    Need help with new puppies!!!!!

My mother has two new puppies that are part jack russell and part sheltie! They are pretty good puppies until it's bed time! She had them crate trained so when it's bed time (about 9pm) they go in their crate. They wake her and my little brother up at about 2 or 3 am everysingle night crying! What can she do does anyone have any suggestions?

How old are the puppies? How long has she had them?

Mom needs to set her alarm and take the pups out to potty BEFORE they wake up begging.

Taking pups out to pee at night is a normal part of house training.  This will continue until they are old enough to sleep all night.  There is nothing anyone can do to hurry this up.

    Ditto Glenda!

As the pups get older you can push the alarm back a little each night.  But take it steady and don't try to hurry it.... or you will end up with a messed in crate and house training will take much longer!

She got them at 4 weeks??  That was much, much too young.

The rule of thumb is that a pup can hold it (in hours) for their age in months, plus 1.  Since they are 4 months old, they can hold their pee for approximately 5 hours.  9pm to 2am is 5 hours, so that is about right.

The only thing your mother could do is put the crate in an ex-pen overnight with the crate doors open.  Put newspapers or puppy pads down for the pups to use.  However, this will slow down their house training.

Exercise the puppies, but not to the point of exhaustion. This will drain their energy and help them sleep. And yes, take them outside to eliminate at night. If you're sure that the pups don't have to go, they're fed, they've had exercise but they're still whining, you have two options: ignore it so the puppies learn it is futile, or address it so the puppies learn it is unacceptable. To address it, everytime the puppies start to whine, say "Shh!" or "No!" or "Quiet!" or what not. What will make this difficult for you will be the fact that, if it wakes you out of a sleep, you'll probably be in a bad mood. Corrections don't work unless you have an in-control and positive attitude. Never get angry or frustrated with them.. that will make them view you as weak and make it ten times worse.

Did you really get the pups at one month old?? That's crazy! If the pups were taken away at such a young age, they could have serious developemental problems. In addition, NEVER get two or more pups from the same litter! It can cause physcological damage!

Sorry, don't want to go off topic, but can you elaborate on that??  Why and how; and where did you hear this from?

The only damage that I know of is that the pups might bond too tightly.  That could result in extreme distress (anxious, whining, not eating, not sleeping) if the animals ever have to be separated (e.g. illness, surgery or death).  Any animal that fights being crated at the vet could easily create complications.

Spending plenty of one-on-one time with each pup can largely avoid this issue.  That way each pup develops enough self-confidence that it is not psychologically too dependent on the other.

RE: Need help with new puppies!!!!!

All puppies cry at night. Theres no way possible of getting out of that. Thats one of the joys of puppies! LOL. Anyways, one thing you can do to comfort the puppies more is have your mom put the crate next to her bed (or your little brothers bed) so they know there safe with there "master". Another thing along with that is tell her to put an old t-shirt or something in the crate with them so they have her scent with them. If the crates next to her bed she can dangle her fingers in once and a while and all the pups will focuss on is giving kisses!

    Hope I Helped!
