    Another Bubblegum problem!

I came here because so many people here know behavior problems in dogs...that someone might be able to tell me what Bubby is doing.  Or why???
She only needs to go out a couple of times a day...and I don't think she is wetting in my house because she has to go... but sometimes when I get home from work she is so excited to see me that she wets.   I have learned that when I come home if she jumps on me to not be too forceful in telling her to get down....because she does pee then. And for a while DH was having her sit on the floor next to him when I walked in because she used to "barnstorm" me when I walked in. Eventually I told him to not make her sit because it seemed she was holding back too much excitement and when she would walk by me she might pee.     But yesterday...I can't believe what she did. I walked in after work...(I was actually gone less time than usual) and she was there to greet me... didn't jump or act horrible excited... I leaned over to put my head by her head (she does often jump up because she likes to put her head on my shoulder) so she didn't feel the need to jump up....and I thought she was sitting while I was "hugging" her and calmly talking to her...but she was peeing.    She was looking at me with a face that seemed to be saying "see mama...I'm being a good girl!"   I don't get it.    Only thing I can think of is when I want her to "go" outside,,,I do tell her "be a good girl." That is something I have always told my dogs and they would almost go "on demand" when I said that.    IS that possible?  Maybe I was hugging her and telling her she was a good girl and I loved her...I don't even know what I was saying.   Again, I don't believe for a second it is because she HAS TO GO...and also, 10 minutes later (after trying to soak up and water down the urine in my carpet) we took her for a walk and she seemed to pee a regular amount of time.
    Anyone have any ideas?

I'm almost thinking UTI or spay incontinence?  My general rule of thumb is to FIRST rule out anything medical when a sudden change in behavior happens.

Unfortunately, that's about all I can offer.  Wish I had more for you.

Some dogs pee out of excitement....is there a way you can make your coming home less exciting, try to ignore the dog completely ....then later show affection?

    RE: Another Bubblegum problem!

    Thanks Glenda and snownose....
Glenda...she had a UTI a few months back when she was going many times and hardly anything coming out. And she is not doing anything that looks abnormal now as far as sickness....she didn't go out to pee from last night about 9 until this morning when we got up about 7,,and was not THAT anxious to get out to go then. I think its a behavior thing quite honestly.
snownose...  I do have to do NILIF with her...she has had several issues in the past.  I went thru a time when I totally ignored her when I came home because she would jump on me so much. But we have gotten away from that...she mostly does not do that now...and I also learned to not excite her by being loud or excited when I walk in.   Yesterday she more or less just walked over to great me and I bent to talk to her quietly so as not to excite her...I thought we were doing great, and she had that "arn't I a good girl" look on her face, so I was shocked to see it was not sitting that she was doing.    I'm almost kind of afraid because by ignoring her I get more action from her. But you might be right.  She had never done THIS before...only had done this when I was loudly talking to her.

I'd just come home and say nothing and do nothing...ignore her completely and maybe even, walk outside with her following, so she can urinate IF she has to.

The walking outside idea is good, except that Dyan doesn't have a fence, and can't have one in her cluster community, so she'd have to leash Bubby before taking her out and leash often = excitment=pee.

    RE: Another Bubblegum problem!

Well,,,Bubblegum has been pretty good, if no one was around I could take her out without a leash... she listens really good to "wait" so that might be a good idea to try. Of course if anyone was around I wouldnt try it even though I think she would still listen to me.   She is awesome about commands if I give them...but becuase she is soooo big and some of these dogs in the neighborhood are so small...I don't take chances.
    Thanks Gina and Glenda!

    Hi Dyan!
I just wanted to add my [sm=2cents.gif], LOL!  If they didn't recheck her urine after she finished her medication this last time have them recheck her.  The reason I say this is that Willow has on more than one occasion had a recurrence but it was much milder and the symptoms weren't as obvious.  So, especially, if she's peeing this amount that's much more than it has been in the past.  The reason she's doing it is behavioral I agree but sometimes with these low grade infections they can't control it once they start going.

    RE: Another Bubblegum problem!

