Canidae users... New illnesses breaking out.. anyone affected?

Hi.  I'm new here, and haven't had a chance to introduce myself, but wanted to get this information out, and find out if anyone else is affected....A friend of mine told me of a club member who's dog eats Canidae Platinum fell ill this weekend.  She took the food back to the store, and the store owner commented that three other dogs had been sickened as well.

I feed the All Life Stages, and noticed that my Shepherd, Najda had a bit of loose stool yesterday, yet I couldn't pinpoint a cause.  I think I'm going to cook for them for the next little bit until we find out exactly what's what here.

My service dog, Dawson got seriously ill two years ago (he nearly died).  He was on PMI Exclusive/Performance Formula at the time.  It was when all the recalls started.  I kept looking for this brand's recall, but Purina didn't post any of my type of food. Come to find out that Purina had outsourced two months worth of processing to Diamond Pet Food, where the food was manufactured in their warehouse; which was tainted!  As sson as I  stopped feeding the food, Dawson improved and is back at work.  It nearly took his life, though, and I'm not ready to go through that again.!

If I hear any new news, I will post it immediately.  We have contacted Canidae and are awaiting response.  They are usually really easy to get a hold of, and as of this moment, they are not making themselves available for answering questions.

I use Canidae ALS right now.  I haven't noticed any sickness, but I can keep my eye open...

My brother, sister, and mom all feed canidae ALS and have had no problems. My two have been at my parent's eating it as well for the last few weeks on and off during my interviews and they are fine too.

I'm from S. Jersey...my friend is from N. Jersey; and I just heard back from another member on my horse forum who has a dog on the ALS formula whose dog is ill as well.... I'll find out where she's from and let you know. There are some new reports of this recent illness on the Canidae site.

I apologize... it wasn't on the site as I'd thought, it was on consumer affairs:  http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/canidae.html

As an update... a friend of mine (the one who first told me of  her friend's dogs being sick), got an email back from Canidae, stating that there was no known issues with the food.

At this point, I had taken all my dogs off the food, and was cooking for them.  They all got better immediately.  I decided to try again, once we'd heard from the company, figuring it just must be coincidence...

I picked up a new bag today, and they all got violently sick on it... I mixed the food with some rice, so it wouldn't be a jolt to their symptoms; and yet, they still got sick....  I emailed my friend, who told me that a friend (who is a vet and uses the food in her clinic) had found some bits of red plastic and hair interwoven in the nuggets.  Another friend from the same club has four dogs sickened; who got better as soon as she stopped feeding the food...and another is in the ER at the moment, and her dog is in very serious condition--that dog eats ALS, too.

I wrote to Canidae myself today; I haven't heard back yet.  I don't know what is going on here, but I will keep you all posted.

I feed Canidae, although I don't know how much longer I will use it.  I found Corn in the dry food and contacted Canidae and they seemed like it wasn't a big deal.  They had no idea how it got in there.  I asked if they process other foods in their plant and they said no.  My dogs do well on it, I feed ALS.  I told them it concerned me since Corn should not have been in there.  The Rep wasn't sympathetic in the least.

I hope you get to the bottom of this; it really does seem like there's something wrong with the food. Does anyone know if they make their own food?

I just bought 3 bags today and they are all the batch 40461-01040. The same as listed on the consumer page. I'm taking them back and changing food. This is ridiculous!

SEE UPDATE BELOW (Top of page 2) This appears to be an isolated problem and not an issue for most people on Canidae.

Just FYI, I just got back from returning my Canidae. I got Fromm 4 Star (a 5 star dry food). I've used Fromm before and I know my guys like it.

To the OP, if you hear any more about Canidae, I'd sure love to hear about it. Thanks for posting!

We had a conversation about this recently. If you look at ANY pet food listed on that site you will find things like "my dog died because of this food" so on and so forth. How do you know that this isn't a competitor planting information?

We don't. And I considered that.

However, I just posted about this on another board and a person there also had a similar experience. Opened a new bag (from a different store than usual), all dogs got sick. Bought another bag. Dogs were fine. Still, it could be a coincidence. We just don't know...

Re: Canidae users... New illnesses breaking out.. anyone affected?

Last year in September 2007, Canidae went through a similar problem with accusations of acetaminophen in their food and dogs dieing and getting sick.  It was proving to be a hoax although they could never find out who started it.   People speculate that anyone who start such a rumor must be profiting some way from it.  Either way, what is a user to do?  I wouldn't take a chance.  Candice needs to address this immediately.
