Dakota was just in a dog fight and is still bleeding (jewlieee)

Dakota was at the dog park and got in to a fight with another dog. It was a pretty nasty fight (I was surprised) but the details aren't important. At the time, I saw blood on her fur on her neck and her mouth was bloody. The other dog didn't have any wounds or blood that we could see. Because her fur is so thick I could not find a wound on her and figured the blood on her fur and in her mouth was from biting her tongue or something.

Now, an hour later I noticed more blood in the same spot on her fur, so I cleaned it up and came away with a bloody cloth. I can barely see a puncture wound under all that fur but it's definitely there and is still bleeding. It's not bleeding so bad that she needs to go to emergency imo and I will take her in first thing in the morning. Is there anything in the mean time that I should put on it? I am putting pressure on it with a cloth and the vet is being paged right now to call me back.....thoughts would be appreciated.

    Poor Dakota!!

Usually a glob of neosporin stops my shaving cuts from bleeding...but IDK if you'd want it to gunk up her fur and attract dirt.

Poor lady Dakota! :( I hope she feels better!

Cold can help stop bleeding -- I would probably cut some of the fur away if you can.  Just so you can see it better to clean it.  Even just mild soap and water will clean it well.  Peroxide for JUST tonight if you have nothing better.  Betadyne is a super good scrub if you've got it.

I don't have anything, not even neosporin (sp). I'm going to run to the drug store. It's going to be tough cutting her fur. She hates grooming....

Well she was surprisingly good for her impromptu hair cut! She sat nicely while I chopped away (dang, that undercoat is thick!). The vet called and said not to clean it tonight so that I didn't aggrevate any healing that had started. They will shave her and look for other wounds and clean this one tomorrow.

In the mean time, I put neosporin on along with a no-stick wrap around her neck to keep the pressure on so that it stops bleeding. I just hope she won't need to be sewn up. She's so old, I hate to sedate her in any way.

Poor baby, I hope she's not hurting too much.  Good luck.

Clean the area with soap and water well, don't put anything over it like neosporin or clean it with anything wierd. Neosporin is generally not used in puncture wound as it is petroleum based abd cab create a nice breeding ground for some bacteria it doesn't cover as the wound can seal quickly over it. Hold pressure to the area, and I mean pretty hard, don't just place a cloth over it with tape. Pressure dressings aren't generally a good idea on the neck for obvious reasons. If it doesn't stop with direct pressure after about 20 minutes you should go to the vet, or if the bleeding is pulsatile which it does not sound like it is. Cold actually makes you coagulopathic and you will bleed more, it has been used historically acutely to try to vasoconstrict, but the coagulopathy outweighs any benefit from minor vasoconstriction so I would not do that (it's actually a JAHCO thing now that patients in the OR have to be kept a certain temperature so this doesn't happen when they get too cold, it's that big of a problem). Remember the old surgical law.....All bleeding will stop eventually ;) The longer you wait to sew things up the more likely it will get infected so keep that in mind.

Wow, what a great post.  I love doctors with all their science!  YAY!

Jewliee, how's Dakota?  Did you get her to the vet yet?  Update us as soon as possible please!

I just got back from the vet. They shaved her so that we could see the wound. That was a pretty good bite she got! The vet put her on antibiotics and told me to keep it clean and put hot packs on it to stimulation circulation and healing.

The vet checked her out otherwise and there were no other wounds that we could see. She does have a swollen lymph node in her right rear leg though. We aren't sure what that is about.

I also had Neiko checked out because he's had runny poop and threw up last night. He's fine though. The vet thinks that maybe he just got in to something at the dog park. She also commented on how big his muscles were and what great shape he was in. That made me feel like a proud mama :) He does have pretty good rear muscles from all of the running he does.

Poor Dakota! I just saw your thread. Sending healing vibes from the triplets (Rosco, Lexi and Luna)

It's just a better life with dogs.

Glad to hear it's ok! Is the lymph node tender or is it just a hard mass?
