SEPARATED NAIL! Woobie got a Boo Boo!

Crying  Woobie came in from outside and started licking at his front paw.  I checked it out and the nail on his outside toe was pointing up and underneath was this white and bloody stump!  Holy cow did it look painful!  I took him to the vet and they trimmed up the nail, said it would probably fall off and cleaned it out, gave him an injection for the pain and gave us Rimadyl and Simplicef to give at home for the next 8 days.  He has to keep it bandaged up for a while as the quick heals over and forms a protective covering.  When he's standing, the poor thing just holds the paw up in the air, it must just be throbbing, it looked so raw and exposed.

Keeping him quiet should be fun once he's feeling better.   And Indie is determined to chew off the soft cast for him!  The best thing about the visit is that I found out that the vet I met at the dog park and really liked is actually a new vet at my old vet's practice!  So now I get the best of a new vet fresh with new ideas from school (she turned me on to arabinogalactan powder for Woobie's anal glands) and the old vet who's been with m for years that I love!

I'd have taken gory pictures but my daughter's run off to NYC and took her digital camera with her.  You're lucky, it was gross!

Awww, I'm so disappointed  that you don't have pictures; Wink

Poor Woobie; That has to be sooo painful. I hope it heals fast. Three legs sure comes in handy at a time like this; Jessie's left rear leg swelled several years ago from a water snake bite and she got along fine with three legs while it was healing. I'll be sending healing vibes; will his nail grow back?

Life isn't about waiting through the storm; it's about learning to dance in the rain.

Thanks for the vibes!  The vet said it can take 2-3 months for the nail to grow back.  My daughter lost a toenail and it took 6 months to grow back!  You can really tell when the Rimadyl's worn off because he limps pretty severely (you'd think he'd just hold it up, but he continues to put it down).  He's not a happy camper when I take Indie for a walk and leave him behind, oh the dirty looks I get!

Do keep an eye on the healing process of the nail. My Scottie girl did this and Im sad to say it never healed because it was Melanoma that started in the nail bed. Her's looked like a blood stump and white too. Like nothing Iv ever seen before. We had the vet changing the bandage and watching it..... but then it never wanted to heal after 3 weeks....

She was gone in 3 months. We had to say good bye to her this past Aug... ....  Just stay on top of it... Okay... just as a precaution....

Eeek!  OMG, that's awful.  I'm so sorry for your loss, that must have just been so unexpected and well, terrible.  Sad  I'll definitely keep an eye on it, changing the dressing last night was a huge pain and I only got the briefest of glances at it.  Keeping him still was like trying to wrestle a greased pig!  The nail is still there, couldn't touch it to see if it would come off, and there's a gap between it and the stump which is just white now.  Gooped it up with antibiotic ointment and got clean gauze on it and replaced the vet wrap.  I think I'll have them do the next change so they can get a better look than I could at how it's progressing.
