New Member Question. Will you share experiences of places where your dog accompanies you?

Hello I am a new member and also a new Maltese Mom. I have read some posts in various forums where people talk of taking their Malty everywhere with them. I love my fur baby so much that I would love to take him with me to all the places allowed. My problem is that I don't know what places will allow him except the pet stores, vets, and yes a local fabric store (It was by invitation). I was buying fabric to make him a coat to go outside when temps get really low.

I would love to read of other members experiences and suggestions of types of retail establishments that will allow toy breeds into their store. I know that restaurants, medical facilities, and any place that is inspected regularly by the health department is out. What about department stores or craft stores? Casper is 17 weeks old and weighs 2.4 lbs. I carry him in a thick upholstery bag that looks like a big purse. He loves it and can lay curled up on the bottom to sleep and no one even knows he is in the bag. He never barks when he is in his carrier bag either.

I am looking forward to reading others experiences and suggestions.

Welcome to the forum!  I don't know of any places around here in Pgh. you're allowed to take your dogs, w/ the exception of the places you mentioned.  Pet store and vets.  It is my understanding "no dogs allowed" pretty much everywhere.  Although, we did go to a restaurant off the river and had our little maltese tied up down in the yard, we were eating on the outside porch.  The waitress, who has gotten to know us very well, and who we just love, saw her down there, and felt bad for her, because she was barking up at us.  She allowed us to bring her up.  We didn't want her to get into any trouble, or anything, but with her being so small, she's 14 at only about 3-4lbs (tops), she said it would be fine.  So, that was the only time we had Tabitha anywhere, besides the vets and pet store.

Handle every situation like a dog.

Sorry, I'm in the same boat.  My city must not be dog friendly.  I've never ever seen dogs anywhere besides the pet store (besides service dogs, which are still few and far between).  Many of our parks and public areas are also off-limits to dogs.  The only time I've ever seen a non-service dog in something other than a pet store was at a bagel shop, I saw this girl in my school and she had a Min Pin in her purse.  She just came in, got her bagel, and left.  The dog never touched the ground.  For pet therapy class, we take our dogs to Home Depot, but I think we have a special agreement with them.  I've never seen other dogs at Home Depot.  Everything around here are huge chain stores, no little mom-and-pop shops that would invite pets.  I don't know anyone that is allowed to bring their dog to work either.

I have taken my dogs in to video stores - on non peak hours.

There's a doggy ice cream shop that I take them to.

    hmm...I think that's about it.

    Hello caspersmom!

Welcome to the forum & congradulations on the Maltese [one of my other top favorite toy breeds]. I am a Pomeranian owner & lover; I take my little girl "Kayla" with me everywhere I possibly can.

The catch is... you can't take them inside. I have attempted to bring her places but there will be signs everywhere stating that only working dogs for the blind, deaf, etc are allowed. I have seen some people with their tiny dogs in the mall in their purse (I have tried this but been caught and told to leave).

I live in MASSACHUSETTS and I know for a fact around here they are no "dog friendly" places unless it is PETSMART or PETCO.

If you move to FRANCE they allow dogs everywhere! :o) Pretty cool huh?

I know a lot of people who take their toy dogs everywhere in their purse or in stroller and don't get caught. But that's just it, try not to get caught, b/c its the law not to bring them places. If you think about it... when it comes to resturants it makes sense. And most dogs are not potty trained so its just a health hazard.

My Pom loves car rides and I'll bring her everywhere with me if I won't be away from the car more than 30mins.

I would do a local search to see what's legal and where you take take him...

Enjoy him! Toy breeds are the best! *hugs*

Our dogs are allowed (leashed) in more county parks, trails, etc. We have a nice trail that covers the whole county that you can take your dog with you on. And of course, in the dog parks.

Some places have outdoor patios at their resturants where you can take your dog with you - not inside though. We also have a few doggy beaches - Casey gets to go for the first time this weekend! Some of the Starbucks around will let you order with you dog, and they will bring it out to you - depends on the store though.

