    Unique girls' names (janobonano)

DH and I are still in disagreement about naming the new bean. He is still adamant it's going to be Tuesday, and just keeps suggesting middle names to go with it. The latest was Ariel Ick!. I wrote down "mermaid" next to it. My favorites are Elsa Delaney (DH says old ladyish) and Kaia Azalea (DH wrote down a racial slur next to it Confused, even though Kaia was a name he came up with when I was pregnant with Willa.

We want a unique name, but nothing that is too out there (I think Tuesday is too different), or nothing that would be hard to pronounce. Everyone here usually has good ideas for dog names, so I figured why not give it a try for a human baby? Big Smile

Our last name starts with B, so keep that in mind for initials. When I was pregnant with Willa I wrote down "Simon Oliver" on the boy list, then scratched it after I was able to control my laughing upon realizing the initials. Also no -eta names (Gretta, Etta, etc.) since that would rhyme with our last name.

    Fire away!

    Emma Delaney?

I agree, GLENDA is bad enough.  I still wouldn't be speaking to my folks if they'd named me after a day of the week.  Shoot, why not just November Tuesday??  Gracious.  As the owner of an oddball name, I vote for something saner!  Not that I get a vote.......

I really like the name Emma.  Or Lisa, Elaine, Emily, Gwen, Alisa........

    Good luck with this one!

There are SO MANY Jaylin's, Jayden's, Haley's, Mckenzie's, and Maddison's....I hate those names now Devil, lol, and the parents think those are "unique"- maybe they were but not any more! I like the name Ava alot, but that's the most unique name I would name a kid- I'm boring, lol!

Ki'ala is still my fave.  Pronounced Key-Alla.  but sort of clipped.  You could always leave the apostrophe out.

Kelci got switched to Keltz or Keltzi by Kali and I've kind of kept it.  I like the sound of it.

I have a hard time thinking of names that don't start with a K though...its sort of hardwired.Stick out tongue

    Re: Unique girls' names (janobonano)

my 2 cents -- I was named a really "old timey" name -- but it honestly doesn't matter.  What DOES matter is that we're naming a whole generation of kids who are never gonna have their names spelled right no matter what.

As a young person, my name devastated me.   It wasn't "bad" -- is was just *enough* different that no one remembered it, no one said it right (they STILL don't) and that all combined to make ME feel unmemorable, and "difficult".

When I went out on my own I chose MY OWN nickname.  Some of you know but I only go by "Callie" online -- I answer to it in real life (don't I Megan??) but I absolutely hate, loathe and despise my "real" name because it is ...  un-memorable.  The only ones who ever spell it right are the IRS.

Go back to your roots -- it doesn't matter WHAT, but look at a list of names in an original language?   Pick it by what it means?   (and if it were me I'd be waiting thru the pregnancy to see if she developes a personality)

Just name her for HER.  Not just to be 'different'.  Not what YOU like but maybe what you'd like her to be.  A character quality.  Something precious.

Kids are cruel -- someone is gonna tease her about her name.  Good thinking on the initials.  When he was 30 and initialing documents he would simply have wanted to shoot you!!

MY name was the source of an intense family argument.  That's MY legacy.  (and I hate it anyway)

I so wish that they had named me XYZ because it meant "precious" or "longed for" or "sunshine".

I hear kids get SO defensive about spelling their name -- it's obvious it's always a bone of contention for them.

I'm not anti any names.  I just remember the trauma SO deeply.

How did he come up with a racial slur for Kaia Azalea? I am trying to come up with possibilities but nothing. It's like a riddle LOL!

    Re: Unique girls' names (janobonano)

I really like Isla (as in that adorably beautiful actress, Isla Fisher).  The "s" is silent, so it's like "eye-lah".  I think it's such a pretty name.  Would go nicely with Willa, too. Big Smile  Isla is close to Elsa without sounding old lady-ish, and Isla Delaney would be pretty.

I have/had a step-sister named Tuesday, and nobody calls her that.  They call her Sis.  Funny, her dad named her Tuesday, too.  I wonder what it is that men like about that name...

There are soooo many K-named kids running around right now.  That and Madison/Madelyn/McKenzie variations.  Thank goodness it won't be another boy named Jack/Jackson, either.  Argh.  Ava is starting to get over-played, too.

Edit to add: Just saw Jenn's list, and I've always liked Taryn - went to HS with a girl named Taryn who was smart, pretty, popular, oh, and rich. lol

I went to school with a Taryn, too! She was from Ireland. And I went to school with a Nora, and she was very, very nice and pretty and popular.

    Re: Unique girls' names (janobonano)

One of my granddaughter's is named Alana...I think it is so pretty and rolls off the tongue very smoothly.  Of course, it gets shortened to Allie now, which is pretty, but more popular.  In her case, her parents chose to shorten it, as she is not quite 3.

I've always liked Kaitlyn, too, but I imagine that one is too common also.

Two things my Mom told me in naming a child, consider the initials, and think about whether the name will be suitable for an adult (think elderly, also).

    Re: Unique girls' names (janobonano)

Taryn was one that had to grow on me.  My sister named one of her twins Taryn Rebekah and the other Cicily Anne.  I was very against Taryn however it suits her perfectly now and I can't see her with any other name.

I also like Ava and Anna is one I've always liked.  DH and I are thinking Alwynne (pronounced All-win) if we have a girl.

I'm in the same boat as Callie.  GeorgAnne was a very difficult name to grow up with.  Don't do that to your child. LOL

GeorgAnne, Lady (beagle mix? - 15 Years), Max (GSD/cattledog - 10 years), Benny (pom - 4 years) - CGC, and Finn (lab mix) 8 months - CGC
    Buster - greyhound mix - 9/1994-2/7/09

If I was to have another girl I'd name her Jordyn or Sydney. Recently fell in love with the name Sydney. I like using names that your not gonna hear very often but I would never give a kid a name that they would be made fun of.

I was in love with the name Samantha since I was 10 so I already knew what my first daughter would be named.

JJ says the same thing about picking a name that'll be suitable for an adult!

Everyone's mentioning about considering the initials... I went to school with a guy and he had 3 brothers.  All 4 boys initials were D.A.M.  Always thought that was rather amusing.  =)
