    puppy links, please

On another forum I frequent, there was a post from a guy who just adopted a dog from some sort of rescue about 2 weeks ago. They were told she was just out of heat and they should wait a few weeks to spay her. They thought she'd been vetted, but apparently, not very thoroughly, because this afternoon she went into labor, and now they have 8 completely unexpected puppies! He posted pictures, and puppies and mom look healthy and happy and like they are doing great. But they totally weren't prepared for this and I don't think they have baby puppy experience.

Does anyone have any good links about baby puppies I could post over there? Thanks!

Socialization of the puppies is very IMPORTANT as the primary socialization window closes at 12 weeks (secondary at 16 weeks).  The puppies should stay with the mother until at least 8 weeks, preferably 10 weeks, to learn doggie socialization.  The primary bite inhibition education is taught by the dam and the littermates between 5-8 weeks.

    RE: puppy links, please

Part of the puppies' socialization should be "car training".  This is a series of desensitization exercises (treat afterwards) designed to prevent car sickness.  The goal of the exercises is to give the pups a series of good experiences in the car. If the pup gets sick every time she gets in the car, then she expects to get sick. That cycle needs to be prevented or broken.

Exercises (repeat each step many times):
    1. get in the car and right back out - doors open
    2. sit in motionless car with motor off for increasing times - doors open
    3. sit in motionless car with motor running for increasing times - doors open
    4. sit in motionless car with motor running for increasing times - doors closed
    5. drive to end of driveway and back
    6. go around the block
    7. gradually increase the trip distance

Here are some recommendations that the puppy owners could give to the new owners:

    The Ultimate Puppy Toolkit

    Dunbar, Ian,
Before & After Getting Your Puppy: The Positive Approach to Raising a Happy, … Dog, 5/2004

Kilcommons, Brian, Childproofing Your Dog: A Complete Guide to Preparing Your Dog…, 4/1994

    http://tinyurl.com/6hkj3

(See the "Dogproofing Your Child" chapter.)

A good site to save for ideas on other problems is:
Can we help you keep your pet?

    http://www.wonderpuppy.net/canwehelp

Sleep promotion ideas for a new pup:

    • Night time - Put the pup's crate close to your bed and on eye level so the pup can see you.
    • When home - Take the pup out to potty when she wakes up in the crate and whines (nighttime, too).  This is part of potty training.
    • SnuggleSafe - a disk you can heat in the microwave to keep the pup warm
    • SnugglePuppy - a stuffed animal that provides heat and a heart beat sound
    • hot water bottle
    • ticking clock
    • Comfort Zone DAP spray or plug-in diffuser - mimics a new mother's pheromones
    • a towel that has the scent of the mother dog and the littermates (keep clean by putting in a mesh bag and hanging from side of crate)
    • a soft radio for company

Note:  All the TinyURL links I have given you are to Amazon.com and I created them.

Of course, you may give him whatever like, but I am a very curious person.  What did you not pass on?

Can you post the picture of the mom and pups?  Pretty, please!

    RE: puppy links, please

Wow, so much great stuff! Thank you very much Janet Rose.

I took out the raw feeding for puppies link, just because I can tell they have their hands full with the basics and I didn't want to sidetrack them into trying to research nutrition right now when they are worried about keeping the pups warm and not squished.

There are a couple of great dog people over there, one who breeds, who have chimed in with some very good and specific advice, so maybe I will supplement later.

I will ask the dog's owner if I can cross-post his pictures here, and if he says it's OK I'll do it. He linked them from what looks like personal web space, so I don't want to go ahead without the OK. I doubt there will be a problem. So hopefully we can all see the baby puppies! Thanks again.
