    Re: Glucosamine Supplements

I like human quality best for ALL supplements -- too often dog ones just aren't very good quality.

there is glucosamine and then there is chondroitin.  Some "experts" say give together.  Some say give one or the other.  In MY experience see what works for your dog (or you).  Different dogs seem to do better on different things -- I think that's why "medical opinion" varies so on that issue.

And hey -- we're all "clueless" until we've educated ourselves on something.

I have a big dog (90 lbs) and it is more economical for me to buy a liquid horse supplement and feed tiny amounts with her food. I buy Acti-Flex 4000 at the local feed store.

Ive heard that liquid aborbs better than the pills. I used to use human pills cuz they were the cheapest but now I used whatever cheapest liquid I can find. Just make sure you check the dose in each serving because there is QUITE a range!

    Re: Glucosamine Supplements

I give a liquid horse supplement as well, Nutri Aid GCM this contains Glucosamine HCL, Chondroitin Sulphate, MSM, Vitamin C, Mineral Manganese and devils claw.  My dogs are doing fantastic on this supplement, plus being liquid it's very easy to put in their meals.  Having 5 large dogs it's also more economical :)

When choosing a Glucosamine supplement it is perfectly fine to give human supplements, just make sure they either contain or you give Vitamin C  or manganese along with them.  A dogs system needs the vitamin C or manganese to help uptake the Glucosamine into their system.

I always choose a product that contains Glucosamine and Chondroitin here is a breif explanation of how they work together.

Glucosamine provides the building blocks to synthesize new cartilage. Glucosamine is the building block necessary for the production of the substances called glycosaminoglycans. The glycosaminoglycans are combined with hyaluronic acid to make the substance proteoglycans. The proteoglycans and collagen are the main structures of cartilage.

Chondroitin also is one of the products necessary for the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans. But it probably plays a more important role by combating and neutralizing destructive enzymes in the joint. There is always a low level of destructive enzymes found in the joint, but when injury or abnormal wear occurs, the destructive enzymes and agents increase accelerating cartilage destruction. When chondroitin is added to the diet it helps to reduce the level of these destructive enzymes.

I've done trial and error with a dog with dysplasia and he's responded best to Gyco Flex III which is a dog supplement. I give it to the others too as a preventative.

    Re: Glucosamine Supplements

I give my 7 year old Lab mix human pills - glucosamine only.  After trying various other products for dogs and people, this is what seems to work best.  She had started to be hesitant about doing certain things, but now she's her normal, active self again. Smile

    Re: Glucosamine Supplements

Has anyone tried one of the foods that have the glucosamine chondoroitin in it already? I seen one large breed Lamb and Rice formula, that was in the ingredients. It may be more cost effective to do it that way if it produced results. Just wondering.

We use horse supplement, we get them from SmartPak (http://www.smartpakequine.com/JointCompare.aspx).  They also have a canine section.  Just remember to adjust the quantities so your not feeding your dog at the horse levels.

    Re: Glucosamine Supplements

KayCee had her knees operated for luxating patellas at age 16 months for the first knee, 30 months for the other knee.  I have had her on joint sups since first operation.  She had been on Purina One Senior but lately I have not been able to get it around here--small town surround by small towns and the gulf--and i went with Nutro Senior til i can find the purina One again and it has the gluco, etc in it.  However I have read a number of times there isn't enough to really do much good--is like the bluebrrries, spinach, carrots, listed after the salt in an ingredient list--llooks good, but not much to it.

I don't know it thta is true ot not--about there not being enough to matter.  The lady at the feed store said the owner uses on "broken down retired greyhounds" and they respond great without any other sup.  And i don't know if i believe that or not.  I don't take chances, i still kayCee her sups every day.

    Re: Glucosamine Supplements

That's what I did as well Stacita I tried many different glucosamine supplements for my Rottweiler with HD and Newf with ED.  My Rottweiler is 8 years of age with HD diagnosed as very bad grade at two years.  I tried everything over the years and have found the Nutri Aid is working the best for her.  I also give her plenty of sardines/wild salmon steamed or canned free of salt for the omega 3's and when I do give fish body oil I make sure it's distilled and free of all the toxins that can be found in some other fish oils.  I also give her organic ginger root and turmeric as anti-inflammatories & cut out grains in her diet.  I am just so amazed at how well she is doing, she even amazes conventional vets...not my holistic vet tho as he sees food + supplements improving dogs health every day...it's normal for him, not normal for conventional vets. lol

    Re: Glucosamine Supplements

I used glucosamine/chondroitin on myself, so when the dogs needed some, I gave them my capsules.  I keep a bottle around and whenever anyone is stiff, they get a dose.  So, yes, I use human grade GC.
