    Help! Hard Tummy? **UPDATE**

My dog, Pepper has hated a bloated, hard stomache lately. She eases herself down onto the floor when she lays down, and if you touch it, she groans. It's been going on for alittle less than a month, about now. We are calling the vet today, hopefully. My relative said it was just old age, (she is 14) and that she was just getting old, and that was life. But I'm starting to wonder, now. She is eating healthily, and when we come home, she usually is dancing around for afew minutes, but then she settles back down again. She's also seeming to sleep more than usual.
Am I just over-reacting? What could be wrong with her?

Oh, I meant to add. She just had a MAJOR bladder infection about 2 months ago. I'm not sure if it completely ever went away. We missed afew days on her treatment, because of vacation and we forgot. *cringe*  Could it be a relapse?

Has she been going potty ok? Her appetite is a good sign, but I'd get her to the vet. It could be anything from gas to a tumor. Hopefully, it's something simple - keep us updated!

Yep, peeing and pooping fine. No problems with that either. She has actually had two bladder infections in her entire K-9 life. And when she did, she had blood in the urine. And she doesn't have any now. That's why I don't think it's a bladder infection.

Welcome to the forum; You need to take her to the vet ASAP; if this has been going on for a month, she won't get better without treatment. Please let us know what the vet thinks; I hope it's not serious.

    RE: Help! Hard Tummy?

Ok, we're back from the vet. He put her on a drug to enlarge her arteries, for the heart murmur. And he said sometimes, when dogs are older and have heart murmurs, that fluid can go to the lungs and stomache easier, for some reason. And he thinks that could be why Pepper has the extended stomache.
They also drew blood... she has some increased enzymes? in her liver. They are having us come back next month, and maybe every month to moniter that. He said for her age and heart murmur, she is in excellent condition....

And now a HUGE load is lifted off MY back! LOL![:D]

There are nutritional ways to support the liver; with the right care, it can actually improve. Callie and Jenny should be along to give you some tips; both of them have great advice about caring for dogs with liver problems. Good luck and I hope she starts feeling better.

I am a little concerned about how your vet portrayed this to you - animals with heart disease that have fluid in their abdomen have that because they are in HEART FAILURE. It is not a typical occurance - dogs go into right sided heart failure and the fluid builds up in the abdomen, called ascites. Having a distended stomach is a major thing - your vet didn't offer to analyze the fluid, do a cardiac workup, anything? Has Pepper had an echocardiogram? Chest xrays? What medications was she put on?

Well, he did say a chest x-ray would be good, but we just cannot afford it. She is almost 15, and has a 4th degree heart murmur. Her time is coming soon anyway. Don't get me wrong, I love this dog like I love my family. I have known her since I was little, and she means the world to me. But life takes it course, right? He put her on, hmmm, Enalagor, or something like that? He said for humans it's called Vasolex, if that helps?  Yes, he told us she was in Congestive Heart Failure. We are aware. Are you saying she doesn't have much longer?
