    Re: Teaching the stand command

Here's a great thread that offers a number of ways, really clearly described, so easy to try! I tried a few and had good success with them!

    Re: Teaching the stand command

Here's a current thread, it's from a GSD forum, but I don't see why the technique would differ that much for other breeds:

We're working on this right now.  Kenya knows a heel to sit, heel to down, heel to drop (immediate down, very fast), but the heel to stand is hard!  If I give her a command that she doesn't quite know, her default behavior is to stop moving and sit.  Doing a stand from a sit is no problem, but she has to stop (from fast movement) in a stand and stay there.

If your dog can maintain a sit stay while a stranger approaches and pets them lightly on the  head and back, without breaking the stay, then you are ready to teach the stand-stay. If your dog cannot handle "sit for exam" - go no further until you have that.

That's my pearl of wisdom, (winking, it took me 2 Novice obedience dogs to figure this out.)

I'm interested in a stand/stay command as well. My handler has told me to NOT train my puppy to sit so she will be learning from a stand position.

By all means listen to your instructor, but I guess I don't understand why you aren't allowed to teach your dog to sit and stay.

The most problems I see with this exercise is the dogs move their feet, either to leave from the examiner - or into the person playing judge, for a butt scratch!

Friendly dogs and shy dogs are quickly sorted out.

In my novice class, I teach the stand for exam as performed in the AKC Novice regulations.

From a sit, the dog is lured to standing position. This luring motion becomes the command along with the verbal.

(I teach the stay using a platform in the puppy class and by Novice, the dogs know what stay means - in any position.)

The handler gives the dog the command and/or signal to stay and walks approximately 8 feet away and faces the dog.

The Judge approaches and touches the dog on the back of the neck/shoulders, back and/or croup - before stepping away and commands the handler to return to the dog.

The handler returns around the dog and moves up to heel position. The dog should not move at all during the entire exercise.

I have a video link to the moving stand for examination, and the rally stand-walk around your dog, if you'd like to see them.

    Re: Teaching the stand command

Since one of the things that I teach is conformation, I use the Happy Legs system it is wonderful!  But, since most people don't have access to one or wish to purchase one, do what I used to do years ago, before the Happy Legs.  Use cans on a table, such as tuna, start off larger like tuna and work down to tomato paste.  Put one foot at a time on the cans using bait in the dogs face the whole time.  Repeat the command stand while the dog is on the cans.  I never let my dogs get off the stilts unless I physically take them off.  This helps reinforce the fact they are not allowed to move, even when released like in a regular exercise.  I don't like them to ever feel they can remove themselves, if they step off, back up they go.  Not only is it teaching them to stand still, it is also teaching them proper positioning and stance.  They learn to "lock" their muscles in the proper position on command.  If you have a large dog, as I had, a bloodhound at the time, I built a small "table".  About 3ft by 3ft to 4ft by 4ft of plywood and used 4x4's for the legs.  They only need to be about 1ft each.  Being up off the ground helps keep the dog from stepping out of position and it is not difficult to get the dog up a foot off the ground.  These little "tables" are also great for teaching  a dog a directional send out!  If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask!

    Re: Teaching the stand command

Interesting technique, firedog.  Luckily, for rally, you can manually setup a stack, if you want, so the dog only has to stand up (or stop in a standing position) by itself and the handler is allowed to position the stand, if that's what you want.
