What does your dog try to eat on walks?

My cairn will try to snarf up cat, skunk, and possum poop when we walk.  Most of the time I can tell by his body language that he is on a poop scent trail, and I can pull him away. One time he swallowed a fully feathered baby dove that was sitting on the sidewalk.  My mistake was that I thought it would fly up as we approached.  It didn't and my dog swallowed it without hardly chewing.  He will obey "drop it" with his toys and bones.

LOL, this is a funny thread. Well my answer is my two will eat anything they can get their hands on. They leave other dog's poop alone thank god, but they will eat grass, sticks, trash, etc. I have to watch them like hawks.

Road kill mostly. If someone threw out some left over MCdonalds then they will try to get at that as well. Ofcourse I try not to let them eat things but with a Lab that cna be hard. lol If I see them going for something I say "Eh Eh, Thats not yours." and give them a tug on the leash and they will leave it alone. Usually.

Dead rabbits and bits of rabbits and birds as well as coyote poop and once Hektor retrieved a coyote head and brought it back to me. Hektor will eat anything.

Gunnar will try to eat dead things but if he has a live animal or one recently killed he will just carry it around in his mouth. He once carried a baby bird around for hours in the back yard before we noticed. The poor thing was still alive.

Shadow has picked up mice and once, he accidently bit one in half. Another time, before I could spot it, he picked up a pork chop remnant and ate, bone and all. Thankfully, it was crumbly bone.

Re: What does your dog try to eat on walks?

On walks nothing as they always have their heads up looking around at everything. We walk on gravel, asphalt roads and sidewalks. In the backyard off leash is a different story. Molly will eat anything not edible like paper, plastic, cardboard. Anything that found its way in the yard. Bella likes dead things. This morning DH had to take a dead bird out of her mouth. They both like to eat grass.

The other night I was on the PC and Molly came from the kitchen at a good pace and laid down in the living room floor. When she does this I know she must have found something she shouldn`t have and she had a guilty look on her face so I asked her if she had anything. She just stared at me. I went in and looked between her front legs nope nothing. So I lifted up one paw nothing. I lifted up the other paw and there she was hiding a bread tie no doubt to chew on if I wouldn`t have caught her.

Fortunately, the only thing they will try to stop and eat are dead animals.  Unfortunately....yeah, dead animals.

nothing...luckily I don't live in an area where trash is that easily gotten off the side of the road. But in the time I've had Molly I've never had her try to get anything off the road if we are in a different area. She'll bring food with her (pizza bone) and carry it but doesn't try to eat anything if there is something there.

Emma doesn't try to eat anything. Even if she did.... she's had so much stuff dragged out of her mouth that her "give" is impeccable.

Ena will eat anything that won't eat her first. It's something we're working on, starting with dog poop.  Yuck!

Re: What does your dog try to eat on walks?

I'm pretty lucky with Kirby since he is too much of a pretty boy to be caught dead eating poop or any road kill.  Sniff it safely from a distance yes, eat, or touch it, no.  Honestly half the time he is in too much of lallaa land when we walk to even notice food on the street till we have already passed it and he missed his chance.  Sometimes he doesn't even notice the treats I fling him on walks when training...

The only time I can think of him grabbing something was when he found a chicken bone in some high grass, but he dropped it immediatly on command.

Re: What does your dog try to eat on walks?

Penny goes for the human food. If she finds some sort of discarded human food she gulps it down as fast as possible because she KNOWS I'm gonna make her hand it over if I catch her and she doesn't want to! She's also partial to kangaroo poo from time to time.

Kivi Tarro is a puppy, so naturally everything finds its way into his mouth. He especially loves leaves. He found a chokoe on the driveway last week and went nuts over that. He picked the biggest one and took it home with him. He thinks rabbit poo is candy and I'm reckoning he'll feel the same way about roo poo when he encounters some.

Pyry once ate human ***! Don't even ask how he found some of that. The story is too revolting to repeat.

A lab we know once gulped up a dead fish he found on the trail quick as you like. Almost didn't see it! It was hilarious because he'd been told on the way out to leave it and had, but on the way back in he downed it before anyone had a chance to tell him to leave it.

Re: What does your dog try to eat on walks?

The only thing Ari doesn't seem to eat is poop - and we haven't come across any dead animals (bugs are a gourmet treat though apparently), dirt, rocks, sticks, grass, pine cones, leaves all fair game.  We don't walk far or long, and her "give" is nonexistent still (working on this!), but needless to say I'm constantly stooped down pulling things out of her mouth!  I am glad though that poop seems to hold no eating interest for her thus far!
