Suddenly peeing in same area inside

I have a 1-year-old dog. She was easily "potty" trained. The process was/is to let her out into the backyard; out the door, down a flight of stairs, onto the grass. That was going well. Several months ago she was spayed. During the recovery time we would let her out through the front door to avoid her having to go down the flight of stairs. There are only 2 steps out the front. Once during this recovery time she had an "accident" and peed inside the house, directly in front of the door. This only happened once while she had the stiches. Since recovering, approximately every third day the dog pees inside, at the front door. We could let her in and out into the backyard numerous times throughout the day...answer her every bark to go out back, but then suddenly she decides to pee inside at the front door. She never ever pees anywhere else within the house. I know just by the way she is acting that the floor there is wet. We've cleaned the area with various odor removers, covered the spot, put treats there thinking she won't want to eat where she messes, but nothing works. Any suggestions regarding how we could remedy this situation would really be appreciated! We have hardwood floors in this area, and although we are particular about cleaning it, I could see the damage beginning. Please help!!!

As I see this, she prefers to go out the front door to pee... Maybe it's easier, maybe she feels special, but after the spaying, she probably felt more "cared for" for a while and she wants that to continue. I think SHE "thinks" that peeing in front of that door will let you know to open that door.

What I suggest is that you start over with potty training as much as you can by crating her, watching her every move or having her leashed to you while you're in the house. Secondly, make peeing in the back yard the most WONDERFUL experience she could hope for! Have it involve a play session with her favorite toy, a special treat, a massage or whatever she finds just peachy. But go out with her and praise her a lot. Make going in the back yard better than the front yard again.

    Good luck!

Re: Suddenly peeing in same area inside

For now, I would block her access to the front entrance so that she is not enticed to pee there (animals will smell their smell and think "oh this is where I pee").  Then I would take a few steps back and re-train her to pee where you want her to pee.  I only want my dog to pee in certain areas of the yard b/c it's a nice yard that we don't own so I sort of re-trained her.  There's one area under a tree where the grass is already dead, so urine burns aren't an issue.  She was 3.5 yrs old when I got her and had been a potty trained house dog for years, but I went back to using a set schedule for potty times and using a leash to go to the "pee spot".  Like 4iC says, use LOTS of praise and rewards.  Even now after several months I still tell Kenya "good potty!" and play a little game once she has peed in the correct spot.  I still use a schedule for pee times b/c I want her to get used to peeing on schedule that factors in when she has to go, when people are home, and when are the optimal times to pee with regard to wake up time, bed time, and leaving for work/dog training/etc.  It REALLY helps now that we are more busy.  I don't have to wait around for her to ask to pee or watch to see where she goes; I take her out, wave her to the pee spot, and she goes.

I agree, block her access. My husky, who has been house trained for 14 years recently started to relieve herself in the basement. At first I thought it was a health thing but after having her checked out the vet said she's fine. I cleaned the basement up with animal odor removers and everything and she still will go down there to go to the bathroom. This is a dog who is very particular about where she goes to the bathroom too. So, I have had to baby gate off the basement (the cat still goes down there) and she no longer goes to the bathroom in the house.

I think that once a dog gets in the habit of going in one spot, they will continue to go there even if the smell is gone. Obviously it's going to be hard to block off your front door but do the best you can and retrain her that its not an option to go there. You also might try to hang a set of jingle bells or something so that she can easily tell you that she needs to go out.

Try cleaning that area with vinegar and water.  My mother swears by it and I've tried it and it seemed to work.  The only problem I would be afraid of, is she may find another spot.  I have that problem with my Maltese.  She does it infront of my diningroom door and downstairs (almost directly below) in front of my laundry room door!  Needless to say, I hate walking around with out socks or shoes on, 'cause the floor (especially in the summer w/ humidity) it actually feels sticky.  When we got Misty, I pulled out the vinegar and water to clean up after her accidents, and then went and did in the other 2 areas that my maltese was using as her (litter box) and haven't noticed anything in any of those spots.  Just yesterday, though, my husband caught my maltese peeing on my runner (that I bought for the little ***, so she will go to the door, since she doesn't like tile floors) and again on my rug (different from in front of the laundry room).  When you cover the spot does she still go there?  What are you covering it with, paper?  Other than that, I'm stumped as well.  I know what you mean by damage, too.  Good Luck, I'll be checking back to see what other suggestions you get.

Handle every situation like a dog.
