Could my Scottie be pregnant?

Now please DONT come telling me of or anything or i will simply leave. I know that this is probably a big mistake and i understand that. So all i want is a simple answer nothing else.

Just wondering now after i talked to my vet.
Could a dog get pregnant without being locked 3 or 4 days into her heat cycle? (Not being locked but being with an active male)
Signs of dog are:
Hard tummy while sitting ONLY.
Nipples kind of firm tho round around them and hang.
Tireness, sleeps more. Still runs and plays.
Getting big around rib cage.
If was to be pregnant she would be not even into her second week.
No discharge.
Went into heat almost 3 weeks ago this Monday.
Vet cant tell this early.
Any serious answers? I am just wondering at this point i know is a 50% 50% chance.
Also dont come to me with the whole GET HER SPAY thing because i know that she cant be spay while in heat and some vets at least mine wont spay her of shes pregnant. So dont waste your time. That wont help me. If she is pregnant i will deal with it. From experience or raising a mother and a litter. Thanks.
PS: Male was a Poodle born on last days of October 2006, he is my friends dog she was over on vacation and headed back to town same day.

I did take some pics today of her belly now and stuff. If you want to see them let me know.

Scottie, welcome to i-dog!  [sm=welcome2.gif]

A female must tie with a male in order to get pregnant.  However, this can happen very quickly.  If your eyes were not on your female every second that she was with the male, a tie could have taken place.

This post gives a short description of the heat cycle:
http://community.dog.com/forums/p/27944/370905.aspx#370905

The length and characteristics of your female's proestrus cycle would determine when she would stand for a male.  It is possible for a female to tie 3 days into proestrus (in other words for estrus to start after 3 days of proestrus).  It is also possible for a female to have a completely "silent" heat (no bleeding at all).

I sure hope the male is a small poodle.  A standard poodle could sire pups that are too big for your little girl.

RE: Could my Scottie be pregnant?

Its WAY too early to determine a pregnancy by physical signs ... she's not even out of her heat cycle yet & what you are noticing may very well be the changes the body goes through while in heat.
Your best bet will be to look for subtle changes in behavior. Keep an eye on her vulva, as the swelling will go down & it will return to its normal size within a month. If the vulva seems to stay the same size as it was during her heat over the next few weeks, there's a good chance she was bred.
If she was bred, she should be out of heat within the next several days and should be ready to be spayed safely in another week or two. I'm not trying to be condescending or mean spirited, but from your pics of her, she is not a good example (conformation wise) of her breed. She has an incorrect coat which is a heavily penalized fault in a terrier - I don't mean for the show ring, but for working/pet purposes as well. She does not have a correct headpiece, either. These are qualities that make a Scottie a Scottie ... I'm sure she's a lovely dog, just not breeding quality. Seriously consider having her spayed, as there is also quite a bit involved in whelping a litter. If you are not prepared for the 1001 things that can go wrong, you run the risk of loosing the bitch and pups.
         Please keep us posted.

If your female turns out to be pregnant and you decide not to abort the litter, I can provide you with links to info on how to whelp.  However, whelping is potentially expensive and dangerous.  If your current credit cards would not cover the expenses for a C-section and for sick pups, I suggest you apply to www.carecredit.com.

If you go to www.peteducation.com and do a search on "pregnancy", you will find a lot of information.

RE: Could my Scottie be pregnant?

She may be pregnant, or having a false pregnancy, although thickening up through the waist is not a typical symptom of a false pregancy. I can usually tell by the second or third week when friend's bitches are expecting - long before the vet can with any certainty. But it's something I have to eyeball in person - there's just a "look" pregnant bitches get. I even informed one friend that her son's coonhound bitch was pregnant, when she thought I was nuts because she supposedly had had no opportunity. Apparently one of her cattle working BCs had slipped over really fast while she was walking him back to the kennel. Result: 9 weeks later, a beautiful Walker Coonhound/BC cross pup. And one friend who had to eat crow.

A female can concieve with no tie. Friend of mine got a very nice small litter of "oops" pups after his male mounted a bitch he was walking on lead, for a split second. The dog was an extremely experienced male, however - I"m not sure whether a pair of virgins would manage the same thing. The above incident had to happen in a split second too - but again in that case the female was quite experienced. The "oops" litter was between two dogs he had intended to breed, but the timing was off - the female was slated to run in the Finals championship just a few weeks after the pups came. She still competed and came in third.[sm=biggrin.gif]

You'll find plenty of vets willing to spay this early in the pregnancy with no problem. That's entirely up to you - if you will take the responsibility to do it, (it would be my choice since this is an unplanned litter from a first-time bitch, presumably companion quality - ie, you don't show or work her).

If you make the decision, you'll be able to make it work. Just call around - vets vary widely in their policies and I've never known more than a couple of vets that weren't willing to do a pregnancy termination spay. It's somewhat tricky but it's better than losing your companion during a fouled up pregnancy.

Good luck.

UPDATE: Well a quick one at that. I have seen pictures of a pregnant Chihuahua 3 weeks into pregnancy. Nena looks exacly like her in the pics. Same nipples, tummy looks bigger than the Chis. Friday she has an app to the vet for rabies shot again. So i will talk to my vet there as well. PICS taken today 9/4/07.
