earthquake in china on monday, please consider helping! (janetmichel3009)

hi guys. i'm not sure how much you guys heard about this, but there was a huge earthquake on monday in china's sichuan province. it was a 7.9!

it could even be felt here in beijing and our office building got evacuated. noone got hurt over here, but the situation in sichuan is horrible. last i heard, i think the deathtoll was 40000 (edit: i misheard, it's actually about 14800)

please you guys. i know you have good hearts. you can donate online over the american red cross:

    http://www.redcross.org/news/in/profiles/Intl_profile_ChinaEarthquake.html

i am already donating over SMS here, and will be going to one of the relief organizitions this weekend.

    thanks a lot!

My heart breaks for those affected by this horrible tragedy. I hope that those whose lives have been taken by the earthquake and its aftermath have found peace, and may their families and loved ones be comforted in their time of need.

thanks guys! over here in beijing, it really wasnt a big deal. i didnt even feel it (was in a car at the time).

but my maid (dont ask... lol) is from there. her parents, husband and two sons are ok, but their house is damaged and they dont dare go inside. living outdoors at the moment. rains and bad weather are making things worse!

anyways... thank you for your concern! this really is a horrible thing to happen to anyone!

Is it true that China isn't even accepting funds/aid, or they aren't using them or something?  I overheard a bit of a rumor, but since I don't know the whole story I thought I would ask.

I know that Myanmar wasn't accepting an funds or aid after the cyclone, but I haven't heard anything about China. Its possible that the rumors got mixed up.

I think you are right Alieliza, it was Myanmar.  Both situations are such horrible tragedies.

5.5. aftershock they say...those poor people, rescuers and victims both.

From the Yahoo article on the aid:

"The first international relief crews arrived in the disaster zone, with Japanese rescuers starting work. China initially was reluctant to accept foreign offers of help, but the Foreign Ministry said Friday that specialist teams from Russia, South Korea and Singapore also were welcome.

It was the first time ever that China accepted outside professionals for domestic disaster relief, Foreign Ministry counselor Li Wenliang told Xinhua."

ETA: I think even the US, also refrained from accepting some help during Katrina if I recall...from Canada I think.

Re: earthquake in china on monday, please consider helping! (janetmichel3009)

hmm, yeah. from what i heard the chinese goverment was really open about this one. aparently foreign news crews were the first ones allowed into the disaster area. but if they werent accepting funds, over here we'd probably hear about it last... :)

anyways. i went to one of our local cafe's. they have another cafe in chengdu (capital of sichuan, the effected province) and were collecting clothes, tents, etc as well as monetary donations to be shipped over there. DHL offered to ship all the stuff over there for free. so i went to bring some of my old clothes and some money to donate. i was actually planning of helping them out, maybe with organizing, or packing, or loading or something. but when i got there, there was a line of DHL people passing down boxes (the cafe is on the second floor). inside their a third of the place (which is pretty big in the first place) was PACKED to the ceiling with stuff. the place was so crowded with people packing and moving boxes, that i just left my stuff there and left. i was just totally in the way.

anyways. over here it seems like everyone is doing SOMETHING. almost everyone has donated money. a lot of people are donating blood. quite amazing...

last night there were STILL reports of people being dug out alive.

this is all the updates i have so far...

Strange, how the commi chinese government has this old fashioned outlook .....they hate anything western.....but, they love our money.......

I hope that all people can get the relief they need and are looking for........

well, i have grown up here, so in a way i am just used to it.

my take is, the more china opens up, the more they can profit. but also, they have to have more disclosure, and slowly things change. this is a culture that has been totalitarian for CENTURIES. changes dont happen over night. we might not like it, but that's the way it is.

trust me, a lot of these issues are closer to my heart than you know. my mother's side of the family is from xinjiang province of the wei majority (also called uygur). they are facing the exact same issues that tibet is, only they DONT have the publicity that the dalai lama provides for tibet, PLUS they are muslim, and so in the eyes of the world not worth fighting for... things arent always the way they should be around here. but staying away is not an option for me, nor is it a solution!
