    REHOME: South Ga. Great dane

Hey, I've been asked to post this by a friend.  They are keeping a nine month old great dane for an older lady who can no longer keep her.  From what I have heard this dane is harlequin colored and has a great personality.  She is house trained and good with this person's six and four year old kids.  The dog needs a lot of attention and would probably do best with a person who is home all the time or a canine companion.  The dog is very friendly.

Hm, any way of convincing my dad that this dog would be good for me so I can use it as a therapy dog to take to nursing homes and places like that?  That would be fun.  I need some good arguments.  Maggie is too unfriendly, but I have been wanting to do animal therapy for a long time.  It would also help to get me out of the house and doing something, as I can be somewhat of a recluse when not in school.  How do you think Maggie would respond?  Do you think the other dog would pick up her bad people habits, or do you think having a larger companion could calm her down some?  Sis says she will walk her and so would I, which would help slim me down because I need to walk to do so.  We also have a good sized backyard.

Re: REHOME: South Ga. Great dane

I think there might be a possibility of your dog getting hurt by a rambunctious young great dane, they often don't know their size or their strength.  My vet owns a young one and Indie is only slightly smaller than her and at the dog park, she beat the crap out of him!  She just didn't realize how big and strong she was.  I think it would take alot of training and supervision to have them work out together.

OTOH, if you're looking for a dog to do therapy work with, I'd recommend going with a small dog again but find one with a great personality that's about 1-2 yrs old so you can see the personality that's already developed.  I think it would be easier to do therapy work with a small dog that can sit on someone's lap and be petted and whose size wouldn't be intimidating or scary for the dog.  Especially in nursing homes where the residents can be very fragile.

I've been looking into therapy work for Indie and alot of the sites I've looked at have lots of pics of small therapy dogs in people's laps, so that might be a better way to go.

As for the Dane, I'd google Great Dane rescue and try to get her in with them.  They're familiar with the breed and can either take her in or help get her placed.

    Good luck!

Yeah, right after I posted I thought about it for a little longer and decided it wouldn't be a good idea.  Great danes are so big that she wouldn't be happy in my house with all my small animals.  I was thinking about having a therapy rabbit as one of mine is great with being held, doesn't bite, and doesn't seem to mind anything.  However, because I was in school she really needed to have a friend and her bond mate was a rescue that doesn't really like people.

The rabbit is a great idea!  There was a rabbit rescue at Petco this past weekend and the rep was telling me that some of their rehomed rabbits do therapy work and the residents they visit absolutely love them!
