I won TWO shock collars on eBay - which to keep?

    1 - Petsafe PDLDT-305 Deluxe

    2 - Sportdog SportTrainer 105S

So I went on eBay and noticed all the demand for remote controlled shock collars.  I happened to see the Sportdog was about to end with no bids and I got that for a decent price.  But prior to that I had bid on the Petsafe collar with a max bid of $50 so I was positive I would be outbid because these things were all going for around $85. Naturally, when you don't want to win on eBay, you do, and I did. I won the Petsafe collar for pretty much half of what it sells for, $46.  Both of these collars are very similar featurewise but since I have to now buy them both, I was curious to see if anyone has used either of these so I can try and determine which one to keep before opening them..

Since I can't imagine having to resort to batteries to train a dog, I have no idea which one you should keep.  I would have spent my money on a couple of clickers and some roast beef.

My sister has used the Sportdog SportTrainer with great success. I use the DT H2O System. From your pictures, it looks like you do a good bit of hiking with your dogs. I trail ride my mule and "Z" comes along. She is not yet a year old and is really catching onto the rules of the trail. She will be a great trail dog one day. Good luck with your decision. I know your delima. This is my second collar. The first one was an Innotek and I was not able to control "Z" and the hound in her from horseback when it was critical that she obey, so we went with a stubborn dog collar, the H2O. I use my collar as an extension of me, so that I can  reach out and touch, and when it could mean life or death such as a highway crossing, I am glad that she is collar trained.

I have The Little Dog Trainer by Petsafe ( I think)  It cost me $120.00  but it was the best money ever spent.  It is like having a totally trained dog. It has a negitive tone and a static shock with levels from 1-10  .  My cocker is 16 weeks old and weighs 10 lbs.  I have only used the shock once, ( she wouldn't stop eating rocks) She has never done it again. All I use is the tone and she is so trained now I just have to pick up the remote. By the way When I do use it , I only had it set on level 4.

Batteries I keep on hand ( just incase)  The collar takes 2-  3volt batteries # 2032 which cost me $1.50 each and last 2months.  Well worth it. This collar also gives you controll over what part of the house you want to confine your puppy to. If she tries to go beyond where I allow her I hit the tone button. If she goes to the garbage can I hit the tone button.  No gates needed, no yelling needed. I highly reccommed itBig Smile

I have a bull-whip that cost me $25 at a stand by the side of the road.  Now even the cows practice their sit-stays when I'm around.Wink

Pure lies. A good bull whip costs way more than $25.

Blondee, all jokes aside 16 weeks is extremely too young to use a shock collar on. You could be reported for dog abuse and if you were in my town and  knew what you were doing I'd do it myself. I'm not trying to be rude nor am I some crazy person, I have a pit bull and know how stubborn dogs can be but what are you thinking? What could your dog POSSIBLY be doing at 16 weeks that you need to use a shock collar?

I am not against proper use of e-collars. That said, I cringe when I hear people who are not experienced trainers talking about buying one at the store and using it on their dogs with no guidence at all. The potential for misuse in such cases is very high and the dog is the one who pays for it. I have seen some dogs which were basically "ruined" or at the very least quite tramatized by their owners guessing wrong on how to use an e-collar. For a 16 week old puppy the sort of training you are talking about doesn't sound appropriate at all. Besides using the threat of being zapped instead of proper supervision what other kind of training are you doing with your puppy? Puppy class? Socialization? Teaching commands? Puppies should start off training in a fun, positive way and really they learn sooooo fast when they are babies with proper training methods. And socialization needs to be a top priority with them - puppies need to get out and meet as many new people as possible and be exposed to a wide variety of situations.

Interesting article about the Dogtra. I have known people who use these and most have never had to put them up past 10 (often at a 5 or 6) on their dogs, quite a bit lower than this woman was talking about. My dogs wear bark collars to keep peace with the neighbors and I have accidently zapped myself with them while testing them. To me it felt like a static shock, wasn't pleasant, wasn't really painful but sure did surprised me.

Before you use a shock collar on your dog, which I don't advocate, please take the time to read this information: http://www.hollysden.com/say-no-to-shock-collars.htm

    Admin speaking...

May I remind all who are reading/posting to this thread that the OP is several months old and the thread had, in effect, died out.  I would be surprised if the original issue.....is still an issue....regardless of whether or not the thread starter still lurks/posts here.

If one has an opinion to share, far better to start a new thread to do so, than to drag up an old one.  Keeps things current, prevents irrelevant debate of old problems.

    Thanks all.
