RE: not bothered about his food...

they can develop bone and joint problems from a diet that high in protein.

Doesnt the calcium level also have to be considered?I thought more so than the protein levels.

I agree, I've heard it is more the calcium level than the protein.

    greencode,
If you do switch to Orijen, make sure you get the puppy formula.  Here is some info from their website on this issue: [linkhttp://www.championpetfoods.com/orijen/faq/#LBPuppy]http://www.championpetfoods.com/orijen/faq/#LBPuppy[/link]  This is a really high quality food, infinitely better than Purina. My only concern with it is their adult formulas are a little high in iodine.

Actually Wild and Natural is an acceptable diet for both adult dogs and puppies. The diet is properly balanced, and meets AAFCO guidelines for all life stages. To the contrary, we actually do recommend Wild and Natural generally for puppies because of the higher protein level in the formula

It has too much protein for large breed puppies; they can develop bone and joint problems from a diet that high in protein.

While this is a common belief, there is no definitive research to prove or discount this information. At this time we feel confident suggesting this formula for dogs of all breeds and all life stages.

There is plenty of proof showing high calcium in foods will cause joint/growth problems in large breed puppies.  The high protein foods are usually the foods that contain alot of calcium due to the high percentage of animal proteins.

Does anybody have any thoughts about this Oscars dog food? We met a boxer owner the other day that had a 9 year old boxer that looked in fantastic condition and he recommended this particular brand to us

no expert but the young dog formula looks pretty good especially considering the limited options in the UK

We're using Purina Pro Plan due to quality of the food and it contains all the stuff a growing energetic puppy needs

How you  came to the conclusion that Purina uses "quality" ingredients just boggles my mind  beyond comprehension.  May I suggest that you go and read the dozen or more links I posted about what's really in foods like Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, etc  in the thread about  The Best Food so you can learn what is really used and the "quality" that it  actually is.

Here's a little tidbit to get  you going :  ( Entire article linked below )

Plump whole chickens, choice cuts of beef, fresh grains, and all the wholesome nutrition your dog or cat will ever need.

These are the images pet food manufacturers promulgate through the media and advertising. This is what the $15 billion per year U.S. pet food industry wants consumers to believe they are buying when they purchase their products.

This report explores the differences between what consumers think they are buying and what they are actually getting. It focuses in very general terms on the most visible name brands — the pet food labels that are mass-distributed to supermarkets and discount stores — but there are many highly respected brands that may be guilty of the same offenses.

What most consumers don’t know is that the pet food industry is an extension of the human food and agriculture industries. Pet food provides a convenient way for slaughterhouse offal, grains considered “unfit for human consumption,” and similar waste products to be turned into profit. This waste includes intestines, udders, heads, hooves, and possibly diseased and cancerous animal parts.

    The Players

The pet food market has been dominated in the last few years by the acquisition of big companies by even bigger companies. With $15 billion a year at stake in the U.S. and rapidly expanding foreign markets, it’s no wonder that some are greedy for a larger piece of the pie.

    • Nestlé’s bought Purina to form Nestlé Purina Petcare Company (Fancy Feast, Alpo, Friskies, Mighty Dog, Dog Chow, Cat Chow, Puppy Chow, Kitten Chow, Beneful, One, ProPlan, DeliCat, HiPro, Kit’n’Kaboodle, Tender Vittles, Purina Veterinary Diets).
    • Del Monte gobbled up Heinz (MeowMix, Gravy Train, Kibbles ’n Bits, Wagwells, 9Lives, Cycle, Skippy, Nature’s Recipe, and pet treats Milk Bone, Pup-Peroni, Snausages, Pounce).
    • MasterFoods owns Mars, Inc., which consumed Royal Canin (Pedigree, Waltham’s, Cesar, Sheba, Temptations, Goodlife Recipe, Sensible Choice, Excel).

And., I hate to be the one that says "total bollocks " about not being able to find any quality pet foods in the UK.Here are quite a few  quality pet food companies in the UK because I've researched them.  Some of them actually offer better foods than even those here in the States so you must not be looking in the right places because they ARE out there.  http://www.burns-pet-nutrition.co.uk/holistic   is one that comes right off the top of  my head ,  http://www.fish4dogs.com    is another,     http://www.landofholisticpets.co.uk/

http://www.naturediet.net    is probably one of the BEST and I'm trying to get it brought here to the US.

Here's a site with NUMEROUS holistic and organic pet foods :     http://www.alotoforganics.co.uk/cats/pets.php

     Here's another good/decent food :  James Wellbeloved :   http://www.petplanet.co.uk/category.asp?dept_id=173

    Yet another one :   http://www.naturaldogfoodcompany.com/

I can go on but it's as easy as doing a GOOGLE search.  There are also many Swedish, German and other quality holistic pet foods available online in the UK and probably in smaller shops. You just need to do some research and check around.

Re: RE: not bothered about his food...

I have no idea why food choices are so limited here, but they are.

I get Ben's Orijen from Zooplus (I had to switch from TWO when they stopped selling it).  Ben loves it....he's happy, healthy, eats it....good weight, shiny coat etc etc etc.  Can't complain about ANYTHING regarding the Orijen....except maybe the price lmao.  But it's worth it.

Re: RE: not bothered about his food...

I've eventually gone for the James Wellbeloved food and the Lamb & Rice option for now. I like the fact that I can get it from a number of suppliers online and in-store. I got it from Pets at Home because I had a £5 voucher but you can get it online here for £35.99 delivered for a 15kg bag. Thanks for everyone's help and advice on the this subject.
