    Haven't been here in awhile

I've been a lil under the weather & there's been more issues with Gracie ( our Basset puppy that had Giardia )

I've actually came here seeking guidance, hoping some of you can please help. After all her treatments for the Giardia, lil Gracie still had runny bloody poopy. I called the vet the beg of July & said WHY?? They sent her poppy to a lab, the results were HOOKWORMS!!

Just a quick refresher...Gracie came to us with Giardia, Kennel Cough, Ear Mites & an eye infection. So, we ger Pancur & treat her ( her last dose was today ) On Tues she went in for her routine puppy shots. I advised the vet there seems to be blindness in her left eye. The vet did 45 mins worth of nerve & eye testing....the result...poor Gracie is paralised on the left side of her face & blind in her left eye :*(

She also has a bad yeast infection in both ears ( I do realize Bassets are prone to ear issues ) She goes back on Tues for a recheck & to talk about testing to determine the source of paralysis.

For all that breed on here....the guidance I need is this...

WHERE does the breeders responsibility end? The vet bills are constantly mounting & seem never ending. We love her & have NO intention of giving her back. In my opinion though, the breeder could've prevented the Hookworm & Kennel cough by taking better care of his dogs.

If I'm wrong, please tell me, I'm ready with papers from vet ( actual dxs & notes ) & the mounting stack of receipts from vet bills. I feel there is a responsibility aspect on his end. Please tell me where I should go from here???

      TIA :)

I know some states have puppy lemon laws, but you're going to have to google and see if you have that law where you live. Other than that I don't know what other recourse you have short of returning the dog.

    Sorry.

Thanks Paula, but, giving her back simply isn't an option...2 reasons...

    1. We're hopelessly in LOVEEE with her :)

    2. The breeder would most likely kill her

Even if he himself would keep her & care for her, it's irrelevant...we'd NEVER have spent already close to $1800 on her if we didn't love her ;)

I'm so sorry you are having to go through this. I've had a similar situation.  My whole ordeal gave me a bad taste in my mouth when it comes to breeders in general.  Not to say that all breeders are cruddy and are only in it for the money.  I just wonder what kind of regulation is in place to ensure that breeders are actually being humane to their animals?  The lady from which Reesee originated has several ads running in the Charlotte area classifieds at all times.  The pictures of these different small and toy breed dogs show puppies stuck in crates; faces void of any real joy or contentment.  This means she must have a huge amount of animals coming from her home that were treated as Reesee was.  And it disgusts me.

RE: Haven't been here in awhile

The funny thing is, his dogs kennels are immaculate, even on surprise visits. He really seems to love & care for them, which is 1 reason I'm unsure of what to do.

He didn't do anything on purpose & he did say he feels bad wayy back the week we got her & I told him. Truthfully, I believe him. I just am upset too in the fact that he refused to call Gracie's siblings parents & inform them of the issues. If Gracie had them, they had to too. He said he didn't want to bring trouble *sigh*

Everyday I think of her siblings & I pray for them. If Gracie was in a backyard pen, I wouldn't know HALF of what was wrong to bring it to the vet's attention!!

RE: Haven't been here in awhile

It's entirely possible that he does love and care about the dogs, but he doesn't seem to have a clue what he's doing and he doesn't seem to be spending the money for proper care.

When we were breeding, heck, even fostering, our pups were wormed, they were vet checked, complete with health certificates, and their vaccines were current.

This will sound harsh, but does he feel badly enough to pay all the bills, dip into HIS profits, which are likely considerable, and maybe STOP BREEDING until all his breeding stock has passed the proper genetic testing?

What sort of health guarentee does he offer?  Any breeder worth his/her salt offers a darned comprehensive one.  Yes, you are right.  Many of her problems could have been avoided with proper vet care from the get go.  This guy sounds to me like a back yard breeder who probably loves his dogs, but also loves the money they put in his pocket and isn't willing to part with any of it to take care of the pups properly.

I'd not feel badly about demanding some reimbursement.  You, after all, are the one having to care for this poor baby.

I would call and talk to the breeder. If he's a good breeder
then he will  offer to pay for half the vet bills so call and talk to him

I am going to talk to him, & you're right, he doesn't have a clue :( In all honesty, I DON"T see lil Gracie's issues coming to an end anytime soon :( But, we love her immensely, & no matter, she has a mommy & Daddy that cherish & adore her!!

This is the lil lady in question

RE: Haven't been here in awhile

HALF??  When we were breeding we paid in FULL for any congenital or genetic issues....or rather we were willing to, and it was in my contract that we would.  Because we were darned careful, we didn't have any of those problems but I considered those pups MY responsibility until or unless the new home did something stupid that caused them injury or illness.  That is what a good breeder will do.

And, the little lady is adorable!

See Glenda, I'm with you!!! I think when I 1st came here & said I wanted 2 more shepherds, male & female to breed, it was you who said PLEASE RECONSIDER!! I know others said so as well, but, you stood out for me :)

A responsible breeder is for life! That was paramount in my decision to NOT breed. If I can't consciously be there for the life of the pups I sell, financially & physically, I, or noone belong breeding pups. The abandoned, homeless animal epidemic is out of control as it is, I surely won't be a part of adding to it!!

Thank you for saying she's adorable :) Gracie is an absolute joy, & we can't imagine life without her.

    cherylynn71:
They sent her poppy to a lab, the results were HOOKWORMS!!

Gracie can re-infect herself with hookworms from her own poop (pick up any remaining stool) or from areas where she has eliminated.  I would worm her once a month until after you have a hard freeze.  The heartworm med Interceptor or Heartgard Plus will also help to keep Gracie free of hookworms, but I would alternate your heartworm med and Safe-Guard every two weeks for a while.

You can do this de-worming inexpensively by getting liquid Safe-Guard(link) and a dosage syringe.  Safe-Guard (OTC) has the same active ingredient as Panacur and will keep for three years in the frig.  It is effective against Giardia as well as intestinal worms.  See the dosage instruction in the bottom section of this site:
    www.beaglesunlimited.com/beaglehealth_canineintestinalworms.htm
NOTE:  Don't worry about the fact that this size bottle is marketed for goats.

RE: Haven't been here in awhile

cheryl, I'm so sorry about what's happening with gracie.  She's a doll!

Giardia, as you know, can be super hard to get rid of.  It can also be very hard for the vets to find in a stool sample as well.    Just keep up with those treatments.

As far as the breeder responsibility, coming from my own family's experience, we had two dogs that had problems, an Akita with sebaceous adenitis diagnosed at 2 yrs and a Peke with a detached retina diagnosed at 5 months.  Both breeders offered to take back the dogs and the peke breeder offered some financial help with the canine opthamologist.  Both also offered other information on those particular conditions.

So IMO the breeder should be offering something to help you with this financial burden.

Thank you :) Janet Glenda & Xerses....I will indeed take your advice Janet...it's been a nightmare, poor Gracie!

I am also going to talk to the breeder & I will abreast you all of how that goes. DH said he's going to try & take off work Tues for her recheck...maybe from there we'll go straight to the breeder!

Thank you all so much again :)
