  dog eating pork and having problems with pancreas Reply Contact I live in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, during the winter months. For that reason I am questionable about vet service. My dog (8yo teacup poodle male neutered) ate some pork and is now very sick. I pick him up and he cries with pain. This happened once before and we took him to the vet and he took blood test and said it was an infected pancreas. Can pork infect the pancreas? What can I do for him now?

Pancreatitis is a very serious, often lethal condition.  Does he normally eat only dog food and feasted on pork? Is he used to table food at all? If he's crying out in pain, give him the vet's medicine, or leave him there for them to do it. That's very, very serious. He probably needs to be fasted, as well.   RE: dog eating pork and having problems with pancreas Reply Contact It's not the meat, it's the fat.  And pork tends to be a fatty meat, and how it was cooked can be problematic as well (if it's fried that's MORE fat)   A dog with a history of pancreatitis MUST MUST MUST always be on quite a special, low-fat diet.  There are certain foods for every pancreas dog that will trigger another episode.  I had a dog who had pancreatitis when she was young and for her it was nuts.  She *loved* them but every time she'd swipe a nutmeat to eat she would get sick because it was undigestible to her.   Your vet should be able to provide you with enzyme to put in the dog's food to help 'pre-digest' it.    The dog needs to see a vet -- I understand you may have to travel to do that, but you'll need the right medicine.  Pancreatitis is extreme inflammation of the pancreas -- you have to get that inflammation down.   For what it's worth, my dog with pancreatitis lived to be nearly 21 -- and she had the initial bout with it when she was THREE.  So they can have long lives if you take care of them.

  RE: dog eating pork and having problems with pancreas Reply Contact It may have been the fat that someone had cut away, as the meat is very lean now a days (farmers have been raising very lean hogs for human health reasons). I would imagine it was the fat. Your little one needs to get to a vet, the pancreas may be very swollen and painful. The pork did not infect the pancreas.  Although I can understand why you thought that. The swelling of the pancreas has caused its ducts to close. Those ducts would normally secrete digestive enzymes into the digestive tract to break down food. However when the pancreas swells up those ducts close off and  get ' backed up' and nothing goes out. So the digestive enzymes stay in the pancreas. Then they begin to digest the pancreas itself - instead of food. This reaction can happen with anything from chicken skin to pork fat to a eating a bottle of fish oil. It happens in dogs who are predisposed, many dogs live on high fats diets (mostly working dogs) but some dogs just cannot deal with excess fat in the diet and yours may be one of them.
