to take her to the vet.  I wonder what it was that got her?

The boxer was impressive and gained his master a win.  Winning that room (can't remember what they called it), reminds me of Big Brother.  LOL

Although the black Giant Schnauzer is gorgeous...poor thing was doomed with her master.  That lady would scare me into disobedience too.  I figured she would go...until the end when the 3 were up for elimination and the lady who had a dress on her dog had a temper tantrum.  I just knew she was going.  But, the judges made their decision based on how well the dogs did in the OB sessions, I suppose.  Poor Elvis may be doomed pretty soon with his confusing master.  Sad

One of the things that drove me a bit crazy was those folks who constantly repeated their commands to the dogs.  Sit.  Sit.  Sit.   Stay.  Stay.  Stay.  LOL.  That now drives me crazy because NOW I know better and used to do the same thing.  I so conscious of it now

Oh man, me too! I probably still do it a little bit but nothing like I used to. Watching some people in action with their dogs like on that show really makes you wonder how/why they ever obey us Huh?

My faves are the bulldog and of course, Star. She's so sweet and I felt for they guy when she was injured. Poor girl. I loved that bulldog being such a good boy when that food was only inches from his nose Big Smile

I couldnt agree more with you!!! But I was smitten with the cute Boxer guy, LOL. I dislike baby talk also but it was almost cute coming from him......if it woulda came from one of those two prissy girls I would have been more annoyed, ha ha!

I think teh judges were hard on the lady who dressed up her dog but I think that was a reflection of their frusteration with her in general and they were trying to find a reason to pick on her. Her and the mini schnauzer owner just get under my skin and are a example of my least favorite type of dog owner. DH said that maybe the judges went overboard about the dress to send a message to dog owners at home. Which brings me to my next debate with DH......

He was a bit dissapointed in the performance of the dogs on the show as a whole. He was making the point that there are a gazillion more special and super dogs in the world. My argument was that it really seems like they were shooting for the average dog owner or at least a standard of the basic obediance MOST dogs should have. I mean if they had a bunch of super dogs on there then the average dog owner would be lax in trying to achieve that example of the dogs on the show. I think by having average dogs on there the general public can look at them and say "hey, I can get my dog to do that" and maybe make a extra effort. I just think not all dog owners are of the same ilk of the members we have here on the forum, most I see in public are problematic ya know? I guess I'm just ranting.

It seems as if this episodes tasks were easier then last episodes. I was pretty confident Rory and Primo would have excelled throughought this whole episode......excluding the spin left, spin right .....we've never even attempted that but the right/left shake they know!

Oh I couldnt stop laughing at the bulldog when they put the food infront of his face, he looked so pitiful, LOL!

Re: Greatest American Dog - Watching?

Oh my goodness...the look on that bulldog's face when he was inches from the food.  Good boy!  That was restraint extraordinare!

I too kept saying...Heidi can do that, Heidi can do that...up until the spin left, spin right thing...we haven't tackled that task.

I agree with you AL...that the producers had JQ Public in mind when selecting the contestants.  If they weren't every day dogs and owners...it would be just another Pet Star like on Animal Planet.  Big Smile
