    Re: Naming your dog.

I can't explain it....I just want something different, usually it takes me a few days to really figure out what would be a cool name for a dog......and when it's the right one I know right away.......

    Re: Naming your dog.

Let's see, I really don't have any neat names for my dogs...

Buster - my dad and my sister named him.  It took them all of about 5 minutes to come up with Buster (and we had already previously had a rabbit named Buster with Babs, who went with Tiny Toon Adventures).  Although if I had had my way, it probably wouldn't have been too creative anyway, something like Beethoven.

Lady - I believe my SIL named her after Lady from Lady and the Tramp

Max - I think DH and his mom came up with that from the Mad Max movies???

Benny - well he just came with that name and since everyone from work already knew him as Benny, it just stuck , but I did drop the middle name...too human for me; it was Benjamin Thomas, now it's just Benny.

GeorgAnne, Buster (greyhound mix - 14 years), Lady (beagle mix? - 14 Years), Max (GSD/cattledog - 9 years), and Benny (pom - 3 years) - CGC

    Re: Naming your dog.

Button:  Well, her little black docked tail (sorry it's not too visible in my only puppy pic of her) in a sea of white looks like a toggle button on a machine to me.  And being a rat terrier, when she's zooming around the house all hyper, playing with my other one, we often say "Swithch that button OFF please!"  Plus, as a puppy, she truly was "cute as a button".  Turns out one of her ears didn't stay erect and when folded down, they are called "button ears", so it ended up being quite appropriate, quite by accident.

Zipper: This girl was a rescue we adopted at 5 mos..  She had been stray for quite some time, judging by her behaviors and somewhat aggressiveness with Button.  She would ZIP toward Button aggressively every time food was being eaten or prepared or affection was being doled out.  With Italian Greyhound in their ancestry, believe be, ratties are incredibly FAST!  My husband thought of Zipper, it had a nice sound to it and it sure did suit her. Plus, I'm a seamstress and the two just seemed to go together.  No doubt if I ever get a third ratie it will be named Velcro!  Big Smile  The two of them get along "maaahvelously" now.

Sasha came with the name, and it was a fine name so we kept it.  When we got Ivan, we wanted a name that went well with Sasha.  And he was a pain in the you-know-what, so he also became known as Ivan the Terrible.

Check out the "Little pup needs a name" thread, the members posted some awesome names.

Peanut got her name b/c it was theonly one that both DH and I could agree on.  We went down a list of names and when we got to Peanut, we both liked it.  We've been told that "she's more like a sack of peanuts."

Draico was named after the ancient Greek (first) law scribe, Draco.  Every hear of Draconian Law?   He looks like a police dog and I wanted to give him a strong name, but something not as common as Max or Rex, so Draico it was.  I added the i to his name b/c too many people were calling him dracko (drakko, short A, long O).  That bugged me, sounded like Dracula.

The cats, Tiger was named so b/c of his beautiful striped pattern.  Bonkers was named so b/c he drove us Crazy on the ride home meowing so much and loud, you'd think there was something in his box skinning him!  To this day, he's bonkers, so it fits.

     Edited to correct thread name.

    Re: Naming your dog.

I had Emma's name picked out for a year, before I got her. She's a loooong, ridiculously silly story that I don't tell to most people. When I adopted her, the name I'd had in my head, Emma Nems, fit. Emma means "all embracing", so I though it'd be nice for a puppy. When I decided to get her ILP, I wanted a flashier name. I thought I'd use two "M" words, one plural, with an "N" in the middle, MNMs. Mischief  N Miracles just describes her, perfectly.

Teenie's name came in a fit of frustrated sarcasm. I was ranting and raving about having this dog who I absolutely couldn't place, any time soon, and I called her a "Teenie Weenie". She was *huge* at the time, and came bouncing over, wagging her tail.  It stuck. She's Teenie Weenie (Houdini), to this daySmile

I like dessert names and when Gingerbread was a baby he was a darker liver color and white, similar to a gingerbread cookie. So that's where his name came from. ;)

    Re: Naming your dog.

Ares, named for the greek god of war. Morgan, because she needed a name that was part celtic and part cowgirl. Morgan, when she is in trouble is called Morrigan, who is a celtic war goddess. Tyr, named for the norse god of war. Nyx, named for the greek primordial goddess of night (she has enough fire in her to not need a war deity name LOL). other dogs i have had that i named: athena, the greek goddess of wisdom and battle. leo for the astrological leo (his mom's name was zodiac). piper for the character on charmed.

    Re: Naming your dog.

We actually went on the internet and looked up baby names.  I did hit one website, but couldn't tell you which one, where you entered your dogs personality in and it came up with a suggestion.  But we checked out the baby names and basically looked for names, and their meanings, and what sounded like a dogs name.  I wanted to name her Molly or Holly (Molly, Molly, the Border Collie, just thought that would be cute, unfortunately, I was the only one).  So we found Misty which means covered with mist, dew.  What better name for a dog who will come boating and camping with us!  What do you think?  Good name?  LOL

    Re: Naming your dog.

Mahalo - she is a shelter dog, previously named "Arrow" and she came to mahalo and my aunt recently visited Hawaii so it fit.

Buster Brown- while buster was only 8weeks old at the shelter and we could have named him Anything this fit. his original name was "brownie" because hes really rich chocolate color. we sometimes call him buster brownie.

Duncan Hienz - was duncan at the shelter and my aunt loved it. we added the Heinz part, so its "Duncan Heinz"  like the cake mix but Heinz as in 57(mutt)I personally hated it for him, but it fits quite well.

Teddie Ruxpin -  We call him Teddie. When we got him he was well over a year old and we found out his name was "Buddy Boy" (no wonder he wouldn't come to Rupert!) anyhow we hate the name buddy and he came to teddie because it rymes and it stuck.

It seems we like unique names, or try to make more normal names 'different' or 'special. I've noticed we really just want what fits, and what the dog will come to easiest for training purposes. I think up new names al the time but they don't fit every pet.