A coworker of mine recently snuck her chihuahua foster into the mall...dog doesn't do much though, except sit there and look cute.

The town I live in isn't all that dog friendly, but the town I work in is. A lot of local stores will allow you to bring your dogs in. If they do that they have a dog friendly sticker in the window and a water bowel outside. Restuarants with outdoor seeting around here will normally let you have your dogs with you. I just always ask before I sit down.

I also bring my dogs to work with me sometimes. There is no rule against it in my office building. I only bring them if I know it is going to be slow.

I guess LA is dog crazy. I know I can take my dog to work, the mall, and a lot of botique shops - just as long as she is leashed ofcourse.

    Cute puppy btw!

Re: New Member Question. Will you share experiences of places where your dog accompanies you?

I have taken my dog to the train station (to meet friends or buy a ticket in advance), to a couple of dog-friendly restaurants and pubs that had outdoor seating, my local chemist, pet stores, vets and the camera shop I do a lot of business with.

I live in the UK, though, I believe it is more dog-friendly than some parts of the US.

I think it is.  When I watch Victoria Stillwell, they are always taking dogs to run in other people's fields or going "into town" to little shops.  We have nothing like that here, at least not in my area.  You don't let your dog loose in a field unless it's specified a dog park or it belongs to you (leash laws).  Also, there are health codes about dogs in eating establishments, regardless of whether or not the owner/manager wouldn't mind.  Besides that, we just have chain/franchise restaurants and stores, no little local shops where you know the owners and they don't care, nothing like that.  Sad

Re: New Member Question. Will you share experiences of places where your dog accompanies you?

Where I used to live in California, Rascal was particularly welcomed in hardware stores and at my bank. I also took him to private meetings, such as with my accountant or my attorney. I think in general, anywhere they're not particularly concerned about delicate stuff getting messed up (like, a lingerie boutique might not necessarily go over that well) or about food/health concerns (I'd avoid the doctor's office, lol) if they don't specifically prohibit it then it's probably okay. Wouldn't hurt to call first to check, though.

Of course this goes without saying, but since I'm annoying I'll say it anyway - make sure that anywhere you take your dog both you and your dog are behaving in such a way that other dog owners will be more welcomed instead of less welcomed. No dogs in restaurants, clean after your pup, teach your dog good greeting manners and to be quiet in public, etc.

    Welcome to the boards :)

Re: New Member Question. Will you share experiences of places where your dog accompanies you?

Luckily in CA there are many places (including most outdoor restaurants) that allow very small, contained dogs.  I don't think it's the same if you have a big dog, but if you have a small dog and have it contained in a bag or stroller, most places seem to allow it.  The big exception is places that sell food.  I can't really figure out why outdoor restaurants are different, but they are.

It is different when you have a small dog.  They can be contained in ways that a larger dog can't, and therefore seem to be more acceptable.  A large dog, walking on his own paws, could have an accident or brush up against someone.  A small dog, entirely contained in a pet carrier of some sort, cannot.  So I think this is why they are more acceptable.

Reading others posts makes me very happy to be living in CA!  I guess my only other choices would be France or the UK.

^ Actually, I think much of Europe is considerably more dog-friendly than the U.S.  :-)  I love it.

In my town, the only place I can think of that actually allows dogs (besides the vet or pet stores), is outside of Starbucks, as somebody already mentioned.  I have a Chihuahua, and he's small enough that I'm sure I could easily *sneak* him into many places if I wanted to.  Don't think I would though, unless I absolutely had to bring him with me.  He's never even been in a bag, so he wouldn't know what to think.  LOL.

I take Emma... everywhere. She is extremely well behaved, and I live in a town full of mom and pop shops. I don't take her into grocery stores or resturants. I do take her to the bank, clothes shopping, to resturants with outside seating, coffee shops, etc etc. She loves every bit of it.

I have been known to sneak Rascal into a sandwich shop (or similar) to grab a bite so we could eat it outside or take it to a park or something... Embarrassed  He really, really likes riding in a backpack, though. Weird dog. I have to keep my backpack way up high or else he never gets out of it!
