    Any Singers or Musicians Here?

I have always loved music. I played guitar for many years. I wrote this song. What do you think? OK, I know if you think it sucks, you won't respond (at least I hope not!) But I wrote this song while my husband was working in another state... and a friend of mine mixed it and I think sounds pretty good.

Sweet Touch (It's an odd type of music - Echo-y and electronic)

Original Blues Version (I played this on the keyboard. No mixing... Just regular old blues) LOL

Any other novice singers/musicians out there? Any recordings for us to listen to?

Re: Any Singers or Musicians Here?

wow, thats you!? you're very good!! though you dont need me tellin you that i'm sure!

the only critique i might have would be with the blues version which is the background instruments. sounds like a midi.. but that could be my speakers... its late and they are turned down really really low so i wont wake everyone lol

my husband loves to sing too and is pretty good at it if he doesnt try too hard. his voice is a bit like Gary Allen's(Allan?) but he an also manipulate it to sound like any other male singer lol. Also his dad was in a band when he was younger. the whole family is very musically inclined, even my MIL and the grandkids.. my nephew can hear a song and play it by ear.. But so can my uncle and my brother - who were also in bands - my uncle likes to write his own songs and music...only one of which i think he wrote is something like "Just moved in to my house todaaayy.. Dog pooped on the floor so i gotta move awaaaaay" (that apparently was inspired by having too animals and not enough people willing to clean up after them) my grandmother was disappointed in her only son.. she wanted him to go to Nasheville with his band and become famous but instead he got married and had kids and just became a blue collar worker.
i dont know about my husband's or my dad's family history, but we've had musicians on my mom's side dating back to before the civil war - we still have the violin from great great great (great?) grandad.. not sure how many greats are supposed to be in there. but yes the fiddle is 1860's era and hasnt been played since then sadly.

as for myself... i have no intention to sing when anyone is listening. i'm weird like that i guess... my sisters and i used to sing all the time together but for some reason i got self conscious about it. the only time i sing is if i KNOW no one is listening.. like in the car... but my husband SWEARS he heard me singing in the shower once and that i sounded good.. but i can swear on a stack of Bibles that i have never once, not even for a second EVER sung in the shower!! i might whistle.... but i dont sing.

My husband, Jon, is in a band and he's always been a gifted musician/singer. He taught himself to play the piano and just sits down and plays like Mozart. It's not music that he composes ahead of time; he just sits down and plays it. He also plays the trumpet and in his band he's the lead singer and plays rhythm guitar.

If you want to check out Jon's band you can visit their myspace at myspace.com/atthestarsrock. They have a website that's under construction- www.atthestars.net. His music is similar to Radiohead and Coldplay.

I love music!  I can play the flute and piccolo, and I do classical vocal.  I performed at the University of Toronto together with the Royal Conservatory of Music about 3 years ago or so, the entire Carmina Burana the 25 movements.  I sing high soprano :D

    Thanks everyone!

Most people prefer that one. But I like the other one. It's so professional-sounding.

It is just a keyboard, so it's not real instruments. And it's one of the first ones I did, so it sounds pretty hokey! LOL But thanks. Another friend recorded my voice while he played real instruments and it sounds better.

Your story is very interesting! My family is the same way. My sister and parents and I used to sing in church. We were a church group. At 3-4 years old, I used to sit on the piano bench of our church pianist (Ralph) and just LOVE to hang out there! I loved being immersed in the music!

    They sound great! Thank you!

This is my nephew's band. They're REALLY good! They're not entirely dissimilar to your hubby's. From the site:

Fans of intelligent and emotional melodic pop like The Beatles, Coldplay, and Elliott Smith will undoubtedly find this gem to be their musical discovery of the year.

Wow! Very impressive! Do you have any recordings that we can hear?

Cool! There is musical talent here!  Making music just makes my heart spin! Smile

My husband sings, as do both of his sisters (they've had far more training that he has).  I can upload a song later if you want.

I'll listed to Carla's song at home, I don't have speakers at work (b/c I "borrowed" them indefinitely for home, lol).

