    Post-Surgery Question

My dog was just spayed on Friday. My husband and I have been home with her since. She hasn't had to be crated or left alone. We are having some concerns about going back to work tomorrow and leaving her alone in her crate. We don't want her to lick her incision or bother the stitches. She really hasn't since we've been home, but we are not sure about when we will be gone. We did purchase some bitter cherry and have put that around the incision. What are your suggestions? Unfortunately the "cone" is out as we don't own one and it's too late to purchase one. I just need some past experience to help be reassured!

    RE: Post-Surgery Question

You can create a makeshift, but effective collar by

    (1)  folding a towel to the width of the dog's neck
    (2)  wrapping the towel around the dog's neck
    (3)  wrapping duct tape around the towel

The idea is to keep her from bending her neck, so you will have to pick a towel of an appropriate size and thickness.

    RE: Post-Surgery Question

I've also seen people (and this depends on the size of the dog) use an old wife-beater undershirt on the dog. You just put it on like a normal shirt would go on and then tie the back of it around the dog's middle so it covers up the stitches. Certainly (most) dogs cannot undo the knot and it keeps them from being able to chew the stitches.

    RE: Post-Surgery Question

lol,  a wife-beater refers to the white sleeveless shirts some guys wear as an undershirt, or just as a shirt.  They tend to be made of light, cheap white fabric and sometimes ribbed.
