    Copper got bit! UPDATE

I feel so bad for him!  DH took him out to use the bathroom and met a neighbor's dog (they were outside & he was tied up on a long lead).  Unfortunately, I wasn't there so I don't know all the details, but long story short DH thought it was a harmless occurrance and they came inside.  About an hour later I heard him licking and I looked down and there's a hole in his side the size of a 1/2 dollar!!!!  We rushed him to the emergency vet (which is maybe a 1.5 blocks away) and they ended up giving him stitches and 4(!) drainage tubes.  [:(][:(][:(]  Unfortunately he has to have the tubs in for 3-5 days and the stitches will come out 7-10.

While he was in surgery we came home and talked to the owner.  She felt sooooo bad.  We got her dog's shot info and she said she's willing to pay for the bill.  She was so nice.  She said this is the first time that her dog even acted aggressive towards another dog.  The dog that bit Copper (his name is Dozer) knew he was in trouble as he kept sulking and not making any eye contact.

My concerns are the drainage tubes.  What am I to be watchful of?  He's been laying on that side (probably feels no pain right now) and when he stands up there's blood on the carpet.  We clean it up right away, but are we to expect this the whole time?  We've been trying to get him to lay on his other side but I'm afraid that he's going to lay on the bad side while we're sleeping.  Any advise as to what to expect for the next week??

ETA:  He also has to wear the ecollar 24/7.  Any suggestions as to how to feed him with the collar on?

    RE: Copper got bit!

its a shame the vet didnt clue you in on all of that themselves. i am not criticising you at all by the way.... just vets in general. my mom's dog died after the vet assurred us she would live - she had gotten into a fight and died the next day from shock, not the wounds.... despite all attempts to help her out..... hind sight says they should have kept her over night for observation but they didnt.

So... saying all of that - keep an eye out for shock
keep an out for anything green and yellowish oozing from the tube. the tubes are so it can drain and i THINK prevent infections.
puncture wounds are very very tricky and become easily infected. i wouldnt worry about him lying on it yet. just let him make himself comfy, but if you see signs of weirdness then call the vet ASAP.
i also think it might be best to maybe crate him, or confine him somehow for a couple of days. again, it will reduce the risk of infection.
my only experience with tubes is with horses. my sister rescued an abused, starved, and beat up horse. it escaped its own pen and wandered into a pasture with two aggressive horses that attacked her. the vet stitched her up and installed drainage tubes.... it wasNASTY too.... you actually had to press down on the area surrounding them to squeeze out the puss....
i'm not sure if you'll have to do that. i would seriously call and ask the vet about that to be sure of what to do incase that happens though.

The drainage from the drain tubes will likely be bloody for the next 24 hours.  Slowly the drainage should turn into a reddish serum, & then to a yellow to clear serum.  I would keep Copper in a location that won't ruin your carpet as you want the wound to drain, so that a pocket won't form.  If pocketing occurs, then you will likely be forced to deal with an abscess.

Is the e-vet having you flush the drain tubes?  If not, you may want to call & find out if flushing is needed.

Copper will quickly adjust to eating & drinking with the e-collar.  You can hold the food/water bowl up for him, but he will quickly learn to manuver with the e-collar on.

Poor Copper!!  I hope he heals quickly.

There are several more comfortable alternatives to the standard Elizabethan-style collar:

The e-vet did give us flush solution to clean around the tubes.  They said to clean it 2-3 times a day.  Unfortunately, DH is forced to be the only one doing the flushing as I'm having a hard time not passing out just looking at the tubes.

I just put his food bowl and water dish on small boxes in which the collar shouldn't effect him from eating/drinking.

I don't think I'm going to crate him as he hates his crate on a normal day let alone on a day when he's got an e-collar on.  Yes, I agree that it might be safer but DH is going to be home with him all day so the only time we really have to worry about the tubes is when we're sleeping.  Unfortunately, our apartment is wall to wall carpeting except in the kitchen where we taught Copper he wasn't allowed to go.  So now whenever we do say it is ok for him to go into the kitchen he either won't or is extremely leary of the idea.  I think we might be SOL re: the carpet (good thing we have a steam cleaner).

Janet, thanks for the links.  I totally forgot about the no bit collar.  I'll look around town to see if anyone carries them tomorrow.

    RE: Copper got bit!

Make sure that your dh is aware that when he flushes the drain tubes, there will be "extra" stuff that may come out.  Usually around 2 days after the tubes are placed, some necrotic (dead) tissue will collect around the edges of the drains.  When he flushes the drain the tissue will flap around a bit.  It's nothing to worry about, but it is a bit unnerving when you aren't expecting it.

As gross as the drain tubes seem, trust me when I say that they are much easier to deal with than a nasty draining abscess.  Five days is nothing compared to the weeks of dealing with a ruptured abcess.

Give Copper an ear rub from me!

    RE: Copper got bit!

what worked for us when Kaydee was ... basically incontinent.. after she hurt her back - she couldnt get up and move around easily, so when she had to "go"... she just.. "went" where ever she happened to be lying.. mostly it was because the vet gave us meds to keep her relaxed. so in order to keep the mess in one area we kept a plastic table cloth under her at all times.
it was easy to hose it off, spray some bleach or lysol on it, dry it, then put it back.
since you are only dealing with some drainage then it will probably be easier for you to use the plastic table cloth. you wont be cleaning up poop or pee like we were... and a dog as big as Kaydee.. there was a LOT of it...

anyway, just an idea. but its mandatory to keep it over the top clean as long as he has stitches or any kind of opening in his skin.

    RE: Copper got bit!

The table cloth is a good idea and I can find some at the $1 store!  [:)]  I don't know how happy he will be about laying on plastic, but we'll see how it works.  OH!  Do you think a towel instead of plastic would be okay as long as it was bleached/washed on a daily basis?

Poor Copper!! I hope he heals quickly.  The table cloths would be a cheap and a great idea.  If you want to do towels try finding the large beach towels at Wal-Mart or the dollar store.  Make sure to buy extras that way you#%92ll have one handy while the other is in the wash.

I am glad he wasn't injured any worse---and he could have been.  I know this is scarey for you and how worried you are.  Just sending good thoughts your way for a speedy and complete recovery for your Copper.

    RE: Copper got bit!

Thanks for all the support!  Poor guy looks so sad right now!!  I'll definately have to go to the $1 store today whether its for table cloths or towels.

Here's a picture of him now.  Sorry about the size, but I don't have time to adjust it.

    RE: Copper got bit!

Maybe an old bedsheet with the plastic underneath it? That way your carpet wouldn't stain but it would be more comfortable.

Also, when Pirate had an ecollar he liked to be handfed. He liked soft stuff like chicken and rice better than normal food. I think the pain meds he had made his tummy upset.

Poor Copper [:(] Get better soon!

    RE: Copper got bit!

yeah i didnt think about him not liking to lay on plastic lol it was winter when Kaydee was hurt, so first we started out with towels, then a sheet, then the table cloth AND a towel or sheet... but by the time she had finishing doing her thing all over them my husband and i kinda looked at each other like "I;M not washing that and using it again!" so we ended up throwing them out.... i know a little bleach would have killed any germs and cleaned them right up, but.... there was a mental block there lol we just threw them out. but that got expensive - still havent replaced those towels yet, and one big blanket - it ended up being easier for everyone to not use towels because, well, she didnt like them. if we put one under her, or around her for warmth she would drag herself out from under it [8|]
maybe you could try both for him and see which works? but again i say you dont have half the mess we did lol so it will probably work better for you guys [:D]
