Anyone want to take a stab at how many mgs we shold be starting Conrad, an 85 lb dog on? Cressida and her best friends:

  RE: Dosage for glucosamine/chondroitin Reply Contact The adult human dose.  That's close to human weight anyway.   There's no real dose for such things -- often the best thing to do is try the suggested dose on the label and then watch how it's tolerated.  Remember, g/c is only going to work WHILE you give it faithfully -- it's a hydrator for connective tissue -- and if you stop giving it (or if you only give it once a day) it will only work sporadically at best.

  RE: Dosage for glucosamine/chondroitin Reply Contact Wolfgang is about that size and gets Gycoflex III which is 1000 mgs twice a day. It also has the chondroitin etc. If the vet didn't recommend a particular supplement, look for one with manganese which helps with absorption. You may also want to look at horse supplements.   In addition to the glucosamine supplement, you might also want to try the Knox Nutra Joint. We use the orange can w/ green lid. He gets 2/3 scoop of that once a day. The flavor isn't great so I give it with salmon oil or something else juicy and smelly. I think that he showed a lot of improvement since starting this supplement and it's not expensive. We started in May and he hasn't needed an accupressure treatment since, although he's about due. He was going twice a month during the dreary winter months and last summer about once every four to six weeks.

  RE: Dosage for glucosamine/chondroitin Reply Contact Luke gets Joint Health Chewables from Springtime.  Each tablet has 250mg of Glucosamine HCL and 175mg of Chondroitin (amongst other things).  He gets three tablets per day, according to the bottle's recommended amount for dogs 80-120lbs (he is 92lbs).   I wasn't having very good luck getting Luke to eat them on his own, but for some reason when I throw them on his dog food they're the first thing he eats.  [8|] Luke -- Lab/Shepherd (1-1-04) Open Versatility, EAC, EJC, TN-E, TG-E, HP-O Kaiser -- Alaskan Klee Kai (12-30-07) Future Agility Star!

They'll do the Heartgard, but not glucosamine etc. I ended up using a mortar & pestle because one of mine will pick through the food and leave tablets.

  RE: Dosage for glucosamine/chondroitin Reply Contact When we got JJ and found out he had arthritis and bone spurs that were causing considerable discomfort, I put him right away on a very high does (5000 mg) LIQUID glucosamine. We've already picked up a bottle of I think 500 mg pills from Trader Joes (did it last night before this thread) but when that runs out I'll take another look at all our options.   RE: Dosage for glucosamine/chondroitin Reply Contact My dog Tristan does the same thing: I throw them on his food and he scarfs them up. In his case I think it's to get better access to the food. He eats anything so if I gave them to him by themselves he'd probably eat them too. He was the runt of the litter -- I guess he had trouble getting enough food, so now he eats like there's no tomorrow.   But then I have another dog., Sarah, (pictured) who won't take supplements at all. Doesn't matter if I use all the tricks, even opening the capsules & sprinking their contents onto the food, wrapping them in yummy treats, whatever. She'll hold them in her mouth longer than physically possible then spit them out when I'm not looking.   KIDS.
