    Scared of stairs

I had my father come visit a few weeks ago, and he built some stairs off our back porch, down to the ground. We thought this would be lovely in the winter to be able to take Zoey out for a pee, instead of going out the front door.

problem is, Zoey is petrified of the stairs!!! lol i'm not sure why, but i have a few ideas.

idea 1:  whens he was younger, i took her out back on a retractable leash (which i finally threw in the garbage, piece of junk) and she ran around 2 empty garbage cans and when she came back to me it knocked them both over, almost on top of her. scared the bajeebees outta her! even now when they're out at the curb she watches them closely, like they're ready to attack her again. She knows where we keep them, and is weary when we get close to that area- which is under the back deck.

idea 2: she's never been great with stairs. we had to show her how to go up/down stairs when she was little, which was expected. she did great! but it's weird... she never goes into our basement, and won't even put one paw on the first step down. our cats are down there, and she's definately tried chasing them, but that's their escape, kuz they know she won't go. she's not afraid of the basement stairs i don't think... we just love the idea that there's a place for the cats to run and escape her (AND the litter box is down there, so it eliminates the problem of keeping nosey Zoey outta their box!)

idea 3: the stairs are "open" (hard to explain) ... if you're standing at the bottom, looking up at them, you can see thru them.

i asked my father "dad, how do you get a dog to go up and down stairs?"

my father used to train police dogs wayyyy back in the day, and his response was that you just drag them up and down a few times till they realize it's ok Tongue Tied  ... i love my dad (but i know he'll never read this lol) that was not the idea i was looking for hahaha... i'm hoping for a much friendlier way to get Zoey ok with going up and down stairs. any idea???

also, is it easier to teach up first? or down first??

we've tried holding her legs and "walking" her up the stairs, but it's like i'm moving a Barbie doll lol. she's stiff as a board, and it's not until she's at the laaaast step that she hops up and runs off.

    any ideas?

    Re: Scared of stairs

Have you done any clicker training with her?  This is a perfect exercise for clicker training.  Also, give her a reason to want to go down.  Is there something she is absolutely crazy about?  Most JRTs have something.  Use that as the motivation, don't try to rush it.  Only let her have it during this exercise, no other time!  Reward for every little movement forward.  Ex-at first if she acts like she is going to try to step down, reward, every little step (no pun intended).  You said she did it when she was young, she will do it again if she has a reason to and you take your time with her.  Best of luck!

    Excellent advice, Dawn!

Take your time. You can also pick her up, place her on the stair and make a big deal, treat and let her know how wonderful she is.

    Re: Scared of stairs

It literally is as easy as taking it one step at a time.

Start out with the pup just 1 or 2 steps from the bottom and coax encourage the dog to go down those remaining steps.  Big praises treats whatever when the dog accomplishes that.  Continue until the dog is comfortable with just the couple then move up a step or 2 and repeat.  Continue until the dog will do all the stairs.  Do the same for going up, start a couple from the top and repeat exercise.

Remember this is scary to the dog so keep everything upbeat and positive and make a big deal when they accomplish any part of the task.

I have used this routine to train puppies just big enough to not fit between the steps and it works great.  They get the idea in no time.

you just had to go there didn't you lol...

thanks for the ideas guys! we just came in from doing some clicker training outside actually! but i dunno if there's anything that she's be willing to go down the stairs for- she's really petrified of them!! we've (I've) just started learning to clicker train... and i'm not even sure if i'm doing it right (hahaha) but i'm trying!! :) she seems to enjoy our training sessions kuz she knows there's gonna be lots of treats goin on in the next little while.

i think today we've done enuf work, but tomorrow we'll try all these fun things on the stairs... :)

Check out this site and do some reading. It will really help with clicker training. Smile

    Dog Afraid of Stairs?

To disguise the steps, she draped a blanket over all of the steps of the staircase. "With a little encouragement, Bubba stepped on the blanket rather gingerly but made his way right up," recalls Liz. This visual trick worked.

She needed to use the blanket only three or four times before he was willing to climb the stairs without it. Stepping down the stairs came more gradually, but he learned.

    Re: Scared of stairs

JRT, dogs don't have great depth perception, so they're not thrilled with stairs, especially going down them...though depending on the dog and sometimes the breed, some are better with it than others. Also, dogs don't see as we do, so when something is motionless it can be almost invisible to a dog. I have stairs for my puppy to get on the couch; he wasn't thrilled about them either...but by using treats and coaxing him, then lavishing him with praise when he did it, I got him to start using them in less than 10 minutes. Since yours are larger stairs outside, try going up the stairs with him, using a treat, and praising him each time he goes up a step. He may balk a bit when you want him to try walking down them (that good old depth perception again!) but if you're holding something really good in front of his nose (chicken can work wonders), he'll eventually walk down...do it a number of times and eventually he won't think twice about taking the stairs.

    Re: Scared of stairs

Though from the way it sounds I agree it is probably fear, but have you ruled out "injury"? The reason I ask is my pup Teddi was terrified to jump in a car. She loved going for car rides but when we asked her to jump in she would take off frantically running in circles. We woudl catch her pick her up and put her in the car. We tried feeding her in the car, treats, clicker all that stuff nothing worked. Then she was diagnosed with hip dysplasia, made perfect sense why she didn't want to get in. Once we stopped asking her to jump in, she sit there and wait for assistance to get in. I am not saying your dog has dysplasia, but I just want to rule out there may be a pain issue to be checked into.
