    Omg!! I'm getting 2 puppies!!

I am so excited!! I am going to be getting a standard poodle puppy to train in 2 or 3 weeks when it is old enough to be sent home. The director of the Service dog center doesnt know what color or sex the puppies are, just that the breeder is donating 2 the service dog place, so I will be suprised! I had a choice between 3 golden, 2 chocolate labs, and 2 standard poodle puppies, and of course being my dream dog, I chose the poodle! (also because I knew my dad couldnt complain about shedding). I will keep the puppy at our house, train her/him and feed him/her and everything for up to a year and a half or until he/she is ready to be placed with a disabled person. I am so excited! It took 3 days of convincing my daddy to let me get a puppy, he hates them until they are potty trained. He hates walking into the kitchen into a puddle of pee...haha.

But we are also suprising my mommy with her dream dog (thats why it took so much convincing with my dad to lemme get a sevice dog pup), a miniature red wirehair dachshund! He will also be ready in 3 weeks so we will have TWO puppies in the house!!! This has NEVER happened before, and my mom said it never will, we were never allowed 2 puppies at a time...my mom doesnt kno about her pup coming..only bout mine...hehe. Im so excited...not only because I get to own my dream dog (for a year), but because I will get to see my mom happy! There have been some troubles in the family, and a death, and my mom has been really sad these past few months am I'm really looking forward to see her reaction when we suprise her with her lil puppy.

Its been so long, I'm starting to forget the smell of puppy breath! Haha...soon I'll wanna forget what it smells like...haha

I'm so excitedd for the puppiessss!!!![:)]

OMG two puppies at the same time...You're a braver person than i.You and your family have a lot of hard work ahead of you. [sm=eek.gif]

Does the service dog place know that there will be 2 pups in the house? As this is usually highly NOT recommended by reputable breeders etc.

You will have to be very careful to do a lot of work with these puppies separately so that they do not bond too tightly with each other.  The service pup's primary bond must be to people.

RE: Omg!! I'm getting 2 puppies!!

Does the service dog program know about the second puppy? Most I'm familiar with won't allow you to puppyraise unless there are no dogs of near age in the house, because it's SO important for a SD to be people focused, not dog focused.I think you might want to hold off on puppyraising for a year.

    I agree.

I would be very interested to hear what the service dog program thinks of it.

RE: Omg!! I'm getting 2 puppies!!

As someone in the midst of raising two puppies I say [sm=eek.gif]!

Yes, we made the deliberate decision to get two puppies at the same time and, even after all our research on how to handle them, I still have moments when I question our sanity. It is very demanding watching, correcting, redirecting two puppies - not to mention grooming, exercising, training, etc. (And these are just companion dogs. It is so much more important to get it right with a service dog.) I don't think you can be too prepared or re-think the decision too much.

RE: Omg!! I'm getting 2 puppies!!

I agree with everyone else.  I think you should decide on just one for now.  Raising 2 is sooooo very hard.  I've got 2 foster puppies right now, only because I had no choice.  If the rescue had room in a puppy-less home for one I'd have given one up.  The only option was to turn one into a shelter and I refuse to ever do that.

I'll tell you now, every bad habit one has the other is going to pick up.  Your work won't double, it will quadruple.  Seriously, please think very long and hard about this.  Raising two at a time can be done, but it's harder than you could imagine.

RE: Omg!! I'm getting 2 puppies!!

    Thanks for all the replies.

I thought about this before I agreed to get the service dog puppy. My mom in the past has risen 2 puppies in our house (2 dobies) and she took the time to work with each seperatly and they were great dogs, and great companions. I will take the time to seperatley train my puppy and my mom will be training her puppy. My mom will bring the puppies to work with her to work on potty training and they will each be in their own crate and be let out for play time. We will spend time with each indevidually and also let them play together. Its not like we are going to lock them in a room together so they only bond together, someone will be with them all day, and we will take them places to socialize, like my little brothers football games, the puppies will meet new people, new dogs, and will expierence new noises and smells. They will both also be going to puppy class so they get to socialize with other puppies and not just eachother and the 3 other dogs at home. I have researched this and I am up for the challenge. Thanks for all your concerns. [:D]

I'm sorry, researching is absolutely NOT the same thing as doing. I think you need to tell the service dog program and let them decide

RE: Omg!! I'm getting 2 puppies!!

My dad decided that he is not ready to get the red weiner dog since my mom doesnt like the color of it...so its one puppy for now. [:)] We will be getting a dachshund puppy from the next litter the breeder has but that will be a while...so I'm glad my dad decided to hold off on the other pup...I was thinking really hard and how big of a challenge it would be and how horrible it would be if the 2 bonded so I'm glad he backed out. I didnt think it was the greatest idea but my dad didnt understand the whole thing about 2 puppies...but I talked to him bout it and I think he is started to understand it now.

When it comes to raising a service dog he doesn't have to understand if it's against their rules. Did you check to see if they allow it?
