    Incontinance for Puppy - thoughts?

First - I don't think I've ever officially introduced myself and my pup.  My name is Ashley and I have an Australian Cattle Dog named Rusty. He just turned 7 months old in October.

Last night Rusty went outside to pee like he normally does when we get home. His routine is go out to pee, come in to eat dinner, go out to poop, then he's set for an hour or so before I bring him back out. Last night was normal routine.  Around 9:00 PM I let him out again, he peed normally, but when we came back inside I noticed that when he layed down, he had a small amount of urine like dripping out of him.  He licked at himself and then went to playing with his toys. When he got up from laying down, there was a small wet spot on the carpet where some urine had dripped out. He moved onto another spot and the same thing happened. We went to bed, and Rusty gets crated at night. This morning there was no leaking urine and he was still acting normal.

Has anyone ever experienced this? I have an appointment for him tomorrow afternoon at the vet's office but thought I would see if anyone else has experienced this with their dogs.  Coudl this be a sign of a bladder infection or UTI?

Absolutely - it probably IS a UTI or infection of some sort.

Since you are a 'new' dogmom -- always watch how much they drink.   Sometimes when a dog is crated people "take up the water" early in the evening.  BAD IDEA.  Because a dog needs to drink ALL they can drink usually --   it's one of the ways nature "rinses out" the urinary tract.  It may avoid an accident, but many dogs will drink when they have a UTI (because it dilutes that urine that burns so badly -- and yeah, a lot of dogs are smart enough to do this).  That dog's urine may be super dilute -- so letting the vet know  "he's been drinking A LOT" can be really helpful -- rather than them thinking it's a kidney *problem* just knowing that the dog is drinking a ton *recently* is helpful.

Then they may have trouble holding it.  So they might leak if they get excited or too relaxed.

However, at the same time -- some dogs AVOID drinking (because it burns to pee) ... and  that inflammation of the urinary tract  makes you feel like you have to go constantly anyway.  So they try a zillion times to 'go' (and can result in a bruising of the kidneys and then blood in the urine).  But usually this pup's urine will be super strong and stinky.

Has he been going to get a drink straight after he comes in?

They can also wind up with an infection in the sheath (that can make it painful too).

    Is he neutered yet?

Don't let him "go" IF POSSIBLE before you take him (maybe just pick him up and carry the squirmy pup to the car?) -- either that or try to collect a sample yourself.

Oh I'm not a new dog mommy - we've had dogs before.  But this guy is only 7 months so new to us!

He does not drink a lot, nor does he drink too little. His drinking habits have not changed even since or before last night.  He has access to his water right up until bedtime - we do not remove it prior to sleep time/crate time.  He is crated from 9 or 10 PM until 5 AM and from 7 AM to 4:30 PM while we are at work. Outside of that time, he ALWAYS has access to fresh water.  He drinks after we let him out in the evening when we get home from work, then he drinks if he's been running around or playing - which is pretty normal. He doesnt' seem to drink randomly or often.  So I guess in like a million words I just typed - all seems normal in the water drinking department! (I talk a lot too - and I type like I talk Zip it!!)

Last night when this happened, he was not excited at all. He was just laying down chewing on a toy.  He went out, peed, came in and layed down, chewed a little on his toy, and when he got up there was a wet spot under him. THis happened in three spots. He also was licking it more than usual. Before last night, we have not noticed it before and I pay close attention so I believe I would have noticed if it has been happening before.

He was neutered at 4 months so its been a while since.

He did not appear to have the leaking problem this morning though... in any event, I have an appointment for him tomorrow afternoon to see the doggy doctor Dog

My husband just called to say that our dog was having the exact same problem. My girl is about 9 yrs old though and never had anything like this before, so I'm curious what we find out at the vet appt tomorrow. Hopefully it's nothing serious for either of us.

GOOD -- I'd much rather follow someone's train of thot than wonder what the heck they're thinking!!

    Rusty's Momma:
and when he got up there was a wet spot under him.

Dumb question but could the wet have been from his licking?  (sorry -- tmi but did you sniff the spot??)

Honestly if you can be prepared for him to "donate" THERE it's better.  If the vet suspects something bacterial he may want a sterile urine draw (either from the bladder or a catheter -- the aspirate may be more likely if he wants to rule out bacteria from the prepuce).

TRUE STORY:  Last time I took Billy up for a blood draw I told him before we got out of the car "Now you can NOT pee yet -- You gotta DONATE for Dr. Bailey!!  So HOLD IT til you get inside and then one of the girls will take you out ok??"

Yes, I did TO say that LOL

After the exam, Dr. B said "Yeah, I *would* like a sample." so one of the girls came in and I said to her -- "Now, when you get outside **BE READY** and just say to him 'Time to DONATE Billy' and he'll go straight off for you."

She came in nearly in tears she was giggling so hard.  Yep -- he DONATED (almost to the point of spillage LOL).  She got the biggest kick out of the fact that he knew he had to go there and then IN that pan.

See -- you've got nothing on me.  I'm a way-over-the-top dog Mom myself !!! LOL  Glad to get to know you a bit better!!

It was definitely from urine.  He only licked while he was laying on his side, then he started chewing on his toy and the spot was exactly where it should have been coming from had it been urine Smile

The vet said its possible that he just had urine "saved" in his bladder and sheath and it could have been leaking out from his sheath while he layed down. Personally I don't think this is it because it was more than his little sheath could hold, plus he went out numerous times that evening and then it was still dripping out while he was just laying relaxed - not excited or anything which can sometimes cause some dogs to leak a little.

The vet didnt' even want to get a sample and said that he doubts its a UTI or bladder infection because he's "generally too young" at his age.  Personally, I am quite annoyed that the vet didn't even take a sample.  I am going to keep an eye on him and see what happens over the next few days. If I see that it happens again, or see other changes that woudl signify an issue bigger than the vet's suggestion, I'm going to bring him to another vet.

I would be *extremely* annoyed.  This all just doesn't ring "right" somehow.  It sounds to me like he was reaching for an explanation, but honestly I've seen BABY puppies with a UTI (who literally got one from Mommy in the whelping box).  But MANY times I've seen dogs have problems being housetrained **BECAUSE** of a UTI, so (altho that's obviously not the case here) that shoots his theory all to pieces.  *sigh*

I'm sorry you got the run-around.  Good luck with your second opinion.

Altho -- I'm one of those who always thinks stuff like this is a blessing in disguise.  I'd MUCH rather find out a vet is a putz during something non-life-threatening and relatively easy than to wind up with a dog who is critically ill and a vet who is an idiot.  I'd rather find out the idiot part on something easy.  Know what I mean???
