Keeping a dog in a pen for 21 hours a day is not humane. I don't blame the Shih Tzu at all for hating being in the pen. He's used to freedom and confinement is all your Yorkie has ever known. Another dog is not the answer for this situation. That just makes 2 dogs who are confined for most of their lives.

PLEASE, for the dogs' sakes find them another home. You don't have enough time to care for a dog properly. Keeping them would be 100% selfish.

     I agree 100% with tamara!!!!

To the OP,i think a stuffed toy dog would fit your lifestyle better at this time. Dogs need alot of time and effort put into them to make them well adjusted house pets, you have already admitted that you dont have the time,so i think the most selfless thing you could do is rehome those dogs to someone who has the time and want for them.

If you truely care for them you will find them a better home,a home that you have carefully vetted so they are not put in the same situation or worse, you have to put them FIRST.They didnt ask to live with you,you brought them into your home and you have let them down.

I personally dont think dogs should be locked up at all, thank god you dont crate them!! But regardless, 21 hours a day of confinement AND isolation is abuse in my books.Dogs need human interaction aswell, going out an buying another dog and putting him in this same unhappy and inapropriate situation was completely irresponsible of you.

Dogs also need outside stimulation/exercise on a daily basis,a play in the yard isnt enough, neither is a run every second night!

I'm sorry to be so blunt, but your dogs wellbeing and happiness are forefront in my mind right now.IMO your situation just isnt right for a dog, many people wait years before their lives allow for a dog.

Remember owning a dog is a privilege, not a right! Yes,people have to work, but they dont HAVE to have a dog!

I'd rather see these dogs crated TEMPORARILY, say for a couple months, so you can get them house trained and soon give them run of the house during the day and at least have them in your bedroom at night. I would definitely have a dog walker come in if you can't get home on your lunch break or consider doggy daycare 2 or 3 days a week. If none of the solutions in this thread can work for you, please consider a new home for these dogs. 21 hours is too long in a pen.

It would seem that a cat might be a better pet for you guys.  You don't have to worry about accidents because they go in a litter box.  They don't bark or require walks for exercise.  They do require attention, proper vet care and stimulation in the way of toys and chasing games, but all that can be done inside the home.

I recommend you find great homes for the two little guys and get a cat.  Smile

Shih Tzu's are so precious. They need to be with us and play and go for walks. They are so smart and funny. They love to learn obedience and tricks and love being with family. Trudy is always close to me. Being in a pen is sad for that long.

I Am Your Dog... Author Unknown

I am your dog, and I have a little something I'd like to whisper in your
    ear.

I know that you humans lead busy lives. Some have to work, some have
children to raise. It always seems like you are running here and there,
often much too fast, often never noticing the truly grand things in life.

Look down at me now, while you sit there at your computer. See the way my
dark brown eyes look at yours? They are slightly cloudy now. That comes with
age. The gray hairs are beginning to ring my soft muzzle.

You smile at me; I see love in your eyes. What do you see in mine? Do you
see a spirit? A soul inside, who loves you as no other could in the world? A
spirit that would forgive all trespasses of prior wrong doing, for just a
    simple moment of your time?

That is all I ask. To slow down, if even for a few minutes, to be with me.

So many times you have been saddened by the words you read on that screen,
of other of my kind, passing. Sometimes we die young and oh so quickly,
sometimes so suddenly it wrenches your heart out of your throat. Sometimes,
we age so slowly before your eyes that you may not even seem to know until
the very end, when we look at you with grizzled muzzles and cataract clouded
eyes. Still the love is always there, even when we must take that long
sleep, to run free in a distant land.

I may not be here tomorrow; I may not be here next week. Someday you will
shed the water from your eyes, that humans have when deep grief fills their
souls, and you will be angry at yourself that you did not have just "One
more day" with me. Because I love you so, your sorrow touches my spirit and
grieves me. We have NOW, together.

So come, sit down here next to me on the floor, and look deep into my eyes.
What do you see? If you look hard and deep enough we will talk, you and I,
heart to heart. Come to me not as "alpha" or as "trainer" or even "Mom or
Dad," come to me as a living soul and stroke my fur and let us look deep
    into another's eyes, and talk.

I may tell you something about the fun of chasing a tennis ball, or I may
tell you something profound about myself, or even life in general. You
decided to have me in your life because you wanted a soul to share such
    things with.

Someone very different from you, and here I am.

I am a dog, but I am alive. I feel emotion, I feel physical senses, and I
can revel in the differences of our spirits and souls. I do not think of you
as a "Dog on two feet"- I know what you are. You are human, in all of your
quirkiness, and I love you still.

Now, come sit with me on the floor. Enter my world, and let time slow down
if only for 15 minutes. Look deep into my eyes, and whisper to my ears.

Speak with your heart, with your joy and I will know your true self.

We may not have tomorrow, and life is oh so very short.
