RE: Is this normal puppy behavior or sign of early aggression?

    ORIGINAL: Xerxes

Some dogs are loud players and they offer play growls which are sometimes quite loud.

I know alot of terriers that are super loud, same with Dobies.  This doesn't mean that they're being aggressive.  If you can take things from your dog with no problem, this is a perfect time to teach "trade" for a better item.  This is a way to prevent resource aggression from EVER occurring.  Do a forum search on "trade" and you'll find some good info on it.

My dog's got a short little stump so tail being tucked between leg is impossible to see [:D].  However, I am learning to observe other signs.  Thanks all [&:]

The 2 corgis that I know are both VERY growly and vocal when they play. They flat out sound vicious! But it's all play. When they do get annoyed with other dogs you can tell. Their growls go from kind of a lower pitched growl/snarl to a much louder intense growl/snarl. They fight it out and walk away from each other. Then go back at it after a time out.

Corgis can be strong minded though so just make sure you're doing NILIF and such. My brothers corgi challenged the family as a pup by growls and bites over resources but they have since worked that out.

Ditto to the growling. My Sheltie growls constantly when we are playing. When I first got her, I was fearful that she was aggressive. Not so. Growling in her case indicates, "It's time to play. Now catch me or throw the ball. Do something!"

My sister's Rotty/Mastiff mix growls when he is happy... little unnerving having a dog that size growl while being pet on the chest or licking you.

The best way to tell is if they are showing their teeth when doing it.  This means they are trying to tell you something. Jake, the above dog, will growl at my puppy whenever he gets close to his bone... he basically growls, shows his teeth and puts the side of his muzzle on Atlas' face to say, "See my BIG teeth? BTFU!"  He never strikes though... just tries to teach him.

My corgi girl is very vocal about everything. Growling at toys, barking when playing, her Roo- Rooing and of course her baby dinosaur growls. Corgis are very sweet dogs, but will try to rule the roost if not taught the rules. A bored corgi can be very destructive.

my pixmix is a very loud guy when we start playing and he gets rialed up, but he is just playing. if the dog flares its teeth or gives you another physical indicator than it might be something more
