    callouses

My dog is starting to develop callouses on his front legs, near the joint.  We have mostly hardwood floors, but do have an area rug, a bed in his crate and a bed in his floor for him to lay on.  He seems to prefer the hardwood.  Should we be concerned about the callouses?  They don't seem tender or anything.

    RE: callouses

Is your dog a heavy dog?  I had an Irish Wolfhound and they're really prone to these pressure calluses on their elbows.  I know that if they're left unchecked, they can form an ulcer which can then become infected.  That can be hard to treat.

Try to convince your dog to lay on something padded whenever you can.  I know it's hard, especially in summer, because the floor is so nice and cool!!

    RE: callouses

He's a Sibe.  Per the vet he needs to gain a few pounds, so he is pretty boney.

I'll try to get him to lay on the floor.  We are still working on the down command, so it's a little tough.  I'll just bribe him for now.

    RE: callouses

He probably likes the coolness of the hardwood floors, so try a cooling bed.  The last site (below) seems to be down at the moment, but it has sort of a doggie shaw that fits over the shoulders and down the legs to put padding on the legs where you need it.

    RE: callouses

Thanks for the recommendations of the cooling beds.  I'll have to order one.  Hopefully he'll lay on it and give his elbows some rest.

    RE: callouses

I hope that a cooling bed works for you, but if you need something more for the calluses look at the DogLeggs on (www.dogleggs.com).  They also have a version that goes down to the wrist.
