  Fitting a collar Reply Contact I'm buying a martingale collar on payday and I want to make sure I fit it correctly. Does it sit just below the ears when loose? The last one I bought was too big, I know that cuz Maze slipped it and ate it.. Since then I've been leery about buying another one. But hearing all the good things about it, I'm willing to try again.  Rest In Peace Crombie.   Re: Fitting a collar Reply Contact  It should be tight enough that when it's pulled all the way up, the two rings JUST meet. That way, the dog cannot slip it, but it won't choke them.   It should really only be worn with a leash. (Note to self: Take off when not training so she doesn't eat it)  Rest In Peace Crombie.   Re: Fitting a collar Reply Contact Right. And the way they loosen up, especially on a small dog, is what makes them so edible, LOL. Emma's was... expensive. She doesn't chew collars and never has, but I won't leave it on her. It'd be too easy for her to grab if she got bored, and too easy for it to catch on things. One of these days, I'll get a couple of good pictures of it on her. The collar part in 11" and the chain adds another 4" in length, so it's pretty loose when she's on a loose leash.   Re: Fitting a collar Reply Contact It slides down, when it's loose. You want it to touch right below the ears, because that is the point where it would slip off if it were a flat collar. If the rings are touching when it's all the way up (at the smallest part of the neck, JUST below the ears), the collar will not slip off.    Emma's collar slides all the way to touching her shoulders, when she's walking in it. If she were to pull back, and it got near her head, it wouldn't pop off. A regular collar would.   Re: Fitting a collar Reply Contact Acutally, when the rings touch when the collar is pulled up - the dog could potentially slip. We fit ours to be pulled tight right at the base of the ears - but where you can still fit two fingers between the two rings. It's not too tight when worn loose, but the dog cannot back out of it still. This is how Casey's is fit (when he wears his martingale) and he's never once slipped it...and he is the master of slipping collars.

My fav collar is not adjustable.   Do you fit yours with the loop flat, or the loop pulled? I fit mine a little more snug than you do Emma's fits snug under the ears, with the loop pulled. The "O" rings that hold the chain touch, but barely.
