Lil Miss Willa B *update pg3

Hi everyone. If you have any spare vibes or prayers we'd really appreciate is. We're back in the hospial. Sad Willa had a check-up on Tuesday. We ended up being whisked away to the ER where she was poked and prodded and poked some more (including a spinal tap Crying ). She lost too much weight, over 10% of her birth weight. She was down to 5 lbs. (5 lbs 10 oz at birth). Also, her temperature was really low. Part of that was because it was 20 degrees outside and we just came in from the parking lot. But because she's so small and doesn't have a lot of body fat, she can't regulate her temperature very well. The weaker she got, the less she wanted to feed. The less she fed, the weaker she got. I don't think she was cold at home, and she was still having wet and poopy diapers, so I really didn't know anything was wrong.

So they heated her up to a normal temp and admitted us to a room. All the tests have come back good so far, so no infection or illness is causing the problems. Since Tuesday we've been keeping her warm and feeding as much as I can. (Oh my poor nipples). She's been hooked up to all sorts of monitors and an IV (cables everywhere - makes it a pain to feed and change her). She's up to 5 lbs 5 oz now, and her temperature has been good. But since she's been hooked up, they've noticed that she has random spurts of sleep apnea (stops breathing for up to 15 seconds).

The doctor will be stopping back later today to let us know what he thinks we should do. I'm hoping they just send us home with a monitor, and that we don't have to stay a long time or get transfered out to a larger hospital.

Well I have to get going. I'm in the library at the hospital and I've got to get back up to the room. Hopefully I'll be able to check back in soon.

    Thanks

    Janice and Baby Willa

C'mon Willa! You don't want to be in that hospital do you? Pack on some lbs...er..ounces so you can go home and play with mom! -Nolan

We'll be sending "heavy" thoughts your way Jan. Is she nursing well when she will nurse? I don't know how you are nursing her but you might try only nursing off of one side each feeding so she can get the most hindmilk as possible..and rotating them or even pumping the other side to keep your milk supply up.

Oh gosh Janice, I'm glad you posted so I'd know.  C'mon Willa -- there will be a time in your mature life when you'd wish you could eat all you wanted and not gain, but NOW is not the time sweetie!!

Lil Miss Kee has been under the weather (with an old lady sore neck/sore back/sore most everyting) - HOWEVER, if I told her there was a BAY-beeeeeee who needed her, she'd do the Kee Shu Bounce on those yittle bitty front feet of hers and try to bounce all the way TO you (cold and all!!) cos there is nuffin on this planet that she likes better'n BAY-beeeees!! (who knew -- a peke who loves babies??  she's awesome with them and the littler the better as far as she's concerned!!)

I've got Willa and you on one of my infamous stickies on my printer!  Good thots and prayers coming up!

    Re: Lil Miss Willa B

Oh hon! Of course you've got prayers and good vibes. Little, winter babies do have a harder time maintaining body temp, and low birth weight babies do sometimes have a bit of apnea. As scary as this is for you, please know that the docs are used to these sort of issues and know exactly what to do. Hugs to all of you!

Good thots and prayers from Florida - it should be in the 80's this weekend so will send up a 'heat wave' just for Willa!

Hope your both home soon and that everything is great!

    Re: Lil Miss Willa B

I think Willa just has had enough already of this too long winter and I'm with her on that!  She wanted warming lamps if she couldn't be on a sun warmed beach!

In all seriousness - many warm and healthful thoughts and vibes coming her way.  Hoping you are able to bring her home with a monitor soon.  Sending you and DH and Rupert comforting vibes, too, so you can stay calm and steady for Willa.

Kitty boy Iggy, forever in our hearts...
