Howloween is right around the corner!!

So as I'm seeing in petstores and online Howl-O-Ween is coming up! Is anyone entering their dogs into any costume contests or got any awesome costume ideas for them? This is probably my favorite time of the year and I love dressing my dogs up (and myself). Usually Petco and Petsmart has something fun going on for the dogs.

We are going to both.  My boy loves the free treat bags. I am trying to decide what dog /combo to take because all three are just too much.  I'm still undecided on a costume.  Freddy has been a Ninja for two years and it's time for something new.

I am so excited for Hallowe'en!!  It's pretty sad that a couple with no humun kids, furkids only, decorates their house more than anyone else in the neighborhood.  We have dry ice and everything.  We also love to dress up, including the dogs.  The problem is that they are so big that the XL costumes that you find anywhere are too small!

Anyone know where you can find really large costumes?  At least the XXL size, 24 inches and up.  I've been looking online for a week already (it's a mild obsession, I admit)

    Thanks!

Pet store costume offerings never include giant breed dogs, so if you aren't handy or craftsy kind of person, you are pretty well out of the dress up fun, but I don't think that either my GSD or my IW would thank me for the indignity.   They do however like to go about in the neighborhood and meet and greet and sniff the kids, case the goodie bags, and generally socialize.  Costumes seem to be OK with them, but they aren't keen on the masks-especially on adults.  You can just see the posture become wary and the gait stiffen up a bit, they feel somewhat threatened, and the rubber masks which cover the head almost completely bother them the most.  Something just like the eye area covered doesn't seem to trigger any response.  I often wondered if it is the smell of the latex, or the muffled way that people talk through the masks (making it sound like growling)  And yet some dogs I know will wear masks, hats-the whole shot....

My fiance and I love halloween!! The dressing up, going to pumpkin patches, haunted houses, and the best is dressing the dog's up and taking them to places for contests!!! I can't even start looking for Teddi's costume because he keeps growing. I am hoping to make one for him, or have someone make one because I want it to be original

Anyways, Vanmorrison, have you checked ebay?? Or I'm sure if you did just a standard google search for XXL dog costumes you would come across some websites :)

Re: Howloween is right around the corner!!

For all you folks out there with young puppies, this is the perfect time for socializing your puppies with strangers, children, and to acclimate them to the sound of a doorbell.  We've all had at least one dog that went ballistic at the sound of doorbells & know how obnoxious it is for all concerned.  I have used Halloween to teach my last two dogs (mini rat terriers) to not bark at the doorbell, and IT WORKS!  First I made a 2½' leash so I could always keep them close to me.  I allowed Button, my first RT  to go out the door and greet/lick all comers on the hand, adults and children alike.  Ratties are the most incredible kissy lickers!  Big Smile   I just announced to everyone "She's friendly" and they were all eager to meet & greet her.  The children, even those 3-4 years of age, loved Button.  One parent said their child was usually afraid of dogs, but she was clearly grinning and petting my little Button!  They thanked me profusely for the positive dog experience for their little girl.  Button even got to where she would wag her nubbie little tail, eagerly awaiting the next bunch of trick-or-treaters to make it up our long sidewalk to the front door.  She has never barked at anybody ringing our doorbell or approaching our front door & is now nearly 4.  Two years later, with the acquisition of Zipper, our little rescue RT, this technique once again proved to be beneficial.  Neither barks at visitors or the doorbell, EVER.   It's really cute, but since I can only handle one dog greeting trick-or-treaters at a time (candy bowl in my other hand), hubby holds one dog inside while the other gets their turn to do the greeting.  They can hardly be contained until it's "their turn".  Wink

So you folks with really young pups, rig up a short leash and try it this year!  You'll be sooo glad you did.  It provides two-way enjoyment for all.  The kids love it; the dogs love it!  If you put costumes on your dog, that's even better!   Let it not be said you can't teach a dog at a very young age not to go ballistic every time the doorbell rings!

Three years later, I still keep that 2½' lead hanging by the front door and hook up Button so she can go out & lick the mailman's hand when he hand carries up packages to the door. She LOVES to greet people.  Zipper, by nature is less exhuberant with greetings, but is eager to meet people and to be petted.

I got CoCo last year the day right before Halloween....so I had her sit in front of the door steps with me, dressed in her little denim jacket and greet children and hand out candy.

It IS a great way to socialize the little puppers!  We also walked around together and said "Hi" to people.... she was so little and small that I didnt even need a leash because she wouldnt be away more than 2" from me on her own free will....

Ahh...those were the days.....now she's all grown up Crying

This year, she will be on a leash because she loves strangers so much now that she will run after them and she doesnt have a 100% recall.

And I already got her two costumes... a hot dog or minnie mouse... i cant decide which one she will be.... lol

How cute is she and her denim dungarees are just too much!  Ratties have italian greyhound in their ancestry and even at a very young age, they're fast as greased lightning and most of them cannot be trusted off leash or they're gone in a heartbeat.  If they see a bird, squirrel or a cat they're "outta here".  Few ratties will recall when "on a hunt".  Big Smile Plus we're on a moderately busy residential intersection that is a shortcut to the interstate from the main part of our small town.  I feel safer with leash attached to my girls.

I am dressing up my dogs as a mariachi and as Carmen Miranda. I just have to make the costumes.

Im fairly certain DH would never forgive me if I dress up the dogs.  I just made them some kool collars to wear.  We will sit out on the bench in front of the house.  Maggie will love all the kids but would drive us nuts barking at the doorbell.

My husband and I absolutely LOVE Halloween.  Here in Michigan a lot of the campgrounds have Halloween week-ends so we camp at Sleeper State Park in Caseville for a Halloween week-end.  Last year was Bella's first Howloween with us so I made a ghost costume for her (Bella Boo!).  But I saw this really cool costume on a web site called costume express and I think I am going to get that for her this year.  The costume is a glow in the dark doggie skeleton and it does come in a large size.  She was pretty tolerant of the ghost costume, walked in the parade all dressed up like it was just like any other walk so I think she will wear it.  Can't wait for Howloween!!

    LOL!

Monroe was a skele-dog for a couple of years before he outgrew the costume.  It has a bit that went over his tail and everything, it was so adorable.  I can't wait to see pictures!

Maybe we should have a photo collection (not a contest though).