Re: Any Singers or Musicians Here?

Nope no instruments or singing here.

The only gift I have musically is being able to remember lyrics after hearing a song only once. I can hit every lyric in a rap tune I have not heard for 20 years most times.

My daughter cannot remember lyrics to save her life....but she can interpret music in an incredible way....she will listen to a song she has never heard before and tell you "this sounds like China, I see a dragon dancer..." and be right...or "The music sounds like someone is sneaking up on you..." or "This music sounds like a forest and sunshine" and be 100% right every time. It is creepy...she see's pictures when she hears it and is very good at expressing what she sees, so you can also see it.

My son can mimic rhythm and cadence perfectly...we played  agame since he was only 1 or so where I make a simple rhythm like "boom boom boomboom bip"...and he will say it back to me...perfectly...I cna get really complicated like 4 of this 2 of that and 1 of those and he will hitit dead on. Weird kid.

    I would love that!

Gina, that sounds like a talented family you have there. There's definitely a connection to music and rhythm with you and both of your kids. The daughter's insight is particularly interesting. It reminds me of a Simpson's episode where Lisa claims "I can see the music"...

Here are a few more of my recordings:

Final Moments (A short interpretive piece about my mother's death)

Race Rap  (Yes, I actually did a rap! It's a very serious piece about racism, attempts to discuss race and the fight for equality - and I still cry when I listen to it. Even though I'm a 50-year-old white woman) Stick out tongue

Middle of Me (About unrequited Love...)

WOW - Carla - you have a great voice!!  Very talented!!  Has anyone told you that you sound a lot like Deborah Harry aka Blondie???  She's my favorite female singer, followed closely by Annie Lennox.

Re: Any Singers or Musicians Here?

It's hard to pin down your style. I liked your blues song, which reminded me of Billy Holiday's style. I happen to have an orginal ceramic phonograph of "Lady Sings the Blues."

The rap song started out sounding like something Annie Lennox would do.

I have been playing guitar since October 1974, self-taught. I just picked up a guitar one day (grandparents' little classical guitar) and started picking the arpeggio to Credence Clearwater Revival's "Who'll Stop the Rain."

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9xFywOSskU

My mom gave me her old student folk guitar and Mel Bay's Book of Chords. And it all started there. I've taught myself to play classical in a non-standard format. I will take sheet music and transpose it to tablature form, finding the easiest way to play it. I like Corelli and Damas-Tarrega.

I've played Led Zepellin I through IV and the "Rain Song."

I've played the entire soundtrack of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and sang all the parts, and I do mean all of them. I've specifically worked on my voice since 1987 and can range from baritone into the lower end of castrati. But usually sing tenor. In so doing I've developed a volume that can make your head ache. I've seen people flinch when I do "Dream On" by Aerosmith because I hit that note with a pure tone.

I've got a 4-track recording machine for cassette but I don't have a way to record digital, though I would like to get one of those kits that just jacks into the computer.

My current practice set includes these songs.

"Long Way to the Top" - AC/DC

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1iR2Wi3u5o

"Down Under" - Men at Work

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNT7uZf7lew

    "Brandy" - Looking Glass

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR0oHQxlzGs

    "Highway to Hell" AC/DC

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erJc4dzZ3IA

"Holy Diver" - Ronnie James Dio.

     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkysjcs5vFU

    Just to name a few.

I don't have any digital recordings, so I linked the originals to give you an idea of range of material.

Jesus, ron! You just took me back to being 13 years old! LOL

Led Zeppelin II Ahhhh... LOVED that album!

    ron2:
entire soundtrack of "Jesus Christ Superstar"

OH! We need to get together and sing!  My husband's getting tired of hearing:

Don't let me stop your great self-desctruction
Die if you want to - you misguided martyr
I wash my hands of your demolition
Die if you want to - you innocent puppet!

    LOL I LOVE that one!

Do you have a mic? I use a headset mic and Audacity.  Download it and start singing! Every vocal you heard was recorded with a headset mic and Audacity.
