    Not Sociable?!

    Grr...

I was walking Harley this morning when some guy rides up on his bike with his dog. I say good morning and all that and as the dogs were saying hi to each other, he corrected Harley for sniffing his dog's private area saying "its not sociable".

Uh... am I wrong? I always thought that was how dogs "meet" each other and get to know each other before playing. I know thats what happens at the dog park. Sniff sniff sniff then play!

And, he made some snide comment because Harley was wearing a jacket. Its pretty chilly in the morning, and I tried to explain that Harley had one coat (no undercoat) and he is like - so does my dog (he has a Mastiff) - and I'm like... okay, well my dog gets cold and shivers.

    Whatever!

    He corrected your dog?? Angry

No, you're not wrong. Sniffing butts is what IS sociable for dogs. It's like humans shaking hands or saying hi. Anyone who judges this perfectly and normal behavior as "not sociable" has some hang ups.

And making fun of the coat? This guy sounds like a real charmer. Confused  I think I'd avoid him in the future... Smile

Boy, that guy sounds really cool. And smart. I'd do whatever you can to impress him. Ick!

Seriously, when Rupert meets another dog, I let them sniff each other. I only correct Rupert if he gets too nosy, and the other dog looks annoyed. People also look at me weird if I have a sweater or coat on Rupert. The poor guy has a nakey belly & chest!

Geez.  Max has a chilly day sweater and we don't have anywhere near the kind of winters some of  you guys do - and I have honestly never met a dog that didn't do the butt sniff thing.

Some dogs won't tolerate their behinds being sniffed. But that's the owners problem, not yours. It is sociable in doggy world.

    Re: Not Sociable?!

I think the dude's not sociable.  The way I was brought up was to be polite & if you can't say anything nice, shut-up!  I'd say that guy making a comment on Harley's sweater was in the category when he should have shut up.  I bet Harley looked aDORable.

If he doesn't want other dogs sniffing his dogs, fine, but he could say it in a nice way.  Why would he approach you and then correct you/Harley?  There's some dogs that I don't want to approach Kenya, so I make it my responsibility to move out of the way or tell the owner my dog is nervous of their dog.

thats how Mattie is. she will bite another dog before sniffing or allowing them to sniff.... but she isnt MY dog... i probably would have (in a nicer way!!) not allowed another dog to sniff Mattie because of her little 'tude... even dogs Mattie has grown up around she snaps at... even other Chihuahuas... maybe he had a bad situation once and has decided its not worth the trouble to allow sniffing. it isnt like they will be cohabitating in the near future.. but i agree. he could have used some manners or at LEAST explained his stance on it.

aaaaaand.... my big ole bad bulldogs wear jackets... its so pathetic to see them shiver!!! and its even worse when their teeth chatter!!

But you live in Florida!  bwahaha...

Kenya has no jackets, but she's a double-coated breed designed for all-weather, all-terrain.  I just ordered her a simple vest which has reflective strips, now that it's getting dark at 4:30.  I may look into dog boots, only b/c of salt.  We live in the city and walk on roads and sidewalks.  I know the salt can damage pads.  Kenya does wear a life jacket, which everyone laughs at.  However, she comes in the boat with me and the life jacket is secure enough to lift her with the handle.  I don't want to have to jump in after her if she falls out in the middle of the lake!

    Re: Not Sociable?!

i dont care where you live... 30 degrees is 30 degrees!!! lol my husband will make comments like "They're dogs! they have their own coats! they arent cold!!" which is when i say... "ok FINE... you march out into 40 degrees with wind chill factor and heavy humidity in your under pants, socks and a t-shirt and lets see if you dont shiver after five minutes!"

which is basically what a bulldog coat amounts to... under wear lol

    Re: Not Sociable?!

Thank you guys! Now I feel like my anger was justified!

See I would understand if his dog didnt like being sniffed... but he didnt mind and was sniffing Harley too!

I pointed that out and I think thats why he attacked Harley's sweater (she has "hair" and a shaved belly from her spay... so yeah I can bet she was freezing).

I prob wouldnt have minded as much if he didnt act like he knew what the heck he was talking about and if he didnt correct my dog (he did it CMilan style with that sound and he went to do the finger pushing thing - I pulled Harley back at the same time before he could really touch her) - if anything LET ME correct MY dog.

    Re: Not Sociable?!

sounds like he got all his learning from the tv set Confused and thats probably his first dog....

little does he understand that with a dominant breed like his a simple correction like that is enough to start a fight between dogs.. if my mom's collie saw you scolding one of the other dogs she would also try to get in on the action... and if Kaydee saw you trying to correct another dog, or shoo an animal out of the yard, or even if you were trying to catch an animal.. well..... it was dangerous to say the least. dominant minded dogs like to "help".. which is a pack mentality.. "Lets get'em!!! Rrawrrr!"

    Re: Not Sociable?!

You know, it really depends. I'll redirect- forciably, if need be- a larger dog from sniffing Indy if I see Indy is getting tense- and he does NOT give obvious signals- his ears go up, his tail goes up, and he tenses- but if you're not used to his body language or you're not watching him closely, you may not eralize he's being stressed out by it- and he will turn and snap 'without warning' (he warns, it's just subtle). So generally, I'll step in and intervene- I'd rather someone think that I'm rude, rather than that my dog is vicious!

Pretty much the ONLY time I have to do this is when we run into loose dogs on walks- if Indy is off-leash and the larger dog is off-leash, he's fine, and if both dogs are onleash, I just stay out of range with Indy. He's fine if he's got space to get away, but onleash when he feels threatened? He'll give a warning snap and snarl. It's measured, it's controlled, and he won't carry it further and hurt another dog, but it could easily start a fight if the other dog got offended- and even if they don't, PEOPLE get all "OMG YOUR DOG IS VICIOUS" and frankly, I'd just like to prevent that. But some people just don't think anything of letting their dog rush right up to other dogs- who may or may not be friendly!
