    Cone head

My dog just had surgery on Monday to remove a funny growth on her leg (thankfully just a growth and not cancer).  She pulled out her stitches on Tuesday during the time span that it took me to go to petco to get an e-collar and come back.  So now she has a couple of staples and a full-time e-collar.  I feel so bad for her.  She looks like a little satellite dish and keeps following me around staring at me.  It's like the cone concentrates the guilt inducing qualities of her stare.  She'll have to wear it for the next 10-14 days it looks like, and I feel so bad about it.

I feel so sorry for them, too. The last time, we got a see-thru one last time and that was much better, but he still banged into things.
They ask so little and give so much!

She has the see through one too.  I even take it off for a bit in the evenings and windex it to make sure it stays clean.

I've never figured out how to find or post links Embarrassed but I'm pretty sure that dvet once posted pics and instructions on how to make a collar from a folded towel.  It kept the dog from biting/scratching where he shouldn't but gave him more freedom of movement and allowed him to see better. Maybe someone who remembers that will find it and post it for you.

This is what I got for Jamison after he was nuetered.  He didn't do very well in the regular e-collar because he's a hound and he NEEDS to sniff.  This worked out very well for us.

    Re: Cone head

She's getting used to it for the most part.  I like the towel and pro-collar ideas, but I need something that I can feel confident she won't get off while I'm at work.  I already took 3 days off to monitor, but it's unfeasible that I would be able to do that for 2 weeks.  I left her alone yesterday with the e-collar for two test periods (1.5 hours and 2.5 hours) and it was still on when I got home.  I'm also spraying the wound with a non-stinging water-based deterrent.  I feel bad about the collar, but honestly, I would feel worse if she took those stitches out again.  I try to take it off for a little while in the evenings when I'm home to watch her like a hawk.  She eats and drinks will in the collar, but her bone chewing is somewhat hindered.  So I hold the bone for her while she chews.

I WANT TO SEE THE TOWEL IDEA!!!!! Teddi can not turn around in her crate with a lampshade/satellite dish on. I am worried that she will seriously injure her leg forcing the turn. So I took that off. We bought the pro collar and it does seem to make her less aware of her back end BUT she can get to it I have seen her with it on. And our pro collar sprung a leak so we can't keep it inflated. My DH plans to return it today we bought it last Saturday. Teddi is being very good, and I am actually hoping her bandage and sutures come out tomorrow, but as the insicion continues to heal I worry about her licking it too much. So I want to be prepared. I may not need it but... Where Teddi had her IV she really licked that spot. It was getting very red and irritated, I then remembered that I had some vet wrap from my horses and I bandaged it and she has left that alone since. Not even picked at the bandage good girl.

I had to close her crate because she just can't get in there anymore.  At least she has her other "den".

    Re: Cone head

Swamper, I'm glad it turned out be something not too serious; it's so scary when our animal companions get sick! I just went through the cone-head period with Riley when he was neutered and had the tiny hernia he was born with fixed. Boy, he was not happy about wearing that cone! (even though he looked cute!) I was able to take it off when I was with him, as long as he didn't start licking or biting at his incisions - and he was such a good boy that he never tried it once (I had special toys and treats ready just in case he tired to, so I could distract him). But the last day he had the cone on, he somehow got the bottom part of the circle around his neck in his mouth...even making the cone a bit tighter didn't stop him from being able to do this. Luckily, he didn't start that until Thursday and it was supposed to come off Friday...so after he did it for the third time, he got the cone off a bit early, but thankfully he didn't also pick that time to start doing something to his incisions ;)

If you're able to take the cone off while you're supervising you dog at night, s e may be able to tolerate it a little more during the day. It might be worth a try. Best of luck and I hope she's all better soon!

Thanks for the links! It is worth the try if I need it. I certainly hope not! Actually Teddi is cute with her inflatable on, she has a built in pillow when she lays down!

    Re: Cone head

There are several more comfortable alternatives to the standard Elizabethan-style collar:

    http://www.dog.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=220104+003   (Bite Not Collar)
    http://revivalanimal.com/product.asp?pn=39-136&ss=bite%20free
    (EJay Bite Free Collar)

       (Neck's Best Thing)

       (Soft-E-Collar)

A search with the following would have found these:

                          Elizabethan AND collar

    Re: Cone head

Actually the inflatible pillow worked very well for me with a few modifications.  When it did get punctured, I filled it with one of those neck pillows.  I used a sweater sleeve to keep the collar low on the neck.
