    Anal glands?

Do dogs express them, like.....if they are REALLY spooked?

Kenya typically sleeps in her crate in the evening after she's eating (the door stays propped open).  She was in there for a while when all the sudden I hear this terrible crashing and see the crate going across the room!  Then she broke free and ran away.  I think the door hooked on her collar when she was coming out and she freaked out.  Luckily, she has a wire crate and it's only a 36" so it's very very light.  I checked her all over, no injuries.  She seemed to recover pretty quickly (emotionally).  I gave her some food in her crate and she went back in to eat it.  Coke was sniffing all over the floor and I noticed it smelled a little bad.  I thought she peed, but upon closer inspection I found two areas of what look like blood spatter, but dark brown.  I cleaned up all the areas Coke was sniffing.  It was just tiny spatters of liquid, not real poop.  Is that from the anal sacs?  One of my cats does the same sort of thing if you try to hold her down, except the cat funk smells a LOT worse!!

Yes, but most people describe it as a very bad smell.

A while back one member posted that her husband wanted to see whether their dog would defend the wife at night.  He entered their dark bedroom when the wife and dog were on the bed.  The husband yelled and the dog jumped up growling.

The wife wound up with anal gland secretions all over her face, clothes, and bed linens.  She took a shower while the husband cleaned up the mess.

Sick!  I'm pretty sure Kenya would do that if Phil charged her.

Yes, it smelled bad, definitely worse than pee, but compared to my cat doing it, it didn't smell nearly as bad (but Kenya's poop doesn't smell half as bad as the cat poop either).

This is interesting.  I didn't realize that when skunks sprayed they are expressing their anal glands.

    Anal Glands

All predators, whether they are canines or felines in the wild or skunks in your backyard, have anal glands. They just use them differently. Skunks discharge the secretion from these glands as a form of defense, while dogs use it primarily for territorial marking or as a form of communication.
