    More Dry Skin

    Hello All,

Buckel (8 mo old Mini Schnauzer) has had dry skin in the past, which seems to have corrected itself, but last night I noticed that on his belly near his male parts his skin is super dry and flaky.  Is there any lotion or anything I can put on there to help?

mine get some omega 3. it's a fish oil and you can get it at any pet store.
you add it onto the food. they really like it, and it helps against dry skin...

    RE: More Dry Skin

I second the Omega 3s suggestion.  Oliver had dandruff since I adopted him at 3 months.  I've been adding salmon oil to his diet and the dandruff is gone.  Plus there are other health benefits to adding EFA (essential fatty acids) - helps support brain and nervous system function.

Buckel won't eat when I add anything to his food.  Can I rub the oil directly on his skin and have the same effect?

Mine think the fish oil caps are treats. I just give them as treats. Not on the food.

Also, are you bathing him? And if so, is he getting rinsed real well "down there". :)  And I would use a conditioning shampoo and not bathe him more than once ever couple months if at all. :)

I don't bathe my dogs. I just brush them. And thy smell wonderful! They don't smell like lavender, but they smell good and clean!

I'll have to try the treat idea.  He has no problem with allergy pills if I let him sniff it and stick it in some cheese, so maybe he'd do the same for these.

Yes, I do bathe him, about once every two weeks.  If I don't, he stinks.  And he HATES to be brushed.  The only time I can do it is just after a bath when I have him trapped in the sink.  ;-)

So is that a "no" on rubbing the oil directly on?

Wow, cool!  Buckel ate it!  He didn't eat the soft-gel, but I poked a hole in it and squeezed out the liquid and he licked my hand clean!  Sweet!  [:D]  (Of course, probably part of it was that he hadn't had his dinner yet...)

Now, tell me, how much can I give a 20-lb mini schauzer pup?  The capsules I have are 1000 mg per softgel, with 600 mg of omega 3's.

that is the amount my vet recommended for moca, who is the same weight... but honestly i give much less.

    RE: More Dry Skin

You could rub it right on, but he'd probably lick it off!  [:D] I would give him 1-2 caps a day and then down to 3-4 a week when his dry skin clears up. You can tell how much he needs by how his coat and skin respond.

    Fish oil info:
    [linkhttp://chetday.com/omega3fattyacid.htm]http://chetday.com/omega3fattyacid.htm[/link]

[blockquote] [font="verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif"]Safety[/blockquote] [font="verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif"]Fish oil supplementation is very safe. The most common side effect seen in people and pets is a fish odor to the breath or the skin. Because fish oil has a mild "blood-thinning" effect, it should not be combined with powerful blood-thinning medications, such as Coumadin (warfarin) or heparin, except on a veterinarian's advice. Fish oil does not seem to cause bleeding problems when it is taken by itself at commonly recommended dosages. In people, high doses of fish oil (4 grams or more each day) when combined with ginkgo biloba has caused serious bleeding problems. Fish oil does not appear to raise blood sugar levels in people or pets with diabetes despite earlier concerns about this. Flax oil does not appear to cause "blood thinning." In my practice, I've never seen any side effects and I use a lot of fatty acids. Very rarely, I have had a few of my canine patients smell fishy. This side effect goes away as the dosage is lowered. While many owners worry about giving extra "fat" to their pets, especially in cases where the pet is overweight, take comfort. Fatty acid supplements contain only a handful of calories and supplementation is unlikely to hurt any pet on a diet. [blockquote] [font="verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif"]Tip[/blockquote] [font="verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif"]In studies done in people and pets, dosages much higher than label doses are needed to achieve results. As a rule, I try to start with 2-4 times the label dose when treating diseases and adjust the dose depending upon the pet's response. I use the label dose when recommending fatty acids as a coat or skin supplement.

I give mine 1-2 1000mg caps per day during the dry season and slack off during the rest of the year. They weigh 70-85 lbs. I also feed them fish steaks, canned salmon and sardines in oil for a special treat like once a week. I also give Vitamin E caps because I read that it helps with the assimilation of the fish oil. What brand do you feed the dog? My dog used to have terrible itching, flee bite infections, and oozy, bloody patches on her skin (this was before I did my homwork on the inadequecy of commercial brand foods). I switched to a raw, all organic diet and every single problem vanished. Switch to a better brand, if you know what to buy.

I use Nutro Natural Choice puppy formula.  It was recommended by our puppy class trainer.

Since I've been using the fish oil, his skin is getting better.  It's not completely better, but it's getting there!  ;-)

This is a medium quality food that is grain-heavy, but at least that grain is rice.

The ingredient list that I am looking at is a bit old.  Does it still have rice gluten and menadione sodium bisulfite complex?  After the recent dog food contamination problems I would be afraid to feed a food with a grain gluten.

Here is why you don't want menadione:
