Re: Hawks, birds of prey, and HELP!

One of my cats (Hannah) who was a stray at the time ended up on my deck one cold afternoon a few years ago with puncture wounds on both sides of her spine. A couple were infected and needed drains put in.   We think a hawk tried to take her.  The wounds seemed indicative of something getting her from above.  She has scars today from it.  Poor thing!

I see hawks sitting on my pasture fence looking for prey occasionally.

Yes, we have problems with Hawks here too, in fact, my sister's neighbor's yorkie was attacked and killed by one.  I have a little Maltese too, and never let her out long (just to do her business) and am either at the door or outside with her.  I'm afraid they'll think she's a bunny.  But, I'm not sure if an owl will work with a Hawk since they are both birds of prey...I could be wrong.  What are your gun laws there?  Can you own a BB gun?  My husband will grab his BB gun (since the others would make way too much noise and 'cause attention) and will shoot at stuff in the yard.  Usually the smaller birds, and squirrels who think my house is their house!  You may want to search the internet too and see what you can find about keeping Hawks etc. away...see if they have any solutions without having to kill them.  I had read fox urine (which can be bought over the internet, not sure if at any local type stores) scares away squirrels, deer, etc.  Maybe there's something like that for the birds of prey.  Good Luck, and don't forget, to always keep an eye out for your little ones in the yard.

Re: Hawks, birds of prey, and HELP!

This information is exactly what I am looking for. A hawk landed on our fence yesterday and my Chibi girl (small 10lb dog) was sitting in the courtyard. The fence is only 6ft. When the hawk proceeded to fly away Chibi took off after it. I called her back, but now I am scared to let her out. She is young and will attack most anything. It's all play to her, but she can show her ugly side. Does anyone know if the shiny object will deter the hawk for sure? We live in a subdivision so I was surprised to see a hawk on my fence. I assume she has been watching my Chibi girl. Any advise here?

The only thing that is for sure is a kennel. Hawks are a protected species so the only sure option to keep it from attacking your dog, cat, child or pet rat is to protect them.

I was surprised to see someone killing the animals around the house. Hawks are everywhere, they hunt birds usually, but we have to watch our pets also. I feed wild birds. I love all of the animals being around.

We have lots of large oak tree and lots of squirrels. You just make sure they cannot get into your attic by making sure there are no holes etc.

Thank you for your response FourIsCompany. By kennel I assume you mean a wire type crate. (?) This is a sudden thought, but does this seem like it will help. Chibi girl likes to lie in the sun real close to a boulder in our courtyard. Perhaps if I made a comfortable bed in a wire crate this would allow her some freedom to enjoy the sun while I am nearby. At this point, I find myself staying within close proximity.

    FourIsCompany:

I doubt your 12 lb dog has too much to be concerned about. He was probably waiting for the big dog to go away.

But you're right to stay outside with them and if you see any hawks, shoo them away. You can also get the bird models with the propeller wings.

I disagree with this one!!  I watched a hawk scoop up one of our Muscovy ducks right in front of our eyes and he had to weight well over 15 pounds!!  He had no problems with it and carried him away in full flight!!

I watch my pug all the time just for that reason and at night, we have foxes and other critters that would love a poke at my little girl.  Beware of the Hawks!!

Re: Hawks, birds of prey, and HELP!

Hi!  Your dog Niki looks like my rat terrier Sweetie.  I have seen Hawks in my yard sitting on the fence.  I live in Plainfield IL.  Everyone insists that Hawks wouldn't attack my dog that it is too big.

One morning I heard barking, looked outside a Hawk was swooping over my dog while she was running in the yard.  I almost had a heart attack. I ran outside and started running toward my dog, yelling at the bird, luckily it flew away.  I think I have the same type of dog you have, though she may weigh a bit more (15lb?) .Every once and awhile the hawk comes back a perches on the fence.  My husbandsays it is probbably just looking for a rabbit, which we have plenty in the area.  I think it is looking for my dog. I will pass this info to my husband who says I am paranoid and worry too much!  I believe if a hawk has the chance and it is hungry why not take the opportunity!

Though I am not sure how one would defeat them, birds of prey can and will take prey up to and exceeding their own body weight.  I've seen video footage of eagles taking 25lb sloths, 30 lb gazelles and other mid to small large sized mammals.  Do not think that your dogs are completely safe.

Re: Hawks, birds of prey, and HELP!

if golden eagles can kill wolves/coyotes/deer then a twelve pound dog is nothing to some types of hawks. i was talking to a salesman once (he was admiring my dogs thinking they were American Bullies, and he happens to own one) he told me the sad story about his first American Bully pup... the poor thing had no end of bad luck. when he first got him he fell down the stairs and broke some bones, got attacked by a hawk once (swooped down and clawed him) while out on a walk. had to get patched up from that..... Then... While on the mend he was out in the backyard while his owner was watching him from the house talking to his wife on the phone. another hawk swooped down, picked the pup up, carried him about twenty feet before dropping him. that fall ended the bad luck pup's life sadly...
The guy got another pup later on, he's grown now, but through the whole puppy stage this guy would NOT put his dog down outside unless it was to do business... and he would stand over him the whole time. once the puppy finished he would pick him up and carry him back inside... imagine a giant 6'6" tough guy carrying his pit bull puppy all over the place like Paris Hilton carries her chihuahua!! the dog now weighs about 80lbs... but i can imagine the stress his owner went through just trying to make sure he made it to the 30lb mark!!

thankfully i've never had a problem with hawks.... and we have some "big'uns" out here!! and the other day i thought i saw a bald eagle... it was too far away by the time i got my binoculars, but i swear the head and tail were white!

Safest bet is to just be on top of your dog when out and about. or keep your eyes peeled for signs of birds. thats how prey animals do it! and they have been dealing with hawks, eagles, and owls a lot longer than we humans have.
