Frog Leg Stew - No Frogs Were Harmed, etc.

This one looks absolutely vominous but the dogs went nuts for it!  It is a new offering here on the farm.  It makes a nice rich broth that goes well over kibble.

Edited to add, since I got a lot of comments on the humorous name for this recipe:  No frogs were harmed in the making of this stew.  It's chicken or other meat, with blueberries, and ends up looking sort of grey-green.

As always, this is for supplemental feeding only.

    Frog Leg Stew

    • 2 lb chicken quarters (I divide these in half so they fit more conveniently in the pot)
    • 2 cups water or broth of choice
    • 1/2 cup dry green peas
    • 1/2 cup dry lentils
    • 1/2 pound carrot, diced
    • 1/2 pound zucchini, peeled, one inch chunks (I quartered and then sliced thickly)
    • 2 stalks celery, chopped finely
    • 1 cup blueberries, mashed

Put all but the blueberries in a crockpot.  Cook on low for about 24 hours, or high for about 16 hours, or until largest bones in chicken can be mashed easily (be sure you check the middle of the bone).  Give it a stir a couple times while cooking, and check liquid levels, but as the veggies cook down there should be plenty of liquid.  Once bones are mashable, allow to cool to room temp.  At this point, I take a potato masher and smoosh everything up so that the bits of stuff are evenly distributed, since I feed a large crew and no one gets more than a 1/4 cup at any one time.  Minimally though, it's best to tear apart the meat so that it's possible to serve a smaller portion than a 1/4 pound of meat!  Now, once it's cool, add the mashed blueberries.  At this point you should see why I've named this one "Frog Leg Stew."  Ewwwwww.

Allergy alternative:  boneless lamb or pork, or beef ribs (remove the bones once the meat falls off).  If you are patient, you could also use small pork ribs as these will eventually reach the mashable state also - but it takes about three days!

    Re: Frog Leg Stew

I kept reading the recipe thinking "where's the frog legs?" and was pleasantly surprised to find that there aren't any. That looks like a great recipe. I'd have to use pork but I think I'm going to give it a try.

Yes, I was wondering whether that would throw anyone!  Big Smile

I included the allergy alternatives because I know chicken/poultry's a problem for a lot of you out there (this one's for you, Bugsy!).

Addendum - this is not for the dog who has a tendency towards funk-itis.  I should have mentioned that before!  Or, you can accompany this dish with some digestive enzymes to assist with the extra soluble fiber.  Or, you can feed a good helping and send your dog overseas to help with the war on terror.  Canine WMDs!  Big Smile

Good to know. I'm fortunate that neither of my dogs have much of an issue with intestinal upsets.

    Re: Frog Leg Stew

The title and the first post did confuse me.  Frog legs are quite good and there is a restaurant here that is well known for serving frog legs.  I was wondering if there is a difference in the frogs served by restaurants and the ones in the backyard or by the local pond.

    Re: Frog Leg Stew

I think the ones in the restaurants are cultured/farmed.  They are usually a particular hybrid of two breeds of frogs.  I think bullfrogs are used in Cajun cooking, though.

To be clear, no frogs were harmed in the making of this stew.  I love frogs.  Live frogs.  I had frog once and it tasted like chicken.  Very skinny chicken.

    Re: Frog Leg Stew

If the frog says "ribbit" it is of one specific species....there is only one that makes that noise.  I'd look up the name but it's in a book I lent to someone.

That being said, if you go to a restaurant and they serve you frog in such a way that you know what sound it makes, I would worry.

Becca, I don't homecook for my Ben, as such, but do make kibble toppers for him and this looks like something he might like.  (Oh who am I kidding he likes everything.)  I have a crockpot so I may try it out.

Not sure how that helps since the restaurant would serve frog only one way, the leg portions. If any sound would come from my plate served in a restaurant, I would not only worry, I would skedaddle or hightail it out of there.

My point precisely, so would I.