Thanks Lori,,,that could be a good idea...IF I could get a sample. Gee I only got a drop or two when she had the infection,,,,doctor said at the time  that she was ashamed of Bubby for being such a big girl and could only spare that little drop.
So what do you think she is thinking while looking at me so pleasing while she is peeing on my carpet????  [;)]

Yes, do the recheck and see if you can detect if the urine has a stronger stench.  A good indicator that something is not right.  Blizzard has been on antibiotics for 2 months now with on and off UTI going on.

    RE: Another Bubblegum problem!

I'd definitely make sure she doesn't still have something medically wrong but it could just be excitement or the infection temporarily weakened her bladder some.  I've had animals that even after they tested fine they still had a few issues with bladder control after a UTI.

Having a dog that always pees when excited, not due to any medical problems, I found that leaning over above them is the worst possible thing you can do.  When anyone leans over her she either squats low or leans sideways and ends up at least dribbling on the floor but sometimes leaving a large puddle.  I think part of the reason she's been improving as she gets older is that she's over twice as tall and nearly up to my waist so people don't bend over her to pet her now.  You should stay as straight as possible and try to just reach down with your hands and pet her some as you walk in the door.  Nothing exciting just enough for a hello and then move on.  Much easier with big dogs.  With small dogs you might have to squat down(bend your knees not your back) so you can pet them without leaning over them when you first come home.  Don't give too much attention and make it too exciting though.  Just a quick pet and walk on into the house ignoring them.  Discipline for any jumping or excessive behavior but otherwise ignore.  That way they do still get their greeting and aren't so excited about it when it does happen(equals peeing) but you also don't give them a really excited greeting(again equals peeing).  I think in the long run it helps them chill out better about you coming home more than just completely ignoring them.  If you completely ignore them without teaching them  how to greet calmly they'll still be looking for any tiny sign of acknowledgement and go nuts if you slip up and give it to them.

    RE: Another Bubblegum problem!

    Dyan and DPU,

DPU - they might need to do a culture and sensitivity on Blizzards uti.  Hope she is still doing well.......

Dyan,  my first thought too was a uti.  When my boy had an infection, he could hold it all night, but not all day.  I am wondering if the uti is back, and being so excited in seeing you just puts her over the edge in being able to hold it.

I don't understand your statement about not getting enough urine......get a clean catch first thing in the morning.  Use a clean frisbee or a ladle.  Keep in the the fridge - not freezer - until you get dressed and take first thing to the vet. The sooner they look at it the better b/c crystals can start to grow in the urine.  No need at all to take the dog in.   I transfer the urine to a plastic to-go cup to take to the vets.

    RE: Another Bubblegum problem!

I don#%92t have much to offer in the way of suggestions, other than what has already been said.  However,  I think a trip to the vet is a good call. If this is unusual behavior then something medical might be going on.  My last female grey all of a sudden started having accidents in the house and I thought it was behavioral.  She would pee right in front of us.. almost like she was being defiant. We would scold her and take her out to potty and yet the problems continued.

When she started NOT getting up in the middle of the night, and would pee while sound asleep, I KNEW we had a big problem.    She was in the vet multiple times, was put on different meds and nothing worked. We ended up having to put her down about 3 weeks after her problems started as her body went into total shock and started to shut down.  We never were able to identify the cause of her bodies problem, but ever since then I vowed that unusual behavior like that would result in a vet trip right away before we start the scolding, etc.

I hope you get some answers.[:)]

      (((hugs to you and bubby)))

    RE: Another Bubblegum problem!

Thanks for everyones thoughts.   I do have to honestly say that I don't think its a medical problem.  Its not really a behavior change..because any time she has ever had this kind of accident...it has always been when I came home from work... or one time when we came home in the evening... I was trying to calm her down because she was beating her tail into the doorway and I didn't want her to break it open..and she thought I was yelling at her.  But I was with her all day today....and she never asked to go out...but did her normal thing.   This is two days after her accident on Friday.
When I think of it...Sham might be correct.  She loves to put her face by mine....so she tends to jump up on her back legs...so I bent over her to come to her level so that she doesn't jump up. THAT might be too much excitment....HHHmmm,,,I hadn't thought of that.
