    Flea Meds Issue

I have given Copper Frontline for fleas ever since we got him (12/05).  Each and every month we go through the same situation.  I put it on him, and for the next 1/2 hr to 1 hr he paces the apartment.  He'll sit/lay for a few seconds and then get up and try and find a new place to lay.  I think the smell bothers him and he is trying to get away from the smell.  The past 3 or so months I will put it on and then give him a raw bone to chew on, but last month that couldn't even distract him.  I got Advantage this month to try.  I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and if so, what have you done to help fix the situation.

    RE: Flea Meds Issue

I guess my question would have to be..does your dog have fleas?  I ask because if my dog didn't have fleas, I would not be using pesticides on him.   I suppose it could be the smell...but more than that, He could be having a reaction to it. While those products might be relatively safe and easy to use...they are not completely safe.  Here is a link to read about flea products.  [linkhttp://www.dogsadversereactions.com/flealist.html]http://www.dogsadversereactions.com/flealist.html[/link]

If we were in just about any other state than Georgia (or the South for that matter) I would totally agree about not using them.  Unfortunately, here in Savannah there is such a high concentration of them due to the sand EVERYwhere.

    RE: Flea Meds Issue

I finally had some time to read the website you gave me.  Copper definately does not act like those dogs.  When he paces around the house it seems like he's trying to get away from the smell.  After the meds soak in he'll stop.  He only does it when I first apply it.

My guess is that the way it feels bothers him. He probably thinks he's laying in something wet and keeps moving to get away from it...

    RE: Flea Meds Issue

We live in Florida and it is the same here - fleas are horrible!! Not to mention red ants - I wish there was a repellent for that!!! We use Frontline Plus as it is supposed repel ticks and mosquitos as well. We have had no problems with it.

Has anyone tried Hartz flea stuff???

    RE: Flea Meds Issue

There is nothing over the counter I would use. IF I were to use flea meds it would be Frontline or Advantage, or Advantix.
There is NOTHING in Hartz Mountain I would use on any pet at any time.

I can't bring myself to buy anything over the counter.  Frontline I use now and Copper can't have Advantix (he's a hearding breed).  I got Advantage this month so I'm gonna see how he reacts to that.....which I need to do really soon.

Frontline Plus kills fleas, but it doesn't "repel" them unfortunately.

Here are a few sites on natural flea & tick repellents. Repellents can be put on a bandana or vest if you don't want the aroma on the dog all the time.

If you want to go the all natural way use diatomaceous earth.
