    Puppy Games

Just wondering if anyone out there has any ideas for some fun active games to play with my 12-week old puppy.  He has kongs and chew toys which he likes but he's not really into running around or chasing a ball. In fact if I throw a ball he usually watches it go past and then sits and looks at me like I'm crazy. Any tips for enticing him to run around a bit more would be much appreciated

    RE: Puppy Games

i never had a puppy that young, but my jason doen't really go crazy for balls either..
he plays the following game with me:

we both face each other (i'm on my knees).
i try to touch his feet with my hand as often as i can, while he tries to avoid it, by jumping around...
meanwhile HE tries to pass by me (we play in my tiny living room) and i try to cut him off.
    we both have a blast..

your pup might not play the same game. what i am trying to say is, that anything can be fun for them. maybe it would like chasing you around the house (moca likes that) or it prefers to be chased around by you (that's more jason's play style). don't scare him though, when you try to chase him.. just be all fun and hyper and try to make a step towards him, see how he reacts...

    RE: Puppy Games

Prancer was older than your pup when I adopted her but she did the same thing with a ball - just watched me throw it.    I got her interested in it by moving it every which way while I was holding it - once she was following it with her eyes I threw it and then said (all happy and hyper) "OH BOY - I"M GONNA GET IT !!!"  then I'd go get it wait for her to follow and do the same thing.  Now when I throw it I say "WHO"S GONNA GET IT ???" and she takes off after it.
I always thought chasing a ball was instinct - I learned through Prancer that its not.
Have fun with your puppy !
People ask me if I think dogs go to heaven. I respond: Of course they do ! Heaven could only BE heaven if dogs are there

Michelle: 1994 - 2007. English Cocker Spaniel - shelter. RIP sweetheart - I'll see you again someday

    RE: Puppy Games

Start running around and having your dog chase you. Don't reverse rolls though by you chasing the dog - you definitely don't want to teach the dog that it is fun when you chase it. The dog should think that it's fun to chase YOU.

With toys, bounce the toy around on the floor while hanging on to it (you are sitting on the floor) and the dog will chase your hand and the toy.

12 wk old puppies need a lot of sleep so don't worry about getting it to run around too much. That will come once the pup reaches about 5 months of age...

I thought that chasing a ball is something dogs are born loving too but I guess not. Thanks for the ideas and pointers. I'm going to try those out. I suppose considering he is only 12 weeks everything is a game to him as everything is so new. I'll let you know how it goes.

It can be fairly easily taught.
