Try putting a bit of flour on the cut.

Mouths and anything on the head will bleed a LOT so try not to let it scare you.

Lips bleed a LOT. Pretty much anywhere on the head/face will. If it was Pirate I'd clean it with a little peroxide and put a little pressure on it with a clean bandage.

I'm pretty sure that peroxide destroys tissue.  And pressure is a good idea, but I'm not sure if the dog will be amenable to that.  I've used flour and it's better than a steptic pencil in my book...it doesn't sting at all.

    Re: cut on lip?

I know peroxide isn't good to use over and over, but I figured since the OP didn't know what she cut her mouth on it would be good to clean the germs off.

Hahaha, some of us hold you in high regard. It's all that experience and knowledge you have :)

I honestly don't know if one time would be safe or not.  If I'm gonna err, I try to err on the side of caution.....

And, thank you for NOT pointing out the advanced age.....Geeked

I only HOPE that the experience can keep up with those numbers!  I hope that the OP was able to get the bleeding stopped.  Any head injury can be so darned scarey with all the blood!

Oy, I know! We had a scuffle at DDC once, where one dog managed to slice the tip off of the other's ear (the other dog was a husky). You'd think the place was a slaughterhouse, there was blood EVERYWHERE!!

See what marvelous influence I've had on this young woman!!!  *grin*  Age is only a number .. and when you hit a number you don't like just start counting backwards!!

Flour works great, btw ... one time of peroxide isn't a bad thing, but flour's probably easier.

    Re: cut on lip?

OK, I probably shouldn't admit this, BUT, I keep a bit of flour in the bathroom.  I have a tendency to knick my right ankle, always in the very same spot, when I shave my legs.  Bandaids don't stay on fresh from the tub, especially since I always apply warm lotion the second I step out.....and the old piece of tp trick doesn't do it for me......a smidgen of flour stop the flow fast!

    Re: cut on lip?

Peroxide is fine to use on the lip, I wouldn't use it on a puncture wound though.  We usually use peroxide to clean the face when you come in with cuts/scrapes.  Just plain soap and water would be fine too.  Don't put flour in a wound.  There is no reason to do this, it is not sterile and I've seen some terible infections from people doing this.  Once you get to me, I have to scrub this off and it doesn't feel good.  Hold pressure until the bleeding stops and then put Vit A and D ointment over it until it heals. Make sure it doesn't need suturing too.  The lip often doesn't heal nicely unless it is lined up well.
