    I'm Ordering Books - Please Advise (4iC)

I have had so many wonderful recommendations of great books to get over the months and now I'm ready to order some. However, I can't remember the ones that everyone recommended. Sad

    I'm planning on ordering these:

Bones Would Rain From the Sky
For the Love of a Dog
The Other End of the Leash
    The Cautious Canine
    Feisty Fido

The last 2 are for B'asia's leash aggression (or anxiety or whatever it is).

Are there any others that I should look into? Or do you have any comments on the list above?

Thanks for any and all input!

Of that list, I would choose For the Love of a Dog.  Very well written, with McConnell's usual wit.  The Feisty Fido and Cautious Canine booklets are so inexpensive that you could just order all and have a McConnell weekend LOL.

Of those, I have Other End of the Leash (awesome!) and Cautious Canine (inexpensive, short, might as well get it at some point). :)

     Thanks! Smile

I have edited my first post to make it more clear. I'm already planning on ordering those 5 books and wanted to know if there are others I should consider instead or perhaps in addition. Thank you!

    • Don't Shoot the Dog! by Karen Pryor - basic understanding of learning theory and how dogs learn, pretty objective/scientific, straight forward and not full of emotional response
    • Click to Calm by Emma Parsons - even if you don't care to clicker train, this book helped me understand how redirecting a dog's focus in general can help them overcome anxiety/reactivity/fear.  Basically it taught me I can "block" those feeling by being quick and distracting her with performing simple obedience while the stressful thing happened.  Then over time, she associates the stressful thing with confidence building and even sometimes getting treats.
    • Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson - I think this is my favorite as far as general dog ownership and understanding dogs.  Some people don't like the more ballsy approach but I do.

I own both Click to Calm (would be really helpful for you with leash aggression) and Control Unleashed. They are both fantastic books.

I have these on my to order list:

Its a Dog's Life...but Its your Carpet:  Everything you Ever Wanted to Know About Your Four Legged Friend By Dr. Justine Lee.  (April 2008)  Supposed to be a funny collection of answers to all the questions you've (who?, not me Big Smile)  always wanted to ask.  Written by a vet.

Good Dog. Stay.  By Anna Quindlen  (November 2007)  Its about the author's beloved black lab; and the lessons she has learned observing him.

Marley and Me: Life and Love with the Worlds Worst Dog by John Grogan

And two more just for fun:

101 Dog Tricks by Kyra Sundance

Help Me, Mr. Mutt: Expert Answers for Dogs with People Problems by Janet Stevens and Susan Crummell.

4iC, hope you weren't looking for anything really serious.  Wink

Embarrassed to say I own all of them. I haven't yet read the last 2. (Bought them a few weeks ago, actually).  The first three are EXCELLENT. I've got tun but I'll respond more when I'm back from getting my daughter.

I would have to say that no dognerd's library is complete without these books.  I also liked "The Rosetta Bone" by Cheryl Smith, even though it's more geared to the average owner than the above suggestions.  Any of Brenda Aloff's books are thoughtfully written and a good buy.   Also, "Positive Perspectives 2" by Pat Miller.  "Barking: The Sound of a Language" by Turid Rugaas.  Is your card maxed out yet????

Re: I'm Ordering Books - Please Advise (4iC)

I second the Click to Calm recommendation, it's so multi-functional for alot of different fear/aggression issues!

I've only read a couple of the chapters in this one, but they're all heart-warmers:

Shelter Dogs: Amazing Stories of Adopted Strays by Peg Kehret

    Shelter Dogs by Tracer Scott

The Dogs Who Found Me : What I've Learned from Pets Who Were Left Behind by Ken Foster

And on my own personal wish list:

101 Dog Tricks: Step-by-Step Activities to Engage, Challenge, and Bond with Your Dog by Kyra Sundance

    Book Cover

Amazing Dog Trick Kit: For Overachieving Pooches and Their Proud Owners (Special Value) by Steve Duno

Re: I'm Ordering Books - Please Advise (4iC)

I love the options you've chosen. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the good reading you'll have to do!

I also love the recommendations of Click to Calm, Culture Clash, and DSTD. The last two are I feel fundamental dog-books (not even so much about training anything specific, but more for understanding) all dog parents should have. Click to Calm is as the others have stated.

For an ethological read, I think you would really enjoy Dogs: A New Understanding of Origin, Behaviour, and Evolution, by Ray and Lorna Coppinger. Fantastic read.

Some of my other enjoyed readings are Scaredy Dog (by Ali Brown), Dogs are from Neptune (By Jean Donaldson), and I actually really liked the Stanley Coren books (The Intelligence of Dogs, How to Speak Dog, etc). Not everyone likes Stanley Coren, but I really enjoy his works. I've read all but one of them (mom owns the others that I didn't list above), and they are entertaining and very informative. I learned a lot from them.

Thank you all for your input today! I really appreciate it. I'm going to tag this thread for future reference. I think I'll add Culture Clash to the current list and stop there for now, but if anyone wants to add more, feel free. Smile

My latest two that are not on the above list :

Canine Body Language, A Photographic Guide by Brenda Aloff

The Domestic Dog, Its Evolution, Behaviour and Interactions with People, edited by James Serpell (this is a collection of essays. I enjoyed some more than others but there are a couple of  extraordinary - in my eyes - research ones on feral dogs in Italy)

    Nathalie & the Monstresses

Re: I'm Ordering Books - Please Advise (4iC)

I've been wanting a book called How to Right a Dog Gone Wrong by Pamela Dennison.

Also, if you just want kind of a memoir type book to read the book Pack of Two by Caroline Knapp was very good.  She goes thru her whole relationship with her dog and how it effected her life, very easy for me to relate too.

Re: I'm Ordering Books - Please Advise (4iC)

Don't Shoot.... is a really good all-rounder.  It doesn't go into anything specific (thre's no step by step "How to" kind of stuff) but as Liesje said, great for improving your understanding which has a positive knock on effect.  I found it was great for perpective.  I don't like her "definition" on punishment in it - too emotional and from a behavioural point of view, technically incorrect.  But apart from that, a most definitely must have.

You MUST own Click to Calm for B'asia.   I used very similar principles (main difference being no clicker) on my own dog and it worked extremely well.

"Give a man a fire and he's warm for a day, but set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life." (Pratchett, Jingo)

"I used to look at [my dog] Smokey and think, 'If you were a little smarter you could tell me what you were thinking,' and he'd look at me like he was saying, 'If you were a little smarter, I wouldn't have to.'" - Fred Jungclaus
