    Spazzy:

If im going to provide the dog with shelter, water, exercise, and affection... why in the world should they get to keep him?? I dont mind taking care of him at all, but WHY should they get to keep and dog that they obviously dont care about while someone else takes care of the dogs needs while they do nothing?

I think the idea is basically that, they aren't going to give up the dog willingly.  If they insist on keeping the dog, and you feel like it, at least making his life better by providing some of the basics the owners can't be bothered with would help him be more comfortable. It's not ideal, but it's better than being freezing, starving, dehydrated, and neglected.

If the dog, through your town's legal definition of abandonment or whatever becomes adoptable and you adopt, you are then owner of record. That is, if you are able to adopt the dog from the shelter, the dog is legally yours, not theirs.

Well the idea is to get them to figure out they need to take care of their dog, or have him taken away. But of course if they did somehow get to keep him.. and still wernt taking care of him, and they pound wouldnt do anything about it, then obviously i would do everything i could for him. I dont mind taking care of him at all, but i just think if the people want the dog they should be able to take care of it themselves.

I dont mind at all doing it for the dog, but im sick of doing things for those people.

Then do it for the dog, he has no choice in the matter.  I too am sickened daily by man's cruelty to animals but I just try and do my little bit to help in the hope that maybe I have lessened one animal's suffering if only a little. Sorry if you felt I was putting you on the spot as that was not my intention.  I was trying to offer an idea but it seems you have tried everything.

Re: Some people should NOT have dogs...

Heres a little update on whats going on with he dog...

Im on winter vacation,  so ive been at the house most of the time. And every day so far,hes been outside for most of the day. I went over a couple days ago, to take the dogs for a walk. He was tied up outside still, on the choke chain, just sitting there shivering. When i was talking to the guy i found out that hes been outside so much, because he broke the crate. So, i guess that means... whenever he was inside, he was in the crate??? The guy said whenever hes inside all he does is destroy and chew up stuff. Im going to my work tomarrow to talk to my boss, who works with the pound. We are going to offer to them (again) to take the dog if they cant handle him.. and if they say no then ill tell my moss and she can have the guy come to their house. Hes gotten loose a couple times lately, but the times i tried to get him, one of the owners could come outside and see him before i could get him. Now that hes not such a puppy anymore.. when he gets loose he doesnt come back, at least not to them. And whenever hes loose he comes straight over to my house. This weekend im hoping they will leave him tied out and leave the house. He usually gets loose when they leave him out when its dark. If they leave him out and he doesnt get loose, i'll just "help" him and make it look like he chewed the rope or slipped his collar (even though its a choke chain.. hes slipped it before, i think its to big for him)

Good, I'm hoping you can get him to a place where maybe he can have shelter and get adopted by someone who really wants a dog. Good luck and thanks for updating.  Keep us posted.

Re: Some people should NOT have dogs...

Keep a diary.  Document EVERYTHING.  If you do end up taking this dog, they will get another dog to abuse and you will start over again.  All their dogs will end up dead or at your house - not a nice prospect is it?  So,the more you can do to push the authorities to enforce the law, the better.  Perhaps, after the Powers That Be have bugged them about the dog getting loose or having no water for the 1000th time, they will think "sheesh, haviong a dog is too much HASSLE.   Let's not have any more!"

Edit: I can't believe they tether the dog on a choker.  Idiots.  Could you manage to get a flat buckle collar as a present for him, before he strangles himself?!?!

I LOVE Ron's idea about taking the real dog and leaving a stuffed dog tethered to the tree. It certainly would send a message - however they are probably too dense to get it. Maybe a note tied to the stuffed dog would clarify it.

Even sadder, they'll probably just go out and get another dog to tie to the tree!!!! UGH!!

I'm sure they would take the money and turn over the dog. And then get another one. Some people are just silly and there's no way to change them.

Re: Some people should NOT have dogs...

If they ever give him up, or he gets taken away or brought to the pound and they dont claim him, then he will have a home here. The second they give him up or he is available at the pound ill take him.

I went to take him and Bailey to the park the other day, and when i went over there to get him he was choking himself on the collar. Their are little yappy dogs behind a fence nextdoor to them, and the dogs bark through the fence constantly. I guess he twisted the rope around too much because the collar was twisted so tight i couldnt pull it off his head, even though it is normaly way to big for him. Next time i go to the store ill get a regular collar for him...

So now im just kind of waiting for them to tie him outside, and leave the house. Then i can help him escape.. The rope he is tied too is all frayed apart and chewed on, it wouldnt take much to make it look like he chewed through it. The pound never comes out right away for a call. When the pound came when the had the little black puppy and the mangey terrier, they didnt come out for a couple days. And it was just luck that they came when both dogs were outside.

I was also thinking... that i shouldnt bring him to my towns shelter. Where i live, its like right near the boarder between 2 towns. If you continue driving up my street for like 1 mile, you're in a different town. Close enough that if he got loose, its very possible he could be found in the other town. I dont think they would look in the other shelter.. That probably sounds bad but i really dont want these people to get the dog back...

For the dog's sake I can't help but hope you are successful.
