What about Grapes and other bad things?

I just recently an article that told us not to give a dog grapes.  When our kids were little, we would toss our border collie cross a grape from time to time (or he would snatch up a dropped one) and he would mostly just spit them out.  What would happen if a dog ate a grape?

Regarding salmon:   When we were on a family vacation with our children, their spouses and children, our little chi puppy snatched up a piece of smoked salmon skin.  I knew there were deadly micro-organisms in salmon blood so I freaked out.  Our puppy only weighed about 1 1/2 lbs at the time.  Our daughter called her 24 hour emergency vet and I was told since the salmon was cooked or smoked the organism was destroyed and not to worry.  WOW, a person sure does get attached quickly to their doggies.

You beat me-I read that too awhile ago and didn't know why.  Now I see they can be toxic.

I just heard last week too, not to give your dogs onions.  It does something to digestive system.  I forget the details (sorry), but I used to give Tabitha onions, she's ok.  Heck, when I was a kid, my dog (cairen terrier) used to eat everything I ate, including chocolate.  He even ate the black jelly beans I used to get in my easter basket.

I didn't know about grapes, I'll be sure to check that out.  Thanks!

Now see, they didn't say all dogs.  Maybe those dogs are allergic somehow to the grapes.  Or have/had digestive problems. It doesn't state either how many dogs, if this was extreme or maybe a few cases in the area.  Unless, I missed that part.  I think sometimes they like to scare the crap out of people.  Reminds me of the anti-bacterial soap. Now there's a problem using it too much.  Our bodies would fight off most bacteria, using the soap now makes us more susceptable(?) to those bacterias our body used to fight off.

I won't give my dog grapes, though, better safe than sorry.  It just makes you wonder.

My mom's dog has had so many grapes in her lifetime, to no ill effect. I think it just depends on the dog, but you're probably better off playing the safe side. But I used to sit on the couch after school and have grapes for a snack and I'd throw them to my mom's corgi and she'd catch them in her mouth. I probably did this nearly everyday for.... 7 years. She's 11 now and still going. *shrug*

I did a bunch or research on grapes when we removed the vines from our back fence and they ended up all over the lawn.  In my search I found that they are not poisonous in all cases and they aren't sure exactly why.  It generally takes a large amount of grapes, but not in every scenario.  I exercise caution, because grapes can cause acute renal failure.

my view on it is...it probably won't do anything...but what if it did? It's not like there's a shortage of safer choices for treats....so I pick something else.

I was just clicking around my local newspaper online, and I was reading the pets section.  There was a recent article that had a forbidden food list from the ASPCA.  Grapes and chocolate and onions were there, and so were raw meat, raw eggs, and raw bones.  Sad  They are not quite on the cutting edge.

Uh oh!  Rocky has eaten sooo many grapes in his life.  It's never bothered him.  In fact, he loves them and apples too.  Now if something happens to him, I'll never be able to forgive myself.  He likes a little chocolate every now and then too.  I guess I'll be watching what I feed him from now on.

Re: What about Grapes and other bad things?

My dogs used to eat the grapes right off the vine ... and if you were eating grapes they would all surround you in a tight circle waiting to do their trick for a grape.... but then i found out there is a chance of poison so i told my husband not to do that anymore - sent him this article i read.. and he said "It says SOME dogs, and its either right away or its a distant problem... let'em have a grape for crying out loud!"

i'm like Gina... there are tons of other options for treats... but my husband thinks its absolutely the coolest thing to see two or three big bulldogs standing on their hind legs to pluck the biggest juiciest grapes off the vine - maybe it depends on the grape too? I noticed my dogs dont even really digest them .. we have the muscadine type grapes with the thick skins and seeds... but if i had to guess i would say that the seeds are probably the culprit for causing toxicity problems... after all, a lot of popular poisons come from seeds (apple seeds, peach seeds etc)  and with the type of grapes we have its easy to remove the seed...  either way i dont like to chance it.

as for raw eggs  ... oops. they all get one egg a day. shell and all.. but they are bantam eggs and arent very large.

It is suspected that there is a new fungus on some grapes.  Nothing has actually been identified.

Wow! These posts with all the links are VERY helpful.  I wonder how our dogs survived over the years!  Now that we have our first tiny, little chi, I am very aware that tiny amounts of things can be harmful to this dog compared to our larger dogs.  Even the doxies we enjoyed for years seem "big" compared to this dog.  He seems very fragile and vulnerable.  Thanks for the advice.

Re: What about Grapes and other bad things?

Certain things are toxic to dogs; possibly in small quantities they may only make them sick (though some substances can kill even in small amounts) but in larger quantities they definitely can kill them. Grapes are one of the foods dogs should never eat. Some people think they're giving their dog a treat, but they're actually not doing something good for them. There are many safe foods one can treat their dog with, so avoiding those that are bad for them is very easy. Below are some links discussing this in detail.
